I know its the Daily Fail but ive been past this area and its become really shocking. Its a huge camp now. Why aren't the council doing anything?

The Romanian and Bulgarian beggar encampment blighting heart of London

Row upon row of tents, hurling dishwater onto the road, bathing on the central reservation, harassing passersby, and stealing booze and solvents from the local newsagent.

@MadeInGrimsby I quoted the person who said that Marine Le Pen said.

I probably explained it very badly, but what I meant was "here's another politician saying it - they're all full of shit" - apologies if that wasn't clear.

they go to the toilet within the camp and all over the area, I'm sorry to say. Hence the signs saying no defecating etc. Like they're going to pay attention.

I live in London and have not seen this or seen anything about it in local news media, so I had a bit of a google as I do not trust the Daily Mail's 'journalism'. The only evidence I could see was this article, GB'News' and an article about Westminster Council applying for an injunction to remove a camp from Hyde Park in May 2025. In none of the articles was the camp described as huge (the maximum I saw from these defamatory sources was 40). It is not ideal, but I think London councils have bigger worries.

I don’t live in London but have been aware of it for the last few years as it’s right by where I used to get the bus when I was heading back to the train station. I no longer take the bus back from that part of Euston Road as it’s so edgy.

Im not sure why Burnham thinks the North is so run down compared to the South, as London has turned into an utter shithole, from what I’ve seen.

Surely, since Brexit, they are not entitled to be there. Why doesn't the government simply charter some planes and return them to Bulgaria/ Romania?

They did several years ago...and many took the free flight and cash incentive and returned within a few days..!

ApplebyArrows · 08/08/2026 14:48

I can understand many people might not feel safe sleeping in the hostels. Am struggling to imagine how those people would feel any safer sleeping in a tent next to a gang of robbers, however.

Ok, many thanks for the clarification. 👍
I personally think it needs a radical approach, it must be attracting vermin at the very least. I worry about the public health risk.
I don't know if any politician has the stomach to deal with it..we'll see what Burnham does!

Davros · 08/08/2026 14:49

I’m a bit skeptical about this. I go through that area a lot and, while there are certainly homeless tents, I’ve never seen anything like this. Up to a month ago, DD was working at quite a crappy pub on the Tottenham Court Road at the Warren Street end. She was coming home at 2am-3am regularly. Although the homeless were certainly a factor in the area and sometimes a problem, she saw nothing like this. Time they all slung their hooks if you ask me

I don’t understand how someone who has been deported can just fly back into the country. Any sane and functional control system would prevent this.

I wonder if his entitlement to the hostel accommodation ended when his asylum failed? I'm not sure what the process is, so am happy to be corrected on this.

BillieWiper · 08/08/2026 14:51

Do you live there? If so why don't you contact your local MP?

If you don't, I fail to see why a load of homeless people camping on a roundabout directly affects your day to day quality of living?

I feel sympathy for people living in such inhumane and squalid conditions. The only decent solution would be to house them but I doubt you'd take kindly to them being given homes in the most expensive boroughs in the UK? So where do you want them to go?

You'd think! When I recall the number of times I've been checked at airports and ferry ports, I do wonder how they manage it. It takes bloody hours in Europe now.

Technically if you are a big issue seller you are classed as employed, and are are entitled to claim certain enhanced benefits. This loophole is fully exploited by the gangs who run the BI sellers and explains why many people , including me, don’t buy the BI any more. It has turned into a back door scam.

Yes, this has been the case from the early 90s, ridiculous , I know. There was even something in the news at that time about big issue sellers being bullied out by gangs from Eastern Europe.

The council aren't allowed to move them along anymore though.

it's exactly the same along Euston Road. I've seen that one with my own eyes.

Apparently, they're also between Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street and lots of other locations all over London but I try not to go to London these days.

Edited

A friend of mine lives there and she told me the camp was moved from Goodge Street in the past few months as the local residents started to feel very unsafe and targeted. Maybe that is how it ended up on the central reservation. No immediate neighbours to complain that the tents, beggars, thieves, aggro, wild dogs are on their doorsteps.

Clearly these people have a very tough life, but when they threaten innocent people in the neighbourhood, compassion dwindles.

Dollymylove · 08/08/2026 14:55

Round em all up and send em back. Why sre they here? Romania is not a warzone

Members of the group being discussed here weren't deported. They where offered fight tickets home, and some accepted them, others didn't.

Should have gone to

It’s right by Warren Street Tube.

@BillieWiper "The only decent solution would be to house them but I doubt you'd take kindly to them being given homes in the most expensive boroughs in the UK? So where do you want them to go?"

if you look at the myriad of articles about this, they have been offered homes several times

It won't be the same people over all these years, obviously

But there is a lot of outreach work in central London - I mean as a volunteer doing very little, I was genuinely amazed at how - I can't even find the word - I mean the people who do this stuff are just fantastic people. So yeah, there are a lot of people working really hard on the outreach projects. And I absolutely believe that these people have been offered accommodation as the article says. It will often be temporary accommodation, but that is the case when you are homeless. I would say it's mostly the case when you're homeless.

But they turned it down. Please don't think that people aren't making the effort.

i'm saying this for the park lane one in particular. I no longer volunteer and I don't have any contacts who volunteer so I have no idea what's been offered to those around the Euston area.

The issue will be resolved the minute an encampment is set up in the very affluent areas of London. But not in so called "ordinary areas". Would that be a reasonable assumption?

Wasn't there one in the Mayfair/Park Lane area, not long ago?
Maybe it's been moved.

Somebody needs to look into why they are there and maybe deal with it?

Why are they there? Has anybody addressed this?

Um, Park Lane? That is incredibly affluent. Why do you think that makes a difference? People who are driven by chauffeurs don’t care what’s on the road IME.

Bringemout · 08/08/2026 16:18

Just deport to be frank, moving to another country to go live in a tent and beg should never be an option for anyone.

Yes they were moved on. TfL owned the land (I just looked it up) and cleared it out. The campers moved to Oxford Street apparently. I'm only going on what came up in my search on Google though.

It's the same with HMO's and asylum accommodation. Rarely if ever in affluent suburbs or areas, but ubiquitous elsewhere. Money talks.

They were moved out. Well it is an affluent area with Embassies and all. Can't be eating the Ferrero Rocher looking at a transient camp.

It’s ridiculous if the decriminalisation of homelessness results in camps like these. I’ve seen them in Paris and it’s really horrible. I wonder who they are/how they got here, and what the possibilities are to return them to home countries?

Me and dp landed in Paris at night, and walked down a dark but busy road thinking it was the road to our hotel.
We came across these rows of tents and I was petrified. Even more so when we realised the road joined a motorway and we had to turn and walk past them all again with all our stuff.
There wasn’t anyone else around I was convinced we’d be murdered.
