My DS is desperate for the new swatch watch that David Cason has launched but you can only buy them in person in New York, I was all happy on the website going to buy it for a super early Christmas gift and then saw you can only buy them in person in NY.

bugger.

Otherwise I’m cashing in my airmiles and taking a trip in a few weeks.

Quite the tale. Someone in Sheffield wanted an M&S handbag but they were selling out. A poster went to the Sheffield store, said it was in stock and messaged the OP. She went and bought it.
In the meantime, she'd asked others to look out for it and a woman in Aberdeen bought it for her, ready to post. She was cross.

That’s quite the anticlimax.

Sinkysocks · 30/07/2026 22:21

@rivalsbingeI’ll be there on the 6th and 7th. I think there’s a store right in Times Square that’s easy for me to pop into. If the other lady who lives near Manhattan can’t get it first I can go then. You can either meet me somewhere in Oxfordshire or I can post it to you from the UK once I fly back. Feel free to DM me.

Whatyoutalkingabouteh · 30/07/2026 22:36

There are some real miserable people about jeeez. OP is willing to pay upfront- not forcing anyone to do it. Some people are actually kind and willing to help others. If OP doesn’t ask she will never know! Nothing to lose! (Ok maybe £90 😂 ) fingers crossed for you!!

It’s really not that big an ask for someone to pop into a shop and pick up a watch then pop it in the post once home. Things like this used to be done on Mumsnet a lot frequently years ago. I once muled back ranch dressing alongside various other sweets for pregnant American.

Friendlygingercat · 31/07/2026 03:41

I got a package arriving from Shipito tomorrow via DHL. Contains the amalgamation of 4 parcels from different venues and I paid $75 shipping.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 31/07/2026 03:55

Two posters offering to buy and post a watch to a random person and she hasn’t said thank you to either of them. Astounded by the rudeness.

So it ended absolutely fine then.

Hilarious how many posters are wound right up by this thread.

I know! It got a bit bonkers. The Aberdeen woman started her own thread about how cross she was! It all got very silly.

It became a saga, though!

To anyone offering to buy this for op please bear in mind you will probably have to queue for several hours before the shop opens if it’s anything like a recent Manchester Swatch launch.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 31/07/2026 06:50

Those people however, were looking to
purchase one of Swatch’s Royal Pop (crossover with Audemars Piquet) swatch purely for reselling. It was v badly handled by swatch. The type of watch the op is looking at for her son will not entail that level of demand and will be available in store to buy.

JKRowlingFTW · 30/07/2026 03:16

Be careful everyone. This person may be a scammer or trying to avoid import duties.

The import duties payable are 20p per watch! If op is considering a flight to NY I am going to take a guess and say she can probably afford to pay the 20p. And yes I am aware there are other charges payable on import but the import duties themselves are 20p

If you read the OP posts you will see he is working in France on a yacht.
Working on a yacht entails long hours and hard work if you were not aware.

So he could probably buy it himself, but maybe, just maybe his mum just wanted to buy him something nice.

Do you not do nice things for other people?

StolenCookie · 31/07/2026 08:29

I think a lot of MN posters are such martyrs in life and would never dare ask for anything that they get incensed when they see someone do it and get an ordinary response from others willing to help.

Everyone take a breath and have a cup of tea please!

And OP please update us when you have the watch. I hope it works out!

He could buy a Rolex x 10 if he fancied it!!

It’s not about the money, value etc it’s an aritist he has a signed poster from and he studied design for 3 years, so a limited edition would be special to him.

I actually think some posters are unhinged.

I can’t see it on the thread, it’s completely embarrassing for the poster, what an awful way to go through life with that much hate I feel sorry for them.

Hi op, I wish I was in New York but I’m in rainy Liverpool instead! I really hope you get the watch for your son. I have a 23 year old son who loves watches too and I would absolutely try to do the same thing as you if he was desperate for something.

to those being nasty to you ( not the ones showing concern or caution ) take no bloody notice of them. I try to do nice things for people in life all the time, it’s just who I am. There are good people out there. Good luck with the watch!

That mule must be a good swimmer.
Edited to add: I thought that was a typo for mailed and thought it was funny - but now I see it might have been about smuggling instead, so not as amusing!

Does anyone remember a similar thread about an M & S bag, it didn't end will iirc

I remember that one! Can't quite remember how it all worked out though?! I just remember there was a massive fall out/ it all went tits up 😳😁
I'm always wary about things like this, and it's nice to see that people can be kind, but honestly I do think a lot are completely naive/too trusting on the internet.
I'm not saying OP isn't legit, but how do we know that? It's a massive risk to buy something for £90 to send to some random on the internet and hope they are genuine and that you get the money back.
Not to mention anything else that could go wrong.

Not really - surely that means that the person who went out of her way completely wasted her time and was saddled with a bag she didn't even bloody want?!
I'd probably have been pissed off too, even if I probably hopefully could get it refunded!
