Who is your favourite fictional mother figure?

Something I’ve been working on in therapy for a long time is what makes a good (enough) mother. And I’ve realised I don’t have any real life role models of good mothers (aunts and uncles on one side of the family are childless, and on the other side are estranged), so I’m looking to fiction for some help!

Who would you say is the best/your favourite fictional mother figure?

OP posts:

Molly Weasley in Harry Potter. Motherly enough to care for another child despite her own brood. Kind, humorous and prepared to fight to the death when it came to it.

And sorry you don't have any real life examples. Motherly figures don't actually have to have children or be related to you. I hope you find one.

Marmie from Little Women.

Mrs Bennett. She gets a lot of flack for being a bit dramatic but ultimately the fate of the family rested on her shoulders and she did far more than her useless dh to get it sorted.

I liked the mother that Marilla Cuthbert became, in AoGG. 🥰 That was a beautiful arc.

I liked Leo’s mother in The Go-Between even though she only had a small role.

I was thinking of Marilla too. And Anne herself, in the later books.

The mum in the queens gambit

Ma Larkin in the Darling Buds of May. Warm, funny, excellent cook and adored her family

I was going to say Marilla! And another accidental parent - Taylor Greer in Barbara Kingsolver’s book Pigs in Heaven.

I wouldn’t nominate Anne or Marmie myself, too unrealistically saintly for me. I can’t help feeling that Anne can be elegant and saintly and understanding because she has Susan Baker doing all the grunt work.

Disagree. I loved how Mr B had Lizzie’s back when it came to Collins. Mrs B was too panicky and desperate, Mr B had faith in his daughters and wasn’t constantly pressuring them.

The Mum in the Tiger Who Came to Tea. That amazing story she made up to explain to Daddy why the house was a tip and all the beer was gone. Genuis.

I really love Miranda Bailey from Grey's Anatomy.
She's fierce and not someone to be on the wrong side of but there's a really gentle nurturing side to her also.

Forrest Gump's mum. She was both protective of him and ambitious for him, she always built up his confidence. My favourite is when Forrest asks her why he was different from all the other kids, and she says if God wanted everyone to be the same then all the boys would have leg braces like him.

Lorelai Gilmore! I feel like it will be pretty controversial here but what I want from a mother/teen daughter relationship for the most part, she’s obviously not perfect but none of us are.
