BIL using our bedroom for intimate purposes

We arrived home from holiday last night. BIL has kindly been cat-sitting for us, popping in twice a day, but not sleeping here overnight. This is important.

This afternoon, I've been sorting out a few things in our room. The sun was shining in, and as it hit the mirror I could clearly see strange marks - handprints, quite high up, and what I think is a willy mark at hip height. They are quite noticeable, so I'm sure they weren't here before we went away.

I suspect BIL has been entertaining himself in our bedroom, either alone or with a partner. He's single and the thought of him bringing a hook-up into our bedroom makes me feel ill.

I've changed the sheets (just in case his activities culminated in our bed), but I don't know if I can bear the thought of him cat-sitting for us again if he does this. But DH will think it's strange if we don't have him back, and DCat has never been to a cattery.

Is there a way I can subtley dissuade him from using our home in this way, without offending him?

I've added photos, but they aren't very good because my phone doesn't seem to focus on the mirror surface.

Yeah I don't suggest you tell your husband you saw some smears on your mirror and started picturing his brother's naked body thrusting against the mirror.

Edited

Yeah, could start a tricky conversation.

Thanks for your help everyone! I won't mention it to DH or BIL (sorry!) and will continue to ask BIL to cat sit, but I will:

  • install a lock on our bedroom door
  • install a kitty cam on the stairs and point it out to BIL

Why would you lock the bedroom door?
Is it the only room with a mirror?
The only room with a bed? 🤔

I find it odd that you wouldn’t mention it to your DH.

If I found Willy marks on my mirror and I thought his brother had been the one to have caused them my DH would be the first one I’d tell.

Why are you nervous/scared of your DH’s reaction?

What are these “ramifications” that you think you need to avoid by keeping quiet?

It's not that I'm nervous or scared, but just that it would then mean that he'd have to ask his brother, and it would be awkward and uncomfortable conversation - and with little to be gained. If BIL was doing something weird against the mirror, he's unlikely to admit it and if he wasn't and the marks are indeed just cleaning from cleaning, he'll be offended that we thought such a thing. So it's a lose-lose situation, and he probably wouldn't cat sit for us any more. We see quite a lot of BIL and I don't want to rock the boat.

It's the only room with a full-length mirror and a double bed! The DC's rooms have beds too, of course, but he wouldn't use their rooms...would he? 😱I really don't think he would!

Ok. I think you're going to have to alarm every surface, be it mirrored or cushioned.
It's the only reasonable response.

WhatTheMirrorSaw · 04/08/2026 10:15

Er, no....I think you must be looking at a hand print.

The willy one is the long thick smudge.

“A long thick smudge”?

so you’re envisaging him rubbing himself (with his willy pointing down) over your mirror? To create this long thick smudge.

ffs OP you’ve quite the imagination don’t you?

Exactly, if you find the cat anywhere near a bucket call the police.

I can't quite imagine, but I think he must have been leaning against the mirror with no underwear on, and his arms stretched up, palms pressed against the mirror. But why?

I think you are doing g a lot of imagining!!

MargoLeadbetterisQueen · 04/08/2026 07:45

Me too, @Ayarreet
@LadyBeatriceBeaHiggins, why did you post all that?

trying to offer the sherlock holmes style that and i watched an eposide of csi last night and wanted a full analysis of the marks on the mirror

ChiliFiend · 04/08/2026 12:48

I appreciate this is slightly beside the point, but anyone who has pet or house sitters should get a Ring doorbell (or equivalent). It's brought me some peace of mind.

If it's a hookup with another man then that's exactly what it would look like.

What does M, C and A mean? Perhaps I shouldn't ask!

BIL is 38. He lives near us. It is a new town for him, but not a new country, and the culture is the same as where he and DH grew up!

Sorry, I was trying to be obvious but I clearly failed! Might he be training for some kind of grubby erotic Village People tribute act?!

If you need BIL's pet sitting services again, I'd be tempted to make some reference to cameras etc. This may hit home (or not, depending on what really happened) but at least this should ensure there are no further marks on the mirror when you get back .....

Is that ChatGPT's explanation of where the marks came from? It's very interesting but isn't AI just trained on what's already floating around on the Internet? Maybe there just aren't many willy marks on mirrors for it to be trained on?

id research what ai's are trained on they already have been trained on forensic books, various forensic manuals, all which would be used to teach people so they can figure out what the marks would be eg an ep yesterday of csi where they analysised the broken glass fraqments and patterns to know etc

Yes, this goes waaaaaay beyond merely awkward, if OP's suspicions are correct.

"Did you open my box of posh chocolates that were on the side and scoff the lot yourself?"
"Did you buy a premium blockbuster film and charge it to our YouTube account?"
"Did you borrow our car without asking and take it to do your weekly shop?"

........."Did you take all your clothes off in our bedroom, make sweaty love to our mirror, smooshing your slimy willy and goolies against it whilst in the throes of passion, and leave a human slug trail all across the surface?"

And the worst of it will be the look on BIL and DH's faces directed at the Op when BIL inevitably looks perplexed and says "No?"

There won't really be anywhere dignified for you to go from there OP!

I am afraid the evidence is simply not sufficiently incriminating that this will be the gotcha moment you are hoping for. It will look a like a brain fart of your deepest fanatsies.

Does AI have a dedicated MN branch, where it 'learns' from MN Classics and then regurgitates it in new threads - like a great big inbred MN ourobouros?!

Even if it's all 100% what actually happened, it will still be very 'kicking Bishop Brennan up the arse', when the truth is just so unbelievable, nobody ever would.
