But everyone here saying “I would definitely do x/y” is saying it while sitting in front of a keyboard, in a rational state without a half dead partner bleeding out in front of them.
They’re saying it while thinking rationally. When faced with someone who has attempted suicide rationale goes out the window, because you have to think in the moment, and the reality is that when you’re faced with the situation, that moment looks a lot different to how it does in front of your keyboard.
How many of us have said “I would definitely” about something, and then that something happens, and you say I always thought I would, but then”. Most of us I’d like to bet.
The sad fact is that millions of people kill themselves. most don’t kill their children. Suicide is irrational, and in fact most people who kill themselves do so in a situation where it is a loved one, the children themselves even sometimes, who finds them. And still they don’t kill them.
All the people saying they would definitely check on the children. The truth is that you’re unlikely to be in a state to calmly go and check on them, prevent them from wanting to come back to you and to see their half dead mother on the lawn, and so most people would in fact want to protect their children from seeing that. Most people not assuming that the children were dead as well.
