Anyone living in NY that can collect a watch for me and post to the UK!

My DS is desperate for the new swatch watch that David Cason has launched but you can only buy them in person in New York, I was all happy on the website going to buy it for a super early Christmas gift and then saw you can only buy them in person in NY.

bugger.

Otherwise I’m cashing in my airmiles and taking a trip in a few weeks.

Yes of course but that’s a risk that it’s down to the two individuals involved to decide to take- nobody’s forcing anyone to participate. I am sure both parties are aware of the risks, and don’t need someone with no skin in the game patronisingly pointing it out.

I don't think I was patronising to point out a risk. If everyone was aware of these types of risks then online fraud etc would never happen. Clearly some people aren't aware of them.

Many of them will allow/expect you to do your own customs declaration so bear that in mind

With that in mind - I also suppose someone has to be the duty pedant and it might as well be me.

If someone brings the watch into the UK for the OP in return for payment AFAIK/ I think strictly they should declare it on arrival and duty might be charged...(since the goods aren't for the traveller's own use and are not being brought in as a gift.)

I know the reality but any volunteers might need to be prepared.

Why not just buy it from the Swatch UK site?

Because it not for sale on the Uk site if you click the link. It’s just showing you the watch.

That's a really nice idea, op.

If you do end up flying to NY - not the worst option! - have fun. I went for the first time 2 years ago, and it's quite something! I adored it and am desperate to go back. It is big, colourful, noisy and so hectic, and I loved every second.

I’ve added it to my bucket list trips.. but can’t even start to look at going until December 🥲

Quite the tale. Someone in Sheffield wanted an M&S handbag but they were selling out. A poster went to the Sheffield store, said it was in stock and messaged the OP. She went and bought it.
In the meantime, she'd asked others to look out for it and a woman in Aberdeen bought it for her, ready to post. She was cross.

As other PP have pointed out there are mail services who will forward parcels or actually shop for you. I have been using SHIPITO for many years but there are dozens of others. Just do a bit off googling. Many of them will allow/expect you to do your own customs declaration so bear that in mind.

This is not a cheap option for one item but if you buy a lot of stuff from the USA (I do) its worthwhile to set up. You can buy stuff from multiple outlets and have it sent to your "suite" (a shelf in their warehouse) and they will consolidate all the various purchase into one package and courier it over for you.

Many of the US sellers will not post international so this gives you a valid US address for say Ebay or Amazon.

Do they calculate the taxes for you or do you need to do that yourself?

Sadly in this life we can't always get what we want, a good lesson for your son to learn.
Happily, in life we sometimes get what we really want and it is fabulous when that happens!!!
