How much exercise do you do each week, and why?

Bit of a debate with a friend about how much the average person exercises so I was wondering if you were being totally honest how much do you excercise? Not just the gym but any sport, class, hiking etc.

And also why? As in why do you/don’t you?

5/6 days out of 7 I hit the gym. Alternate between cardio and heavy weights.
walk the dog every night. Sometimes a longer walk on the weekend.

Dozer · Yesterday 20:12

Variable.

Mental and physical health and don’t want to be fatter than already am!

WhatAMarvelousTune · Yesterday 20:14

40 min walk every weekday lunch
30 min run every other day
3 weights classes a week at the gym

Generally out walking as a family at the weekend but not all the time, as it depends what’s going on with the DC.

I run 5-7km two or three times a week plus a Pilates class.

The reason I don't do more is lack of time - I work full time and have teenage kids.

Cismyfatarse · Yesterday 20:15

7 Reformer Pilates sessions a week. Plus some walking. But not as much as I should. My job (teacher) can be fairly active but moving around desks, not teaching PE! 58 and am very lean and strong from the Pilates. Should do more cardio but struggle during term time beyond some walking.

Walk the dog every day for 35-40 minutes. But he's old so it's a slow walk. Run 3 -4 times a week (usually about 5k on average) and do a short hiit workout on the non running days.

I do it because I feel better for doing it and it does help to maintain weight loss. Should probably do a bit more but honestly I'm knackered most of the time at the moment 😄

I do two strength and cardio sessions at the gym every week and walk my dogs everyday heat allowing . I’m of an age now where I’ve enjoyed a healthy pain free life with full mobility and want to keep it that way . I was out recently and there was a lady of no more than 60 clinging onto her daughter ( I assumed) for every slow step and she couldn’t even hold her own shopping basket . I am reminded of that if I don’t want to go to the gym .

RedFatball · Yesterday 20:18

Swim twice a week, run three times a week, 3 weights sessions at home on an app per week. Plus often my Saturday is a long hike, up to 20km.

because I'm using weight loss jabs and I made a commitment to change my lifestyle at the same time so when I have to stop using them I know how to keep the weight off. Before that I did almost no exercise. I feel a million times better than I did

Doyouthinktheyknow · Yesterday 20:18

Gym, I aim for 3 sessions a week of strength training lasting 1 hour and a quarter to 1.5 hours.
Walking, I aim to average 50 miles a week but this is not the same every day. Just done a 50km downs walk so been training for that and the gym took a back seat but still went twice every week.

i exercise because i feel and look better, it helps my sore knees and it helps keep my weight down. I’ve lost a lot of weight and I find I'm eating too much.

Early 2025...

4 hours of running a week
5 hours of walking a week
3 hours of gym
22 hours a week on my feet at work

It wasn't sustainable, I ended up taking a break from running due to niggles that I couldn't get to the bottom of.

I was running because I was training for a marathon, strength training to support that as well as building muscle. The walk was the school run which I do because it's good for me to get some exercise and fresh air. Also trying to keep the weight down.

Then I sprained my ankle so up until earlier this year it was work and nothing else. I've gained a lot of weight and am now trying to build everything back up. The gym is sporadic, running is also sporadic because I've had a lot of bad luck with health issues recently and now it's the school holidays I'm doing less walking.

The only thing that has remained consistent is work but I don't have a desk job so I can't opt out.

I'm really struggling with the motivation to diet and exercise but I keep trying because I need to shift this weight. I am now officially overweight and the heaviest I've ever been.

I want to keep running not only for weight loss but because for the most part I find it enjoyable. I strength train because I want to be strong and it also helps me with running.

I just have to keep trying to find that fire I had!

2* 45 mins atrength training classes
3* half hour runs
1* active class I won’t name as its outing.
Try to do half walk brisk walk on days I don’t run but often can’t fit it in.

I WFH and was more active when I had an office job with an active commute. Then I cycled for about an hour a day ( hill climb each way too!), plus half hour brisk walk at lunch ( at least) plus more steps walking around the building snd I used to do 15 mins mid afternoon in the changing rooms of jumping and stretching to wake myself up! Plus cycling was my transport wi if I went out of n evenings, I would cycle there too.

like pp said, now I work from home if I am not doing the forma exercise I listed, I am sitting on my arse. I really need to get active mini breaks in during the day but never seem to manage it.

8,000 steps a day walking
two short weights sessions per week
swimming once a week
I am aiming to improve my health and wellness and to become more fit as I age and not less fit

Archymum · Yesterday 20:25

I run 3-4 days a week, anywhere between 5-15k each run. I usually take a spin class once a week. I lift about twice a week. One of those runs is usually with a friend, which I like. I also have a very physical job and get around 20k steps per day. I do it because it improves my physical and mental health, and I like it.

OnARainyDay2012 · Yesterday 20:26

Walk the dog every morning for 30mins-1hr. Lunchtime swim 2-3x per week. Bootcamp 1-2x per week. Long bike ride once every couple of weeks. I'm trying to focus on being healthy and strong but really I want to be thinner. I'm at the high end of a healthy bmi (because I eat too many carbs!)

Lastqueenofscotland2 · Yesterday 20:27

Run every day.
At least one strength session a week (which I hate)

As for the why I adore running, strength session is to help with mobility/injury prevention for the running

Passthecake30 · Yesterday 20:28

I do 5 x 1hour classes a week, combination of cardio/weights. And 10k walking a day. I do this as I wfh and otherwise sit on my backside all day. It gets me out to meet local people, I’ve made a lot of friends I wouldn’t have ever met otherwise.

pepayfelix · Yesterday 20:28

3 x 35 minute strength training sessions plus 10k steps a day most days. I am disciplined about it because I feel a million times better, physically and mentally, when I do it.

FoxRedPuppy · Yesterday 20:29

I run 5k three times a week and do strength training with weights 3 times a week. And I walk the dog every day about 3 miles total, sometimes more. Twice a morning we go away and I do 5 - 8 mile walk on the Saturday.

Running I do as I love it, it really helps my mental health, strength training to maintain my muscle as I age, and I like being strong! And I love being outside so that’s why I hike.

buymeaboaanddrivemetoreno · Yesterday 20:30

At least 7 hours per week - minimum 30mins waking dog everyday (usually more) then do 4 x 30 minute workouts.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · Yesterday 20:30

Dog walk an hour a day, Pilates class once a week.

I do a fair bit of gardening, not sure if that counts.

I don’t have the time or energy to do much more tbh.

MrsF111 · Yesterday 20:30

Not as much as I would like! I have a toddler and baby and exercise has fallen by the wayside. I try my best to do 2 weights sessions on a Saturday and Sunday and I’m starting riding again in 2 weeks but other than that it’s walks at toddler pace ( although I guess I’m on my feet a lot and often carrying a chunky baby!

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 20:30

18 hours a week cause it’s my job.

If it wasn’t my job, I’d still be doing quite a lot because I just don’t do well with sitting still.

smilesy · Yesterday 20:33

I do 8 classes a week 45-55 minutes each. A mixture of dance based cardio, yoga and Pilates. I do it because I want to maintain my fitness in to older age and I really enjoy it because I have made a lot of friends and the exercises are fun. I feel stronger and more flexible

Culpeper · Yesterday 20:33

I do a mixture. I run 3 or 4 days (only 5km on treadmill at the gym on an incline). I have a pt session where I do strength training, I do at least 2 spin classes and one yoga.

I walk the dogs and go out in my bike, but don’t tend to count that.

Bedingfield1 · Yesterday 20:35

I do Clubbercise, and two dance classes each week. I’ve tried adding walking on the days I don’t.
