If you are on a hosepipe ban, are you complying?

Just curious really - if you are, will you continue to, whatever, even if it decimates everything? Is your garden small or big?

For transparency, I am ( grumpily) complying, but don't know what state the garden will be in before long, which makes me very sad. My garden is mid sized I would say.

We have a garden but don't own a hosepipe anyway!

Octavia64 · 08/08/2026 21:22

Yes.

watering from a can.

i am technically exempt but I don’t own a hosepipe anyway

TofuTuesday · 08/08/2026 21:25

Yes we are exempt but I think that’s a broad brush so am using a can, and the water butt.

WhatsHerNameThingummy · 08/08/2026 21:36

We are using a watering can to keep the most important plants alive. Of course we are not using a hose!

We are also capturing grey water indoors and dc have switched to quick low-pressure showers instead of baths.

Im surprised how well the shrubs are doing with no water! But it’s been five weeks + since we saw any rain and none forecast for the foreseeable.

Our three water butts ran dry ages ago.

catspyjamas1 · 08/08/2026 21:41

No.

HoppityBun · 08/08/2026 21:43

Yes. I top up my pond with a hose for the wildlife both aquatic and non aquatic and I know they need this. I have 2 very young trees that I’ve started hose watering because they were dying in front of my eyes and are at the bottom of the garden where I can’t carry a watering can to. I think those two are allowed. The rest of the garden is dried to a crisp. I was already planting for drought but I’ve revised my plans further by noticing what is surviving.

I save all my washing up water and use it in the garden. I stand in my garden trug to shower and wash my hair but I’ve found that I don’t actually need to shower much if I have a twice daily pits and parts wash. So I hope I’m doing my bit.

Plus I only flush the loo for.. er… solids.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 08/08/2026 21:46

Only for the pond. We have newts. Other wise is a can for pots and new plants. It’s doing my head in.

SemmaLina · 08/08/2026 21:48

Not on a ban , but would use hose pipe as on a water metre

Ineffable23 · 08/08/2026 21:49

I've never watered anything that's in the ground, except a fig tree which seems remarkably fussy and upset about the lack of rain for a sun loving plant.

Pots I water using a can. But I have two cans, leave one filling while I empty one can, and repeat. It's no more or less water than I would use using a hosepipe frankly.

Please tell me this is a wind up

Holesfreakmeout · 08/08/2026 21:54

Yes, but we use 40 10L watering cans to water the garden every day so we aren’t really saving any water by not using the hosepipe

canthavetoomanylights · 08/08/2026 21:56

Not on a ban but I won’t be letting my plants die if we get one. I will use the hose to selectively water…I won’t use the sprinkler on the lawn because it will recover, but I will water pots and new plants. Frankly if that’s not good enough, I don’t care.

Good grief! That must take hours!

We are. But we have an irrigation system in all our beds and borders so we are allowed to use it. Our trees and lawn look desperate though.

All of our friends that we’ve had over have admitted they’re using hosepipes regardless.

Baileyss · 08/08/2026 22:02

No. I won’t let my garden die.

PeterRabbitsWhiskers · 08/08/2026 22:02

The only things that get hosed are hanging baskets that I am too short to reach with a watering can and was wasting water trying.

About an hour

mondaytosunday · 08/08/2026 22:06

Yes.

TheCurious0range · 08/08/2026 22:06

We were away for two weeks and the hosepipe ban started the day at got back, our cat sitter was meant to water our fruit and veg plants but hadn't, so I did use it on that day as things were half dead and I guess my justification was that we'd used no water at all for two weeks, the next morning I went out and bought a watering can. Ironically there has been a mains water leak flowing down the street near me for 9 days now that's still going strong...

AllTheChicken · 08/08/2026 22:06

Ours are water restrictions rather than a hosepipe ban, so we collect water from showers and cooking etc, as well as rain water to use for the garden and local pots. People think by not using a hosepipe theyre adhering and theyre not necessarily, although it is harder to use as much from cans

Wincher · 08/08/2026 22:09

We have a roof garden at work which we have a rota to water (optional to sign up for the rota!) and it’s in central London so we have a hosepipe ban. We’ve got two watering cans and are filling one/using one so really not using any less water than with the hose but at least are sticking to the letter of the law!

Which bit? Why would any of it be a wind up? Nothing I’ve said is unusual

tapdancingmum · 08/08/2026 22:13

We are filling the pond and watering my tree with the hose but everything else is with watering cans.
Our main Road was dug us last August for thrm to re-lay the water pipes (and its still going on) and we have just had to road closed, again, as there is a water leak. It's a joke that we are trying our very best and we are having the road dug up every week for water leaks along a new pipe that was to replace the old pipe!

notwhingingjuststatingfacts · 08/08/2026 22:13

Nope! Not a chance. Water company where I am are loose 100s millions of litres every day due to leaks. There is a leak down the road that has been running for six months.
We didn’t have a dry day for the first two plus months this year. It’s not my responsibility to deal with the piss poor management and lack of maintenance and investment of the water companies. All local reservoirs still are over 50% capacity. So no real concerns about running out od water.

So I’m damned if I’m going to let my kitchen garden go without water and die.

Yes, but we use 40 10L watering cans to water the garden every day so we aren’t really saving any water by not using the hosepipe

I have timed how long it takes to fill the 30-odd watering cans we would have to use daily to keep our specialist (and rather rare) plant collection alive. I have also timed how long it takes to water the exact same pots using the hosepipe with a fine rose on the end. In the time it takes to water with the hose, it would have only filled about 15 cans, and there is far less wastage. All the water goes into the pots, whereas with the can + rose, half of it misses its target and is wasted.

So for us, using the hosepipe for pots uses far less water. We have an exemption anyway, but I thought I'd mention it.
