❗️Ukraine could not intercept a single ballistic missile again last night.
Russia launched six Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-400 anti-aircraft guided missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

⛽️❗️ Russia massively attacked Ukrnafta facilities, hitting seven assets involved in oil and gas production in eastern Ukraine, according to Naftogaz Group.
Critical equipment was destroyed, forcing several facilities to shut down and resulting in significant production losses.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ The US and Ukraine are modernizing S-300 systems amid a shortage of Patriot missiles, according to PBS.
As Patriot stocks dwindle, the US can no longer transfer as many interceptors to Ukraine as it once could. According to former US Army Colonel Robert Hamilton, a joint project to modernize older missiles for the S-300 could help fill the gap.
The upgraded system is expected to become operational by the end of the year. However, production is currently expected to reach only 100–200 missiles annually.
The US currently produces around 600 Patriot interceptors per year and does not expect to significantly increase production until 2029. The shortage is therefore likely to persist until then.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ U.S. intelligence believes the drone found at Leipzig Airport this week was linked to Russia, according to The Wall Street Journal.
According to U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence, the explosive-laden drone most likely belonged to Moscow.
The assessment of possible Russian involvement came amid a U.S. intelligence report that Putin intends to test NATO’s resolve with a limited attack on a NATO ally in the next few years.
German authorities, who are leading the investigation, have not yet named Russia as a possible culprit. However, Western security officials have said they suspect Moscow of involvement in a number of recent attempts to target European infrastructure.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ Two suspicious drones were spotted over a military base in Mechernich, southwest of Bonn, on the night of August 7, according to Deutsche Welle.
Base security spotted the drones, prompting officers from the Euskirchen district police to arrive at the scene. Police recorded six drone flights over the base, with one of the drones making several circles above the officers.
According to Deutsche Welle, the Mechernich base is a key logistics facility for Germany. A secure underground facility located 130 meters below ground houses a logistics warehouse where equipment and spare parts for military hardware are stored.
The base also houses Bundeswehr specialists responsible for maintaining and repairing US Patriot air defense systems.

⛽️ Amid a fuel shortage, Russia has begun importing jet fuel and diesel from South Korea for the first time in four years, according to Reuters.
Analytical firms Kpler and Vortexa tracked two tankers that loaded fuel from storage tanks at the South Korean port of Ulsan in late July and headed toward Russia’s Far East.
According to Kpler, one of the vessels has already arrived in Russia but has not yet completed unloading.
In total, nearly 30,000 metric tons of petroleum products were shipped.
The previous delivery from Northeast Asia to Russia took place in February 2022, when a shipment of jet fuel came from Yeosu, South Korea.
Last month, Russia was also expected to receive 200,000 barrels of jet fuel from Japan through traders. The fuel was reportedly to be delivered via South Korea, but Tokyo blocked the shipment.

Former Defense Minister Fedorov's team has developed a plan for changes to the mobilization process, which includes phased mobilization of a certain number of people and the possibility for others to work for the economy instead of being wanted, he said.
According to Fedorov, his team detailed this plan, which involves launching 10–15 projects.
"We have a full document describing all the stages of this process. It requires legislative changes, it requires regulatory acts. I think the new team β€” or the old-new team β€” will be able to present it publicly, and then the discussion of this process will begin. But it is very important: before launching it, it must be discussed with society," he added.
At the same time, Fedorov noted that he would not disclose all the details of the plan to avoid "spoiling it" and to not be seen as someone who "hasn't launched it yet but is now teaching others how to live."

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊThe European Union has imposed new sanctions against Russia in response to the recent series of strikes on Ukraine.
Five Russian citizens have been sanctioned β€” heads of defense and military technology enterprises involved in the development, production, or supply of equipment for the Russian army.
Among those on the new list are the CEO of the "Metallist" plant, which produces components for Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and the head of the Krasnoyarsk Machine-Building Plant, which manufactures the RS-28 Sarmat missile system, among other things.
Three others on the new sanctions list lead companies that produce military communication systems and develop software for drones and space military technologies. All of them will now lose access to their assets in the EU and will be barred from entering EU countries.

US intelligence warns that Putin may attempt to test NATO's resolve by launching a limited strike on one of the Alliance's member states within the next few years β€” WSJ.
Intelligence reports outline various possible scenarios for aggressive actions β€” from cyberattacks to a small-scale ground incursion.
These assessments come amid a shortage of critical ammunition in the US, which would be needed to confront Russia or China in a potential conflict.
US stockpiles of these weapons have been significantly depleted due to supplies to Ukraine and the conflict with Iran.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦EU countries want to see Ukraine in the bloc, but they are concerned about the level of corruption in the country and the independence of the judiciary, the FT reports, citing a senior EU official.
This contradiction has led the EU to consider a new approach to enlargement that would align with current political realities.
According to the EU official, Ukraine's position on joining by January 1, 2027, was a "cry for help." He believes President Volodymyr Zelensky knew it was impossible, but it was a signal that the usual enlargement agenda was insufficient. In his view, Ukraine has shown just how unprepared the bloc is to accept new members.

Russia attacked the Chornomorets stadium in the center of Odesa, the regional military administration reported.
According to Oleh Kiper, the stadium's roof, glazing, and stands were damaged in the strike.

Preliminary reports indicate one person was injured. Information on the aftermath is being clarified.

Meanwhile, UAVs and unmanned boats attacked temporarily occupied Yalta.
A fire broke out in the city, likely as a result of the strikes.

In Russia, the Syzran Oil Refinery in the Samara region was hit.
Its capacity is approximately 8.9 million tons of oil per year. The plant also produces motor and marine fuel.
The Ilsky Oil Refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai was also hit. Its capacity is about 6.6 million tons of oil per year. The plant produces gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, and other petroleum products.
The attack caused fires at both refineries.

Overnight, the Russians attacked Kyiv and the region β€” there are dead and wounded. Here is what is known:
πŸ”΅Kyiv region. In the village of Pukhivka, Brovary district, three people were killed in an attack, including a child. Three others were injured. The attack destroyed a house, gazebos, and two cars. Fires broke out after the strike β€” including a warehouse that caught fire.

πŸ”΅Chernihiv region. A drone strike caused a warehouse fire, which was extinguished.

The Russians struck a bus in Nikopol β€” the driver was killed, and his colleague was injured.
The bus burned down as a result of the strike.

Russian fuel standards are notoriously low to begin with. The higher quality products are sold as exports to earn hard currency.

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2026 23:52

Oh interesting.

I wonder if the Russian elite are affected? Do they tend to own Mercedes?

Mercs are very popular in Africa, first among the elite and then nth-hand among taxi-drivers, because they're so reliable and run sweetly in challenging conditions – including running on a mix of petrol and cooking paraffin. Paraffin tends to be taxed lower because it's a necessity even for the poorest folk.

PerkingFaintly · 08/08/2026 23:53

Mind you I'm talking about <cough> years back. I don't know about recent models of Mercedes or modern Chinese cars.

PerkingFaintly · 09/08/2026 00:04

And come to think of it, it was lighting paraffin, not cooking paraffin.

I'm not sure if there's a difference... but if there is, I'm confident some people on this thread will know every detail.Grin

(I only know the practical side: you can cook on wood, but lamps need paraffin.)

understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-august-7-2026/

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly had a phone call on August 6 with the commander of a Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) division, indicating that Russian forces are prioritizing advances in the Pokrovsk and Dobropillya directions with the intent of encircling Ukraine’s Fortress Belt from the southwest.
  2. The Russian timelines for the completion of this wide envelopment are extremely unrealistic, however.
  3. Putin’s call with the 76th Guards VDV Division commander is likely also a response to emerging accusations that he is out of touch with the battlefield reality in Ukraine.
  4. Ukraine’s intermediate-range strike campaign against the Russian rear, along with Ukrainian tactical drone overmatch on the frontline, are slowing down Russian operational tempo across the frontline.
  5. An improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in central Moscow City on August 1 reportedly killed Russian Major General Valery Plokhotnyuk.
  6. The US Senate passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026, which imposes 100% tariffs on US imports from the five largest importers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, among other provisions, on August 7.
  7. Russian forces recently advanced in the Novopavlivka and Oleksandrivka directions.
  8. Russia launched 147 drones against Ukraine overnight.

Turkey's Directorate General of Coastal Safety informed several vessels heading to Novorossiysk that it is not currently issuing passage permits through the Dardanelles or requires more time to process applications.
Some vessels were told that delays also apply to ships heading to Ukraine. Turkish authorities have not officially explained the reasons for the decision.
At the same time, the restrictions do not appear to apply to vessels heading to Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, or Turkey β€” they continued to pass north through the Dardanelles on Saturday.
β–ͺ️Earlier this week, Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Turkish citizens had been affected by drone attacks on two Turkish vessels.

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian forces continue experimenting with new technological innovations to restore mechanized maneuver at the tactical level and break out of positional warfare.
  2. The Arena-M system alone is currently insufficient to protect Russian mechanized assaults from Ukrainian drones, let alone all of the other weapons that Ukrainian forces use to create the kill zone.
  3. Russian forces will likely continue efforts to restore maneuver despite the failure of the late July 2026 Dobropillya mechanized assault.
  4. Russian forces continued to heavily target Odesa Oblast on the night of August 8 to 9.
  5. Russian forces struck the Mayaki bridge on the M-15 Odesa City-Reni highway connecting southern Ukraine to Moldova and Romania on August 9.
  6. Russian forces likely targeted the Mayaki bridge to disrupt Ukrainian grain and other exports via the alternative land corridor that Ukraine has been using since Russian strikes disrupted Ukrainian maritime exports.
  7. Russia is reportedly preparing to receive as many as 50,000 North Korean troops.
  8. Ukrainian forces continued their long-range suppression and destruction of enemy air defenses (SEAS / DEAD) campaign against air defense assets in Russia.
  9. Russia launched 202 drones and 17 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic, Onyx anti-ship, and Kh-31P anti-radar missiles against Ukraine overnight.
  10. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Kupyansk and Borova directions.

According to some sources (e.g. BBC) Russia authorities are planning to relax the rules on the freezing point for jet fuel used on domestic flights.

That could have interesting consequences this winter if quality control isn't done properly and/or any new

If I was Russian I would not get on a Russian plane! Was worried for DD's friend who is Russian (Jehova's Witnesses that had to claim asylum in Finland) as she and her mum went to visit family in Russia in the summer and had to take an internal flight. Hard not to see family for years but its not a choice I would make.

United 24 Media:

❗️”Even wars have rules. One of them is that health must be protected. Attacks on health facilities MUST STOP. Otherwise, people will be left without life-saving medical care,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said following the Russian strike on the organization’s warehouse in Dnipro.

β€œLast Friday, a humanitarian warehouse in Dnipro, Ukraine, was hit and destroyed. No casualties have been reported so far.

Earlier that day, a WHO staff member and drivers were on site helping to evacuate the cargo. The team managed to evacuate 130 of approximately 300 pallets and left the area before the attack began.

The warehouse was storing humanitarian medical supplies intended for frontline health facilities, mostly WHO supplies for emergency medical care.”

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ β€œThe Russian war will be increasingly felt at home, in Russia. There are completely fair answers, and there will be our response to every Russian strike,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address.

β€œI thank the Armed Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine today. The operation against the Russian oil refinery continues, and this is very tangible for them. There were also strikes on Russian air defense systems and radars, as well as our responses to Russian infrastructure in the Azov and Black Sea regions.

The only reason why this is still going on is Russia’s reluctance to end this war.

This week, we will have new contacts with mediators, focusing on the steps and proposals that are necessary.

Ukraine is always active in diplomacy. There will be new contacts to secure air defense packages to protect our state and our people.”

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ Saab plans to double Gripen production

The company plans to double annual Gripen fighter production from 15 to 30 aircraft, citing a significant increase in demand. This includes a potential long-term order from Ukraine for up to 100 fighters, as well as the needs of Sweden, Brazil, Hungary, and Colombia.

The current production cycle for one fighter is 24 days, allowing Saab to produce 15 Gripens per year. The company plans to reduce this to at least 14 days by expanding production capacity, finding additional suppliers, and hiring more employees.

However, the issue of engines will also need to be resolved. Gripen fighters are powered by American-made General Electric engines, and the U.S. could potentially restrict their export.

πŸ•― Two people were killed and 10 more were injured in the Sumy region as a result of Russian shelling, according to the National Police.

πŸ”Ά Russia is exceeding production plans for its main types of missiles β€” HUR representative Vadym Skibitskyi told RBK-Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, Russia launched 153 Kh-101, Kalibr, and Kh-32 cruise missiles in July β€” the second-highest monthly figure this year after February, when 157 were launched.

Russia also launched 198 ballistic and hypersonic missiles in July, including 9M723 missiles from the Iskander-M system, missiles from the S-400, and Zircon missiles. This was the highest monthly figure recorded this year.

β€œAccording to military intelligence, the use of Russian missile weapons began increasing in April. There were 61 ballistic missiles in April, 107 in May, and 134 in June,” Skibitskyi said.

He added that Ukrainian intelligence has documentary evidence showing Russia is exceeding its missile production plans.

As of August 3, Russia had already fulfilled its annual production targets for Zircon and Oniks missiles, producing 33 Zircons and 60 Oniks missiles in the first seven months of the year.

Overall, Russia is currently fulfilling its monthly production plans for its main missile types at 110–120%, according to HUR.

In July, Russia produced 140% of its planned Kh-101 missiles, 111% of its planned Kalibr missiles, and 200% of its planned Kh-35 missiles.

For August, Russia’s production targets are 72 Kh-101 missiles and 26 Kalibr missiles. In July, it exceeded both targets, producing 87 Kh-101s and 29 Kalibrs.

β€œRussia is focusing on the production of certain weapons and redistributing funds toward them. We have seen this trend since approximately the second quarter of this year,” Skibitskyi said.
