I saw this post elsewhere today.

I heard Simon Mayo playing Coming Up by Wings today. Not heard it for years, my dad used to think he was singing Tommy Yogurt

Other gems included ....

Macy Gray - I wear goggles when you are not here

DJ Luck & MC Neat - Ali with the mittens on, Ali with the mittens on (repeat several times)

The Wanted - She can't sing, she can't dance, but who cares, she walks like my nanna

"Dance dance were ever you may be I am the lord of the dance settee" lord of the dance, I was a late reader and needed glasses!

Oops, this me! I literally only realised this last month! 😳😄

Isn’t it fairly obvious that the scarf colour in the previous line “your scarf it was apricot” is a fairly laboured way of finding a rhyme with “gavotte”?

The comedian Richard Herring once built a whole comedy routine around this. 😄

In a similar vein I always used to wonder why Cyndi Lauper thought someone's true colours were beautiful like Ray Moore (Radio 2 DJ of yesteryear, for those less long in the tooth than me) and why the Waitresses were singing to Terry Griffiths (snooker player - and it was 'Merry Christmas', doh. 😂)

Friend of mine always used to hear the 'baby, baby' in Spagna's Call Me as 'David Bailey'.

The Terry Griffiths one reminds me of the infamous time when Dexy's Midnight Runners appeared on TOTP singing 'Jackie Wilson Said' and deliberately put up a photo of darts player Jocky Wilson on the screen at the back!

the80sweregreat · 18/08/2026 10:15

The Jockey Wilson photo on top of the pops whilst Dexys were singing was funny!

Why would he be doing a mediaeval French peasant dance in the first place?! It is an extremely tenuous set-up, just for the rhyme, isn't it?! Why would the colour of your scarf randomly denote a serious character flaw anyway?

FunPeachEagle · 18/08/2026 10:22

You must be a ULYSSES!!! - Little Red Corvette.

Been listening to it for 40 years and still don't know what it really is.

It's 'you must be a limousine'!

It all comes from the first line “You walked in to the party like you were walking on to a YACHT”. Once that was locked in (and it is a great first line) she obviously got the thesaurus out and git carried away 😀

TBH until I saw the line earlier in this thread I didn’t know she was singing that the scarf was apricot. I thought she was naming a designer I hadn’t heard of and couldn’t make out what was being said.

it does make sense now - yacht, apricot, gavotte.

That does make a lot of sense!

I had to look up Saratoga years ago too!

Explanation of choice of “gavotte” here…

For a long time I thought Billy Joel was singing "Trouble in the sewers" in We didn't start the fire and only recently did it click that I realised it was "Trouble in the Suez" 🤦🏻‍♀️

For about 40 years I've been singing "do you come from an under wonder" and have only recently found out it's actually "doesn't you come from a land down under". Even though that us the title of the song...

Jojo was a man who thought he was a woman, but he knew it couldn't last"

You're fairly close as the 2nd verse has very similar lyrics

AgentCooperdreamsofTibet · Yesterday 12:27

On a previous thread like this, a poster said that she had misheard Ray Parker Jr singing:

Who ya gonna call?
Those bastards!

This pops into my head randomly and always makes me laugh.

Like others, I thought Abba were asking "how did it feel when you won the war?" for a very long time. Being from Glasgow though I picked up on the Super Trouper lyric immediately but assumed it was wrong for decades - kept trying to work out what the real word was. Surely nobody would write a song about Glasgow?

A few years ago, I was telling my family about the Tatiana song which kept playing on the radio. Lyrics: This is Tatiana (repeat). After many days it turned out it was Little Mix singing just a touch of your love.

I also thought that Pulp's Lipgloss had the line:

You feel like such a fool, for laughing at badgers, and putting up with his friends.

It's bad jokes. Makes much more sense.

Good quality headphones have been a revelation in the last 20 years.

I think I prefer the misheard lyrics to the original ones :)

Also appreciating the badgers, Kevin and the sewers.
