Getting my daughters birthday gifts together. She will be 8. Is she too old for this?

My just turned 8 year old is quite young in her tastes but Frozen is the one thing she declares as too babyish for her. I teach Y4 and wouldn't say the kids ever have Frozen bags or anything in the way they sometimes do in Y2. Is choose a different design. Mine has one with much bigger wheels which is great (Beleev brand, think on Amazon).

If I saw a Frozen themed scooter in the parking bit of the playpark, I'd probably assume it belonged to a 5/6 year old rather than an 8yo. But if Frozen is still her favourite thing and she's comfortable wearing/playing with Frozen things out and about then go for it. If you want a "safer" choice that may last a bit longer, I'd pick a plain coloured one.

goingtotown · 07/08/2026 16:13

The frozen Disney scooter is too young for an eight year old, it’s £16.99 so it’s more like a toy for a younger child.
Micro Scooters are a better option but more expensive. She’ll need a safety helmet too.

As pp said two wheel are hard .
Getting the proper three wheel maybe better to use I can't remember the name of yne popular brand it's pricey we got ours cheaper from a German shop called den rollenshop

Micro scooter that's it !

Edited

I'd say 3 wheeled would be too young for an 8yo - my 6yo and lots of her friends got 2 wheeled ones last Christmas and were fine after a bit of practice (although the first few weeks were very slow and I thought Santa had made a mistake 😅)

I would also agree with PPs about a non- "themed" one for longevity and if possible one that can be extended as they grow. Although much more expensive unless you can find second hand.

2 wheel is perfectly appropriate for age 8. Micro also make them and give ages 5-12 as the guide. Whether or not a cheap one is as good as the Micro one IDK but I certainly wouldn’t be buying a 3 wheeled one for an 8YO, round here the oldest kids you get on 3 wheel scooters are about 6/7.

mindutopia · 07/08/2026 17:45

My 8 year old would much rather ride his bike than a scooter. I’d say scooters are more aimed at 3-5 year olds, hence why it’s frozen themed.

Will it suit her height and interests?

Yes to height and she does like frozen.

Why not?

Scooter yes. Frozen no. That’s more 5:6 if going by mini blondes - she loved it then. Not now at 9 and did t at 7/8

i would get a more plain design if want her to still play with it at 9/10 +

Well frozen is actually recommended 6+ but anyway, she has asked for a scooter. I will look at different designs.

I just thought I would get her a cheap one and if she uses it/likes it then I'll buy her a nice one for Christmas.

Oh! She doesn't call Frozen babyish. She is only just going to year 3. It's a bit sad how quickly they are growing up now - as if Frozen is 'babyish'. It's meant for 6+ and even has branded make up!

Having seen this in person I would say try and get her a more sturdy one. This one is very small and rickety (hence the price) my 4 year old has tried it and it’s not easy or enjoyable to ride.

Thank you.

I'd look at the quality of the scooter. There can be a huge variety in the quality of the bearings and the polyurethane used in the wheels. Even if it feels nice to ride in store, a lesser quality scooter will be unpleasantly bumpy and slow outside, whereas a decent quality one will just glide. Ones marketed for stunt capability will usually be really pleasant on bike paths and pavements, even if you never want her to use park ramps.

And if she does want to use park ramps, I'd advise never allowing it on a scooter not designed for ramps. I've seen horrible accidents where light scooters stall or collapse on ramps.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 07/08/2026 18:34

We have 3 children and have bought cheaper scooters 🛴 but the best are the micro scooters and they last. The wheels light up too and the colours are great. We only buy micro scooters now and recently upgraded our 9 year olds from a micro scooter with smaller wheels to a bigger wheeled one. He loves it.

With regard to people saying 3 wheel scooters are too babyish for age 8, my daughter had a 3 wheel from about 5-8 and then asked for a 2 wheel. She hated it and kept using her 3 wheel which she was really too big for. So a few months later I got her a 3 wheel aimed at age 8+ and she loves it. She could use the 2 wheel but hated it and preferred a 3 wheel. It’s also handy when we’re at the park or wherever that she can just get off it and it stands up rather than having to lean it against something or lie it down.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 07/08/2026 18:41

got my 8 year old one. Two wheelers are for around that age. Personally I think they’re too old for frozen but every kid is different so that’s just mine

hugasaurus · 07/08/2026 18:42

Another vote for Micro scooters. These cheap ones are just all a bit crap. We bought a cheap one for DD1 and it put her off scooting for ages as it was so shitty to steer. She eventually agreed to try the Micro and now she’s never off hers, little sister too. I’ve even scooted back from school on it occasionally!

They do 3-wheelers for all ages too, even adults.

Danikm151 · 07/08/2026 18:42

I’d say get a plain one in case she decides she doesn’t like frozen anymore. My son has this one and decorates his helmet with stickers. Last year was dinos- now we have sonic. He’s 6 but the scooter will last ages as it’s height adjustable.

I know 6+ is the rating on Disney+ but in reality most girls kids have their frozen phase at about age 3-6 and are well over it by age 8. I doubt it’ll be a favourite still by the end of Y3, probably not even by Christmas, so it’s just a bit of a waste to buy something she’ll be likely to outgrow so soon. And at that price there are also concerns about the quality and ease of riding. So it just seems quite pointless and wasteful tbh. Better bet would be to go for a 2 wheeled micro one and then likely she’ll be using it until she finishes primary school if not longer (I sometimes see younger secondary age kids on them).

My 4 year old can ride a two wheeled scooter And so can several of his friends, I’d be very surprised if an 8 year old needed a three wheel one!

I'm not really sure why you asked if you're going to be so dismissive of everyone's responses. You could have said early on in the thread yes it's the right height and yes she loves Frozen. Great, then it's the scooter for her! But I was giving you my experience of an 8 year old who still watches Peppa Pig regularly so isn't some cool, grown-up type.

I've taught Y3, Y4 or Y3/4 for over a decade and whilst Frozen might be rated for 6+, it's not what girls that age are typically into. You see loads of three year in Elsa dresses - they've not necessarily seen the film, they just love Elsa with her blonde hair and nice singing. You're being completely unrealistic if you don't think children will declare some things babyish at some point. The girls I teach wouldn't make fun of anyone for having a Frozen scooter but it definitely wouldn't be the first choice for the majority of the. If you know she will love it because she's a big Frozen fan then obviously just go for it.

Needmorelego · 07/08/2026 18:56

@FedUp120028 if she's specifically asked for a scooter why not let her choose?
Go to Smyths or Decathlon to try some out.
