Misheard song lyrics that still make you smile years later

I saw this post elsewhere today.

I heard Simon Mayo playing Coming Up by Wings today. Not heard it for years, my dad used to think he was singing Tommy Yogurt

Other gems included ....

Macy Gray - I wear goggles when you are not here

DJ Luck & MC Neat - Ali with the mittens on, Ali with the mittens on (repeat several times)

The Wanted - She can't sing, she can't dance, but who cares, she walks like my nanna

I know it can't be this but in Dead Ringer for Love, when he sings "You've got the kind of legs that do more than walk," I can never catch her reply but to me it sounds like "I don't have to listen to this wankerish talk."

Frankly I reckon that whatever the real lyric is, it probably isn't as good as mine.

Big fan of the later exchange:
"You've got the kind of lips that do more than drink"
"You've got the kind of mind that does less than think!"

I think it’s “i don’t have to listen to your whimpering talk”.

Its sweet Loretta Martin (in the next verse) thought she was a woman but she was another man.
So easy mix up.

The Beatles were quite ahead of their time when it came to 'gender identity' and people nonchalantly changing their pronouns.

In Ob-la-di-ob-la-da, verse 3 says:
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face
And in the evening, she still sings it with the band

In verse 4, it says:
Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening, she's a singer with the band

I suppose the 'she' in v4 could be referring back to Molly, but in the light of the previous line and the fact that it's already said still in v3, but is now presenting it as new information, I can only assume that Desmond was jealous of Molly and wanted in on it too!

Hands-down, the best ever mis-heard lyric has to be The Four Seasons and Let's Hang On To What We've Got.

Just after 2 minutes in, Frankie is allegedly singing "Give me a second turning" (which isn't actually a phrase and doesn't actually make sense anyway); but no matter how many times you listen to it, nothing will ever convince me that he isn't singing "Give me a feckin' turnip!" Grin

When my DD was about 12 she asked what song I used a play a lot, the only bit she could remember was it was about a Cilla Black fan on a bike

Turned out it was Meatloafs Bat out of Heĺl and it's a silver Black phantom bike

Shes now in her 40s and we've never let her live it down 😅

She will be very, very, very far from the only British person who ever heard it like that!!

Tworedgeraniums · 07/08/2026 16:43

I’m so honey honey honey

DD was five. I wasn’t putting her right.

I've never been able to listen to 'Boxerbeat' the way it was intended since someone wrote in to Smash Hits saying 'Why are they doing the butter bean?'

Oh, and I just remembered I always heard the first line of 'Israelites' by Desmond Dekker as 'Get up in the morning eating your breakfast' (it's 'Get up in the morning slaving for bread, sir') and could never work out how you could be already eating your breakfast as you were getting up. Tbf I would have only been about 7 at the time that song was re-released in the 70s, but I totally missed the more famous mondegreen of 'me ears are alight' in the same song...

Come on Annie, ohhohh Come on Annie (Come on Eileen… it was only when they were on Family Guy doing the Lois sketch that I realised 😂)

All that she wants is chips and peas and gravy, she’s going tomorrow. I remember all my friends singing this so clearly I wasn’t alone.

Oh Carolina (ba daa dum…) jump across. I thought she was trying to jump across a stream as brook jumping was THE activity when I was a kid.

Jojo was a man who thought he was a woman, but he knew it couldn't last"

I thought that was the lyric! Just googled it, realised it's really not- doh!

Dire Straits: “Money for nothing and your chips for free.”
Spoken over the real lyrics when DC were small.

Making love in a femidom. Apparently it's were giving live in a family dose. I'm not convinced.

And 'my lovers got no money, he's got his trombloese'

I don't know what a trombloese is but I will never be convinced it's some nonsense about strong beliefs

Omg I always wondered what trombolese was!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

There was a famous Ad for Vitalite spread that used that song and the first line in that was definitely about “wanting some breakfast”.
