If you are on a hosepipe ban, are you complying?

Just curious really - if you are, will you continue to, whatever, even if it decimates everything? Is your garden small or big?

For transparency, I am ( grumpily) complying, but don't know what state the garden will be in before long, which makes me very sad. My garden is mid sized I would say.

No I would not comply for several reasons:

My water bill has doubled in the last 4 years (not on a meter).
The CEO of our water board recently got a £660k bonus.
We were on a hosepipe ban from July to December last year.
My garden is already looking yellow.

I won’t take the mick but I’m also not going to diligently stick to any bans this year.

It’s about time water was nationalised again, NOBODY should be making a profit from essential resources.

Rooflight · 08/08/2026 22:16

We have a dripper system in the beds, on a timer and that’s permitted during the ban.

tealandteal · 08/08/2026 22:17

I can’t believe anyone has time for 40 watering cans!

I am on a hosepipe ban, we are complying. I take 4L of water over to the allotment once a day to water the pumpkins, most other plants are dead or surviving surprisingly well.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 08/08/2026 22:17

I’m exempt due to disability reasons but even if I wasn’t I wouldn’t comply. Mainly for the same reasons as others have listed.

Divebar2021 · 08/08/2026 22:17

People always have an excuse why rules don’t apply to them.

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/08/2026 22:18

i don’t use a hose as ban in my area. Garden is very large and very brown.

Fatiguedwithlife · 08/08/2026 22:18

NO hosepipe ban here and I’m watering my medium sized garden. I would anyway tbh

Fatiguedwithlife · 08/08/2026 22:20

My sunflowers 🌻 and green grass!
We’ve just been ‘down south’ for 2 weeks and I can’t believe how dead all the grass is 😞

Please tell me this is a wind up

I had a double take at the trug bit but I think she means she takes the empty trug and stands in it in the shower, not that she’s showering in the garden! 😄

SleepingisanArt · 08/08/2026 22:23

You can use a hose during a ban for new plants and trees, newly laid lawn and for fruit and veg if it would 'be impractical' to use a watering can. You can also use it to keep a pond topped up and 'animal welfare' (possibly open to interpretation!)

We don't have a ban yet and our clay soil is currently like concrete. Some plants are doing well, some are just coping but need watering and I've lost a couple which were absolutely frazzled. I'm watering to keep them alive and the birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife are very grateful!

MayaPyjama · 08/08/2026 22:23

No ban yet (our previous ban was not long ago listed) but I will comply if we get one.

All those filling ponds - do you dechlorinate etc as well? I only ever refill the pond from the water butts as I thought the tap water was harmful to anything living in the pond? I’m actually quite anal about not getting even splashes of tap/hose water in there so I’m intrigued you’re all filling with the hose.

DinoLil · 08/08/2026 22:25

Yes.
I'm exempt but font on a hose pipe. Watering can does the job.

Butterbeanbutterbo · 08/08/2026 22:25

I’ve got flea beetle infestation on brassicas and the nematodes for those require damp soil for a week or two to work, so using a hose for that, but otherwise using watering can for veg and pots. Letting other things slowly dry up, but some of it is actually doing ok

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 08/08/2026 22:27

Those of you using a hose to water your garden, have you ever tested how deep the water is penetrating the ground? It takes an awful lot of water to make a discernible difference around the roots. Watering every day is ridiculous and is probably having the opposite effect in that the plants never develop deep roots to search out water, so the plants are more susceptible in drought conditions when the surface dries out.

Better to make a hole near the main stem and water directly into that, so the water goes straight to the roots. Otherwise you’re just wasting water.

And while I get those saying no because their water company is a shambles and wasting loads of water by not fixing leaks or investing in infrastructure, why make the problem worse by not complying? The water companies don’t give a fuck about your protest, they’ll just put your bill up further. Will you feel like you stuck it to the man when the reservoirs are down at 10%?

Aweekoffwork · 08/08/2026 22:28

My neighbour has a Blue Badge so is exempt from the ban BUT her husband is fit and well, and can certainly lift a watering can, so their grass is beautifully green. The grass is definitely greener 😜

Perpetuallywondering · 08/08/2026 22:29

We’re complying. Finding it bizarrely satisfying siphoning off kids’ bathwater and saving grey water. Some plants haven’t appreciated bath bubbles but others have done quite well!

We are. But we have an irrigation system in all our beds and borders so we are allowed to use it. Our trees and lawn look desperate though.

All of our friends that we’ve had over have admitted they’re using hosepipes regardless.

How selfish and disgusting. It would really affect my opinion of them. Yes the infrastructure isn't perfect by a mile, but finally South East Water seem to have better leadership. Their staff on the ground have been working very hard to fix issues. Big outages in Tonbridge and their crews working long hours and through the nights to fix it. The last thing they need or customers is for water to run short because selfish fuckers can't understand basic instructions.

Holesfreakmeout · 08/08/2026 21:54

Yes, but we use 40 10L watering cans to water the garden every day so we aren’t really saving any water by not using the hosepipe

How long would it take to water with a hosepipe?

LaurieFairyCake · 08/08/2026 22:37

Im hose watering the 5 trees I have in pots (as you’re allowed)

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/08/2026 22:39

Having a bath or shower must surely use the same amount of water to quickly water plants /grass etc via a hose pipe

I have fake grass (shock horror as mn hates it) but I love it and no watering needed 😂

tho we have has leaks where I live and no water for 2/3 days and had water stations where was given almost 100l of water daily in bottles

flushing a toilet takes about 7 litres and this suprised me

How unbelievably selfish. I don't know where you are but we have a hosepipe ban and you are not allowed to use your irrigation system either. Its really hard watching vast swathes of your garden die but I'm doing my best with saving shower water as it heats up and watering cans just on a new tree, veg and fruit plus phlox which can't cope at all. That's it....

Incenses me that car washes are still allowed to operate, literally no one needs a clean car, no one. Drive your dusty car with pride I say.

It’s surprising it only takes an hour but it is a bit relentless having to do it night after night. We wouldn’t have planted as many pots if we had known there would be a hosepipe ban.

PinkCatCushion · 08/08/2026 22:42

Yes, but I curse the water companies with every single watering can I fill.
They are wasting millions of gallons every day with their leaks - why do we have to suffer so they can make money for their shareholders?

Car washes recycle all their water don’t they?

Is it too hot to sit on the plastic in this heat?
