If you are on a hosepipe ban, are you complying?

Just curious really - if you are, will you continue to, whatever, even if it decimates everything? Is your garden small or big?

For transparency, I am ( grumpily) complying, but don't know what state the garden will be in before long, which makes me very sad. My garden is mid sized I would say.

No ban here, only place in the south apparently. Went past the main reservoir and it’s 3/4 full so don’t feel bad about watering the garden (very small anyway)

tsmainsqueeze · 09/08/2026 10:32

I am not using a hose mainly because i'm too busy to think about the garden at the moment but i don't care if anyone does use one.
I care deeply about the world and nature ,recycling ,the usual etc but at the same time i hate the water companies with a passion, how dare they tell us what to do when they are robbing us all and taking the absolute piss with their incompetence's .
The majority of the year is not like this so what are they doing during that time ? obviously not enough to provide for us during drought conditions such as these.
If i can see that my plants are beginning to suffer then i will use my hose.
I think the vast majority feel similar contempt for the water companies.

I feel contempt for the water companies and think it was a huge mistake of Margaret Thatcher to privatise them. But this is where we are right now, we have severe drought in parts of the UK so we need it to rain. No person or company can make that happen!!

6ate9 · 09/08/2026 10:14

I agree with you but it’s not going to stop parts of the UK from having severe water shortages right now. If it doesn’t rain soon in some areas, what do you think is going to happen? Water companies can’t make it rain!!

While we’re all asked to save water there’s still massive amounts leaking out of underground pipes because the water companies haven’t maintained them. They’re utterly incompetent.
No, they can’t make it rain, but it’s well within their remit to make a dry spell very manageable.

Whynottryagain · 09/08/2026 10:46

Yes I certainly am.

I have a big garden. Most things in the ground are being left to fend for themselves unless they start to look like they're struggling. Tubs are being watered with water captured in trugs during showers, washing up water and captured water in tubs in every sink (so every time we run the tap for any reason we capture water).

The plant pots are all doing pretty well. Tbh I'm lazy and hate waiting for watering cans to fill up, so using captured water is resulting in the pots being watered more than before the hosepipe ban!

I agree with you. Many of the underground water pipes and sewer pipes in the UK date back to the Victorian era. They need replacing which is happening but takes time and of course money!! It’s terrible that water companies have been so negligent.

That's overly simplistic. In our area the government is pushing through huge amounts of house building despite water companies and the EA saying the area is too dry to support it.

So true!! Their selfishness will affect others who are obeying the rules.

Why won't they think of those who will perish because they can't get a cup of tea? 🙄

This country is ridiculous. Why are the water companies allowed to mismanage our water supply?

Why do we use drinking water in the toilet?

Why aren't the companies regulated?

Why do they keep building houses with no improvements to the water supply and infrastructures?

Inthesummertimewhen · 09/08/2026 10:58

All these new houses and flats are a massive worry we have been told we all new new reservoirs ....let's get on with it !

I to have never seen as many water leaks all around as now I can't believe it.
However. No rain is no rain. I don't want to be collecting water from a stand pipe

We are being compliant and giving the garden a good soak every few days with a water can

MayaPyjama · 08/08/2026 22:23

No ban yet (our previous ban was not long ago listed) but I will comply if we get one.

All those filling ponds - do you dechlorinate etc as well? I only ever refill the pond from the water butts as I thought the tap water was harmful to anything living in the pond? I’m actually quite anal about not getting even splashes of tap/hose water in there so I’m intrigued you’re all filling with the hose.

Yes of course. I have to top up quite frequently because we have so little rain. It isn’t in fact chlorine that’s the problem- that will evaporate of if you leave water to stand. What’s used now in drinking water is chloramine, which is much more stable and harmful for pond life.

I get a product from my local aquatic store, can’t remember the name, but it says on it that you can’t overdose it.

smallglassbottle · 09/08/2026 11:05

The water bills are all going up by 10% to pay for repairs, upgrades etc. What's to bet it ends up in shareholders pockets and the repairs, upgrades are never done?

I don’t know how there would be a separate grey water system for non drinking water, because it’s quite a significant exercise to manage large quantities of grey water.

I live in Suffolk where we have little rain at the best of times and I find it astonishing and upsetting to see people power washing their driveways as though fresh, clean drinking water is an unlimited resource. The rivers have be dry since April and it’s bewildering why people don’t grasp the implications. Perhaps they never go outside their little worlds. Just because it’s on tap doesn’t mean it’s there for ever. I think water in the future will be rationed as a norm.

The fact that there are multiple leakages doesn’t absolve anyone from personal responsibility of what is a life or death resource. The whataboutery will literally kill people. “I’m not being responsible because I can point my finger at someone else who isn’t”. The Danube is at its lowest recoded level and Romania recently had to set off explosions in the river to cool nuclear reactors.

I asked someone once, who was working on a mains drain, what they weren’t addressing leaks more quickly and he said it’s difficult to get the permissions from the council as quickly as they need..

ConfusedSoShutUp · 09/08/2026 11:15

Day to day for the garden yes.

For the drunk induced vomit left on the deck by 18yo DS at some point this morning....no.

Sorry Anglian water/the planet...but needs must.

DS feeling very sorry for himself and commenting, slightly tipsyly still, about his questionable life choices!

Edited for typo

How do you know if there is a hosepipe ban? Do they tell you or is it up to you to find out?

Digerydont · 09/08/2026 11:27

Yes, I don't intend to steal water from my fellow citizens

It’s quite widely publicised on social media and in local papers. But no, they don’t put a paper card through every door.

If you're not you bloody should be! All reservoirs really low up here in the north. Don't be a dick. We all have to play our part. Don't forget covid when everyone was out for themselves. Make sure we have enough to go around.

While I agree everyone needs to help with not filling pools etc, I do think using a spray gun to keep plants alive is very different - particularly for older people who aren't able to lug buckets and watering cans. If there is a wildfire it is dry areas that are at risk and one spark from an idiot starting one will always use up more water to put out than everyone in a town saves not keeping their plants alive using a few litres of an evening. If we made the water companies fix leaks before they could impose a ban that might work, use up their bonuses and capital before paying shareholders to keep water in the pipes in the first place.

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 09/08/2026 11:33

No. Because I use more water watering the garden with a watering can. I’m not going to let all the plants die so I’m watering them using the hose spray gun. There are also parts of our garden where the plants are above my head. My husband did try using the kids’ super soaker but it’s essentially a hose spray gun anyway!

mumumental · 09/08/2026 11:34

I agree that multiple leakages (from those greedy fools at the water company) doesn’t absolve anyone. We are all responsible for things such as water and for not creating a fire hazard outdoors.

mumumental · 09/08/2026 11:35

People who ignore the bans are people who just think they are more important than others.

Sillysausage76 · 09/08/2026 12:12

I use it on part of my garden but I have tortoises and im growing flowers, plants and veg for them. I don't use it out the front or side of house we use the watering butt's. Luckily were not on a meter, if we were i probably would cut back on some of the plants

6ate9 · 09/08/2026 12:25

mumumental · 09/08/2026 11:35

If our domestic water taps were turned off or we had strict rationing of water, those people would be complaining!!

Digerydont · 09/08/2026 12:25

Let's hope that we don't end up queuing at stand popes like we did in 1976. The wartime spirit of my parent's generation, has long gone. It's Everyman for himself these days.

milkhater · 09/08/2026 12:33

I fill up my watering can with my hose and just do my pots. Is that allowed?
