If you are on a hosepipe ban, are you complying?

Just curious really - if you are, will you continue to, whatever, even if it decimates everything? Is your garden small or big?

For transparency, I am ( grumpily) complying, but don't know what state the garden will be in before long, which makes me very sad. My garden is mid sized I would say.

No I’ve 3 dogs shitting and pissing on a patio it needs to be cleaned daily so need to use the hose

gingercat02 · 09/08/2026 16:33

We don't have a hosepipe ban (thanks to Kielder) but I hardly ever water expect for my veg beds. Never water grass and only use collected water for my non edible plants.
Fortunately we haven't had the extreme heat up here (NE England) and it is currently raining.

I think we live in an individualistic society now, no community spirit, so the breakdown in cohesion won’t take long ☹️

I think it’s more than that, though. It’s complete destruction of the infrastructure, such as medication, food and water shortages and so on. When even now people are saying they don’t give a shit about hosepipe bans, it’s not going to get easier. Particularly when you add in the active disinformation of some political and commercial interests. When people are stressed and tired they are more likely to resort to violence.

I'm going to have to fill the watering can from the hose as my tap is rather inaccessible and I can't hold the can to fill it and turn the tap on and off. I did contact the water board to to get on the priority list thing because of arthritis and general other age related difficulties but the haven't contacted me back.

Bonnielassi, I was just talking to someone The other day about 1976 saying I wonder how the twice a day showering Mumsneters would cope with the water and actually being turned off to houses, and having to queue in the street and for water. I was actually pregnant I can also remember the 1957 draught

What shower? i have a fucking bath because thats all the HA will provide I moaned about not having a shower before and got a lot of responses about entitled social housing tenants so thems the breaks I do re use the same bath water except for refreshing it when i wash ,my hair Why should i walk around like a sweaty scruffbag. The celebs certainly arent going to. Look at the excuses we got during Covid Celebs having haircuts "because its work" Some police officers even got caught doing it.
Im child free by choice (which is why i have to live where i do) i havent been abroad since 1986 (oh wow thats forty years) i dont drive

Its what ppl saw our "betters" get away with during Covid that has changed the game. Thats why you wont see 1976 type community again. Its what Libby Purves talks about in that article. Yes its the DM but even a stopped clock is right twice a day!

In my area its also illegal to fill up your can using a hosepipe!

I don't see why, if you turn the tap off as soon as the watering can is full then you are surely only using the same amount of water. We are in Essex and there is a hosepipe ban here.

I have a short length of hosepipe tubing (just a couple of feet of it) attached to my outdoor tap which enables me to place my watering can in a spot where I can more easily stand it upright without it toppling over. It allows me to actually get water into the thing. Apparently that counts as using a hosepipe during a ban, but I think that is being overly pedantic. I turn the tap off immediately once the watering can is full, I don't leave it running and overflowing. I'll continue to do that.

I water my pots with the watering can. I haven't watered the lawn at all and haven't used the proper hosepipe and sprinkler. My lawn is hardly a lawn anymore, more of a parched patch of straw with weeds starting to grow through it, which I have decapitated today using the lawnmower.

So I guess I am complying.

MrsMitford3 · 09/08/2026 16:54

We are Priority water users and exempt but are still using watering cans to water the pots in the garden.
I think it is ridiculous as am using no less water than when I used the hosepipe with hand attachment thingy.
If bloody Thames water hadn't sold off their reservoirs, had bothered to develop new reservoirs and invested in the aging pipework instead of paying their shareholders we might not be in this mess.
We had a burst main the other day and it was like a geyser.
It was reported at 6am and no one came for hours.

I am incredibly law abiding and a rule follower but I can see why people are angry...

I have a garden but think we need to prioritise drinking water over plants.

I’m buying another two water butts (we already have five!) to help next year.

I think the anger is already being exhibited where I live (driving,shop-lifting,general rudeness and lack of care towards each other).

Don't feel guilty using the bath !! Enjoy !
Hotels ,golf courses ,loads of places are using hoses....just enjoy the bath. No one will judge or blame you.

Defying the hosepipe ban is middle class, shoplifting isn't.

Iloveeverycat · 09/08/2026 17:54

Doesn't take a lot more effort to use a watering can

It bloody does. I'm exhausted thinking about it but will have to do it if I don't want to lose my tomatoes and other nice stuff.

Friendlygingercat · 09/08/2026 18:13

I am technically exempt for mobility reasons. I dont water the lawn as it will revive when it rains. My plants are mostly in tubs and I do use a hose on them but wait til its gone dark. They are in a non overlooked courtyard so no one is in a position to see how I am watering them.

JenniferBooth · 09/08/2026 18:16

I watered DMs back garden last night with the watering can Shes 90 and my niece (who lives there) is on holiday. I watered it all but did extra for the tomato plants and the pear tree.

FurForksSake · 09/08/2026 18:19

Have an allotment and a garden to water. Not using a hose pipe at all. One person fills cans while the other waters. I use dozens of cans at the allotment, but I’m used to it as hosepipes have never been allowed. Back and front gardens I am mostly doing newish plants, my wisteria and trees and my pots. And my roses. The grass died weeks and weeks ago.

squashyhat · 09/08/2026 18:19

Further to my rather bolshy post earlier, we have started capturing grey water in earnest today by doing washing up/rinsing in a bowl and keeping kettle and teapot dregs and veg cooking water. My plant pots have never had so much water this summer - it's amazing how much just goes down the drain. And that's just one day.

Nannyfannybanny · 09/08/2026 18:39

Doesn't take much effort to use a watering can, well my veg plot is 200 feet from my bungalow. I'm now showering with the bath plug in scooping it out and carrying it down,so the veg doesn't die.

catunderneighbourssofa · 09/08/2026 18:49

We are complying but we are in a Thames Water area so 70% of our plants we can use a hosepipe for as it's food. The other 30% we are carrying can after can to keep alive. No lawn to worry about and I have let a few less important plants go.
Waterbutts are emply ( also containers I keep to catch water at the back of beds dry too). No water is wasted but I am not letting the fruit bushes that keep the bees so happy die.

tsmainsqueeze · 09/08/2026 18:52

6ate9 · 09/08/2026 10:39

I feel contempt for the water companies and think it was a huge mistake of Margaret Thatcher to privatise them. But this is where we are right now, we have severe drought in parts of the UK so we need it to rain. No person or company can make that happen!!

Of course they can't !
But it's not unreasonable to expect an efficiently run company throughout the year who fixes leaks promptly ,invests in the infrastructure, makes adequate preparation for situations like this.
It's not unreasonable to have these expectations when paying the verging on extortionate fees they charge for which we have no choice.

Summersongroses · 09/08/2026 18:55

I am complying yes.
Watering my small garden with a watering cans. Like another poster said, I have 2 cans. I water with one whilst the other one if filling up and swap them over. I must use the same amount of water but I spent a fortune on plants and growing things from seeds so I refuse to let them die.
