How much exercise do you do each week, and why?

Bit of a debate with a friend about how much the average person exercises so I was wondering if you were being totally honest how much do you excercise? Not just the gym but any sport, class, hiking etc.

And also why? As in why do you/don’t you?

Mid 50s. Do 4 x morning gym sessions a week & (60-90 mins) and 4 x exercise classes a week. Mixture of weights, circuits, cardio, pilates, mobility & functional etc.

Also usually do a decent walk on a weekend too. I love exercise now, didn't always, and I love what my body can do - I particularly love weights Star

Ilike looking & feeling fit, that I can eat more & wear what I like. I also love knowing that I'm setting myself up well for older age.

I competed in sports at a high level until my early 20s so it’s very ingrained in me to exercise quite a lot. Plus, I go completely mad if I can’t do it.

I’m now 38, work full time over four days and have three kids aged 5 and under so that makes things a bit tricky. I try and build things into my day and involve the kids where necessary. I walk everywhere because I don’t drive so I get a lot of steps in. I’ll run a 5km on the way home from work twice a week. At the weekends, I’ll run whilst the older kids cycle, or husband and I will take them to the park and take it in turns to run. We are really lucky to have space for a peloton and gym equipment at home so I use that most days. Plus a reformer pilates class once a week.

I need to add more strength training but that’s harder to slot in alongside family life. I’m hoping it will get easier as the kids get older.

Im super shocked by how much everyone exercises. Is this really the norm? Is everyone super buff??

I do none at all. I rarely do more than 1000 steps in a day. I like the idea of exercise, sometimes I think I'll just do ten minutes when I wake up and ten minutes before bed each day to tone up but I'm always too busy and exhausted with work and the kids. I'm not overweight, I don't eat particularly healthily but I don't eat a lot and am lucky to not often feel very hungry. I like to swim but rarely get the chance. I joined a gym but didn't go. Maybe I'm lazy but I just never seem to have time, energy or motivation.

Oh, and swimming too!

Weights twice a week and run three times a week. I do it because I enjoy it and it’s good for my physical and mental health. I get agitated really easily when I haven’t been able to exercise.

Greenwriter76 · Yesterday 21:32

I’m 49 and I do a 10 minute weights workout roughly twice a week, walk an average of 7000 steps a day, recently started jogging 25 mins once a week again, though I have a damaged knee from a fall, and I do 5 mins of yoga or a stretch routine at the beginning or end of most days. I mix it up with whatever different exercise opportunities / routines come my way.and am also mum to a 7 year old who keeps me on my toes!

Exercise improves my physical and mental health and I’m experience some joint pain etc in peri, which exercise helps - I want to stay strong and healthy for as long as possible!

2 x aqua fit (followed by 20 lengths) per week. Gym for weights/treadmill on a Sunday morning and 90 mins Line Dancing every Thursday.

FortyFacedFuckers · Yesterday 21:34

run/jog 4X 30 minutes per week
weights 3 X a week 45 minutes
1 strength & conditioning class per week 45 minutes
usually a walk of between 1-2 hours once per week

SadiraOfTyr · Yesterday 21:36

Cycle on average 150km per week which is about 6.5 hours actual riding time but more once you include cafe stops and pre/post ride faff. Usually 1-2 longer rides and several shorter rides, some of which might be on the indoor trainer if I am time limited or the weather is particularly dire. Try to do a bit of yoga/stretching and walking on my rest day.

Do it because I enjoy it. It’s also my main social activity as I mostly ride with my club.

Shamesame · Yesterday 21:38

i have a full on full time office job and solo parent a toddler 70% of the time.

I always do 10,000 steps a day and run a minimum of 20km a week, either with the buggy or if I’m working at home and toddler is at nursery.

I have to force myself to start with. I reckon it takes a few weeks to build the habit. Even though I love running this week, I’ve actually had to really push myself. The other day I had my running stuff on for an hour and in the end told myself I was being ridiculous and just went!

It gets easier the more you do it. It’s so important to be mobile and as fit as possible.

EveryDayisFriday · Yesterday 21:41

Gym: weights and cardio, 45mins 5x a week.
Dog walk 30mins every day.

My fitness levels have been improving since I put the effort in 3yrs ago, before that I was so unfit, wfh and barely did more than 2k steps a day. Currently stronger, slimmer and healthier than I have ever been.

Helpwithdivorce · Yesterday 21:41

3 runs
2 weights
1 Pilates
1 hyrox class

Greycheck · Yesterday 21:42

Wow everyone does so much. I don't do any but I know I should. No reason other than I am lazy and hate it and would much rather spend my time doing other things. The thought of it takes me right back to high school PE which I think has traumatised me for life!

That’s because only people who
do exercise will bother to contribute to the thread. Just like if you post a thread saying ‘What’s your favourite Beatles album’ you will only get responses from people who like the Beatles in the first place.

Saz12 · Yesterday 21:44

Not enough!

I find being unfit hugely embarassing, so I avoid being out of breath around others. I just feel people judge my fitness and think am lazy and rubbish. I look athletic, am low-end of healthy bmi. I spend most days on my feet (work outside, not an office job), walk 5 miles to work 3 days (bus home, drive on other days). So active rather than exercise.

Papster · Yesterday 21:46

I thought I did a lot
Swim 3 times a week
1-2 sessions of weights pw
A stretch daily
Having read this thread I clearly need to up my game

orangehandles · Yesterday 21:46

I have never set foot inside a gym in my entire life and I intend to keep it that way.

These days it is mostly just walking, and an adult ballet class once a week. Currently got a dodgy ankle so not doing all that much at the moment.

Stoflinewer · Yesterday 21:48

Mid 50s
3 runs a week making up about 15-20km , probably a walk at the weekend , always used to do 10000 steps a day but less so now I’m not walking the school run

Know I need to do some strength training but if I’m honest the idea of it just bores me .

I run to get outside into the countryside , to think on my own and so I can have the chocolate mini roll I’ve just eaten

SowWhatNow · Yesterday 21:49

Zumba kids YouTube with the kids (to tackle the "but can we watch TV?" Yes!) once ir twice a week for 30mins ish each time.

1hr of pilates (time to myself)

1.5-2hrs gardening (clearing a recently acquired overgrown wild allotment plot, dismantling sheds and fighting brambles etc etc)

Swimming (parent has to be in the pool for 30min lesson and we stay for a splash and play about after)

Walking to and from nursery/park/playgroups/classes/everywhere whilst laden woth buggy, potty, 2 scooters, changing bag etc etc. Quite exhausting in itself.

I get in whatever I can around my childcare responsibilities.

Pre-children I used to do weekly: step-class, bounce fit class, pilates and swim twice a week 40 lengths a time. Ahh those days!

MoshpitAtMorrisons · Yesterday 21:49

Well slap my arse and call me Sally this thread really has cemented my thoughts, I am a lazy cow.

Deadly serious question - how do you all find the time and energy for this? And obviously the classes sound great but they are costly in the southeast (at least the ones I’ve seen).

petitpasta · Yesterday 21:49

Anywhere between 5 and 10 classes a week atthe moment so around 6 hours or so. This week I have booked to do:

Small group personal training x3
Yoga x 1
Cardio class x 1
Pilates class x2
Boot camp x1
Circuit class x1

I'm a member of two gyms

OrangeFlower14 · Yesterday 21:50

@LongDistanceClara44 you've got kids I guarantee you're doing more than 1000 steps in a day. How did you count that?

i do 3x all round classes doesn't feel like enough looking at this I like it. I do it because I like it.
