EU faces gas shortages and rising utility costs, Politico reports
Gas reserves in European storage facilities have fallen to their lowest level since record-keeping began in 2011, dropping to just above 70%.
Analysts estimate that Europe could face a gas shortfall of up to 14 billion cubic meters this winter, equivalent to approximately 7% of total demand. That volume is comparable to the annual consumption of 10–12 million European households.
If the winter is cold, EU countries will have to secure additional supplies on the expensive global market or cut consumption. However, gas prices are already hovering near a four-year high, the publication notes.
Meanwhile, the EU plans to ban long-term contracts for Russian LNG supplies starting in January 2027.
Under a worst-case scenario, gas reserves in European storage facilities could fall to 11% by the end of winter.

OpenAI has blocked a Russian network involved in operations targeting Ukraine and spreading disinformation in Latin America, according to a report.
The campaign aimed to discredit Ukraine, undermine support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and stage high-profile provocations.
The operation was disguised as the “Sociological Research Center” (SRC) and led by a fictional persona named “Mia Clark.” Local employees were reportedly unaware of the network’s ties to Russia.
The group used ChatGPT via VPN to draft reports and generate fake documents and audio content.
OpenAI blocked the associated accounts and shared the information it had gathered with the relevant authorities.
The company also blocked an Iranian network that used seven fictional “journalists” to promote anti-American content in global media.
🚨 Putin’s planes were unable to land in Moscow amid a Ukrainian drone attack, with one aircraft diverted to St. Petersburg, according to Important Stories (Vazhnye Istorii).
Three aircraft were returning from Turkmenistan, where Putin’s visit ended on October 9. All three were Il-96-300PU models, known as “Doomsday planes.” These airborne command posts are equipped with special communications systems that allow Russia’s leadership to maintain contact with the military, even in the event of a nuclear war.
It is unclear which aircraft Putin was aboard.
After additional maneuvers, two of the planes managed to land at Vnukovo Airport, according to Flightradar data. [...]
Earlier on October 9, all four Moscow airports—Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky—were closed amid a drone attack. Flights were delayed or diverted to alternate airports.
By 18:45, restrictions at all four airports had been lifted.
🚨 Russia could threaten Starlink operations, Reuters reports.
Russian military satellites are practicing maneuvers that could potentially be used against major commercial satellite constellations, including Starlink, according to Major General Michael Traut, commander of Germany’s Space Command.
In May, four Russian military satellites maneuvered near a commercial satellite operated by Finnish company ICEYE, which provides battlefield reconnaissance imagery to the US and its allies, including Ukraine.
Russia would not necessarily need to shoot down any satellites. A Russian satellite could position itself along Starlink satellites’ orbital paths, forcing them to take evasive action and consume fuel. This could shorten their operational lifespan and degrade connection quality for users.
According to Traut, a direct attack on Starlink would constitute a serious escalation. However, Moscow could also use more covert methods to interfere with the satellite network.
🇬🇧 The UK reaffirms its commitment to supporting Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Russia following the US-Moscow deal on diesel fuel supplies.
