I know its the Daily Fail but ive been past this area and its become really shocking. Its a huge camp now. Why aren't the council doing anything?

The Romanian and Bulgarian beggar encampment blighting heart of London

Row upon row of tents, hurling dishwater onto the road, bathing on the central reservation, harassing passersby, and stealing booze and solvents from the local newsagent.

I never said it would happen in a couple of weeks (I don’t think it will happen in a couple of centuries)

I was just pointing out that Marine Le Pen said it, and Andy Burnham said it…. Politicians are all full of crap is basically what I’m saying. they’ve said immediately comparable things in pretty much the same timeframe. Just an observation.

Andy Burnham has pledged to end homelessness. When was that? A few weeks ago.
It's not going to happen in such a short time frame. There are multiple reasons; some Romanians have a transitory lifestyle and are used to begging, that Sudanese man didn't like his hostel, there are people with addiction and mental health problems.
So to disparage Burnham for not dealing with it instantaneously is somewhat unreasonable.
The kind of regimes which do so, just round them up and incarcerate them. I don't think that's a solution.

ThisOldThang · 08/08/2026 14:04

It speaks volumes about our terminally wet politicians that they think it's acceptable and desirable to import beggars and let them set up camp in the middle of our capital city.

MauriceTheMussel · 08/08/2026 14:06

RodneyKitten · 08/08/2026 13:11

Why would I count the tents? That’s asking for trouble.

agree.

does the PP think were also working for the Daily Mail or Reform and making this up?

I used to get off at Warren St to go for my pregnancy scans. The first time I came out the underground and turned left, BOY, did I make a mistake. Not many pedestrians on the south strip of that road walking west. I was, as I said, pregnant…and terrified of their presence. It was shocking (and I’ve lived in London nearly 20 years and been to some really dystopian foreign cities).

Theres also a tent or two on the north side before you get to what is or used to be Vingt-Quatre

Gingernaut · 08/08/2026 14:06

It's not just London

There are rough sleepers where I am, with single man tents hidden in the undergrowth of dual carriageway, parks, other green spaces and in the abandoned building sites around here

So where should they go? They clearly don’t want to go ‘home’ or don’t feel they have one.
Families with children are housed, working age adults without are not - and definitely not if they don’t have the right paperwork. So where should they go? What are the options?

This ⬆️
There is a housing shortage, especially in London. Where can they go? It's less of a problem in my city, there are areas with social housing where Roma, migrants and asylum seekers, for example, can be housed relatively cheaply.
Central London? Not so much.

likelysuspect · 08/08/2026 14:09

Digerydont · 08/08/2026 13:54

Then they would be entitled to being housed by the council as homeless?

Yes, but they might not want that because you dont get to choose where you go. You'll be in a room, with rules, expectations, boundaries, other people who may not tolerate your anti social ways. You also have to stay in the accommodation or you'll lose it

AnitaCam · 08/08/2026 14:10

It’s difficult to fathom why they aren’t rounded up and sent home. The government should make it a priority. It’s unsanitary at the very least.

Arrest and deport them back to Romania and Bulgaria.

Depends whether they have settled status or not. If they were here pre-Brexit, can prove that and have registered for settled status then, like it or not, they are the UK's problem (more's the pity) and should receive the same treatment as anyone else who is homeless in this country.

If they don't have settled status then they should be deported back to whichever country they come from and tough luck if they don't want to go! It's high time the authorities in the UK got tough on people who have no right to be here and who are creating a public nuisance and committing crimes. I'd dearly love the police to publish the nationality of those committing crimes in this country, because any time I watch true crime documentaries about 8/10 times the criminal is not British.

They should remove these camps. The people are aggressive and steals from nearby shops. It’s also unsanitary. I hope London doesn’t become like Paris who have people sleeping everywhere now.

Move them where exactly? If we are going to let them into the UK, they have to stay somewhere 🤷‍♀️

TeaAndALittlePeace · 08/08/2026 14:17

ThisOldThang · 08/08/2026 14:13

Arrest and deport them back to Romania and Bulgaria.

Well this is the sensible answer, but unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be an option. Not sure why…

Enterthewolves · 08/08/2026 14:20

@EmeraldRoulette other posters @Elleherd for example have now covered a lot of the powers. We used trespass, public space protection orders, and bye laws. The repeal of the Vagrancy Act has made naff all difference to any of that. The difficulty is where do you move people to? Unless you have an alternative offer people will still be rough sleeping somewhere, and tent encampments will pop up again as it often feels safer to be in a group. You only have to look at LA or San Francisco to see what a lack of safe accommodation looks like, thousands of people in encampments. During Everyone In in COVID less than 2,000 people in the UK rough slept - because there were viable options for everyone regardless of status and need.

This is what most people want to see, but seems impossible for politicians to action. It feeds straight into support for people like Farage and worse. Quite frankly I am starting to understand the protest vote for those people and it really pains me to say that being usually a liberal leftie type person.

EmeraldRoulette · 08/08/2026 14:22

zurigo · 08/08/2026 13:59

thank you for confirming that. The 90s sounds about right. But that's when I became an adult mid 90s - so they've probably been there longer.

Actually, I may be wrong by saying the 90s. Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU on Jan 1, 2007, so they are unlikely to have been there before that date. It's a long time, that's for sure, but I'm guessing it started in 2007.

You know I'm thinking about this and you're right

Because it wasn't a problem when I was hanging around Hanover grand and the legendary Met Bar! Oh my god... that set me off down memory lane...a well
spent youth!

anyway, I have given up and asked AI

It's saying 2012 - I'm assuming that must be post Olympics. There's books about the amount of international corruption that arrives with every hosting of the Olympics so that actually makes sense.

EmeraldRoulette · 08/08/2026 14:25

@MadeInGrimsby sorry if I've misunderstood what you're saying

I haven't disparaged anybody

I don't think saying that politicians talk rubbish is a direct attack on anybody. I don't know why you're quoting me in what you said.

That's where I got it from.

I strongly suspect certain legal firms and other organisations would challenge this. With relish.

Nigel and Rupert will sort it

Well, I'm standing by that one

But I don't know why you mentioned Andy Burnham being in for a fortnight - of course, I don't expect anything to change in two weeks!

hahabahbag · 08/08/2026 14:36

Unfortunately these camps exist in most major cities around the world, some become semi permanent even in western countries. I was shocked at the quantity of tents on the west coast of the USA, every city had people sleeping in encampments

Ok, fair enough, but you said "Andy Burnham pledged to end homelessness....more empty promises", as though his promises had already come to nothing, and you had an expectation of rapid solutions.
However, you have clarified, and it was probably just an expression.

hahabahbag · 08/08/2026 14:40

Btw even villages and small towns have rough sleepers, our local one is friendly enough though the kids give him a wide berth (not a pleasant aroma!) thankfully the upside is the teens aren’t vandalising the bird hide now he sleeps in it, he doesn’t leave litter like they do

MadeInGrimsby · 08/08/2026 14:40

It must be an issue of public health, where are they going to the toilet?

viques · 08/08/2026 14:41

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 08/08/2026 13:29

This group are professional beggars who come for the opportunities that
crowded city streets offer, which vary from from begging, recycling unwanted goods, to pick pocketing, shop lifting, and crime.

I wonder if they are linked to the Eastern European female Big Issue sellers who also seem to be part of some scam too. If they can't find work in the UK they should be deported.

Technically if you are a big issue seller you are classed as employed, and are are entitled to claim certain enhanced benefits. This loophole is fully exploited by the gangs who run the BI sellers and explains why many people , including me, don’t buy the BI any more. It has turned into a back door scam.

I think there have always been rough sleepers, for various reasons. The issue here is the growth of what could be termed "shanty towns", which are different altogether.
