Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

Why the hate for gammon? It’s delicious if cooked properly

I love it so much when it’s warm and the fat explodes in your mouth. Shame it’s so unhealthy.

I don't understand the gammon hate at all. Nor the cooked chicken hate. Nor the hot dog hate. I like all these things and all the sides OP suggested. I'd leave my burger for someone else to have, I expect, but that sounds like a good thing with all the people hating other perfectly normal food items on here.

The outrage about hot dogs and gammon is comical. It’s as if they’re both strange niche foods, not amongst the most bought food products in the country.

Oh, probably should have asked what time you’re hosting? If it’s a lunchtime thing you’ve likely got plenty. I based my previous answer on an evening get together.

We kicked off DPs birthday party a couple of weeks ago with a BBQ at 5:30pm so everyone was straight in with a burger and hotdog each with the sides. After a couple of hours drinking cider the guys were quite happy to demolish any left overs so the extra burgers came in handy!

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 11/08/2026 20:23

Jesus who knew that people could be so passionate and aggressive towards a stranger’s bbq 😳 op I suggest you abandon this thread and enjoy your bbq, you’ve had some good suggestions and have clearly tweaked your original plan and your revised list sounds lovely and perfect. For what it’s worth my partner thinks the people on this thread are insane, just asked him what he would expect if he went round to a mate’s bbq and he said “just burgers and hotdogs, it’s more about the catch up than the food”

edited to add: roast chicken drumsticks are my absolute favourite thing to eat at a bbq! 😋

Sorry, but there is absolutely no way on earth that people are going to eat two burgers and two hot dogs each, plus the sides. It would be a total waste.

I would also have more than one chicken but I wouldn’t have a burger and probably wouldn’t have a sausage. I thought it would all balance out.

My husband would happily have about 3 burgers and 4 sausages, as well as the rest you’ve mentioned 😂 but maybe that’s just my husband and his friends!

BreezyLurker · 11/08/2026 20:31

I think it’s more than enough- I’ve done countless parties, bbqs & dinner parties & I don’t know if people are just eating less or I’ve always eaten way too much but I’m overrun with food at the end because I always over egg things & do some of the things people on this thread are suggesting. I used to do a few sittings of firing up the bbq & making more food after a few drinks but people don’t seem to want It these days. Sometimes I still have a few skinless & boneless thighs marinated to shove on later if anyone wants them but I never go into it! Dont over think it - sounds good x

I honestly don’t believe that BBQ’d hot dog sausages are even in the top 500 consumed foods in our country, but I’d be really interested to see the evidence to the contrary!

So it is the placing of the hot dogs onto the barbecue that is the issue? Get a grip.

No, they’re rank in general.

I could smell someone was putting frankfurters on a bbq the other night so obviously people do it I think it’s just not particularly sophisticated hosting. When I got to bbqs people usually make the effort to get good quality meat in from the butchers or similar - frankfurters feels like a bbq for children not a group of adults

It’s a piss up, not fine dining. When would you do hot dogs on the barbecue other than when you are hosting a barbecue?

I’ve got a group of mates who’d want hotdogs and burgers and another who’d prefer a butterflied leg of lamb. Good hosting is giving people what they’d like to eat, surely?

Those pictures are not the tinned or jarred "hot dogs" that we get in the UK. They look like proper "wurst" sausages or American "weiners". They also look minging, and I don't know anyone in the UK who would eat them, when we have proper sausages available and fridges to store them in.

OP, I think you're on to a winner. You clearly don't want to spend effort or money hosting, and you're making sure that you'll never have to again, as future invitations are going to declined after this shitshow! Nothing says 'You're not welcome' more than cheap, shit food and a host who can't be bothered.

Edited

Of course you can get get proper frankfurters and bratwurst in the UK. I buy them and they are neither tinned or jarred, they are delicious barbequed and not a strange choice at all.
I don't understand all the passion and hate for OPs BBQ ideas.
And the idea that people will joke about the lack of food and go to Macdonald's on the way home is ridiculous. It might explain why we have an obesity crisis though!.

The burgers, buns, sauces, and alcohol are all processed too, as are sausages. It’s just one day.

I definitely think I need sides and salads - I’ve got disposable plates and cutlery though.

I wasn’t criticising the processed sausages and burgers, I was just saying that you probably don’t need salads as they don’t really go with the fast food type mains and people might not eat them if you’re worried about food waste. Like you say, it’s only one night, they could probably live without a bit of lettuce and tomato. However I am a bit judgy about the throw away plates and cutlery though!!

For me the salads and the signs are the best things at a BBQ. I could easily live without the meat!

Well yes, I love interesting salads and meats on a bbq, but we aren’t her friends! Her friends are into burgers and frankfurters. Give the people what they want!

With no dishwasher I’m not going to be washing the dishes.

Agree - as long as they are home made proper ones. I can’t abide pots of bbq side salads from the shops (why are they so vinegary?) or bowls of ice berg lettuce

A children’s birthday party?

Do you never eat hot dogs? Not even at the cinema or at IKEA?

Your life must be very empty to be spending so much time dedicated to criticising a hot dog at a barbecue you’re not going to.

The salads will be homemade. I hate the pre-made supermarket ones too!

I don’t think it is enough. And I would find going to a BBQ and having cold gammon and chicken quite weird.
