Anyone living in NY that can collect a watch for me and post to the UK!

My DS is desperate for the new swatch watch that David Cason has launched but you can only buy them in person in New York, I was all happy on the website going to buy it for a super early Christmas gift and then saw you can only buy them in person in NY.

bugger.

Otherwise I’m cashing in my airmiles and taking a trip in a few weeks.

If this is not a scam, then not only should you forward the money for the watch, but you should also forward money for the time and effort involved that a person will have to make to do this.

This will go some way to thank the person.

Have you tried calling up the shop and asking if they will send it? You might get a helpful employee even if it's not available to purchase online.

Surely if it's a limited edition and sought after watch, there will be a queue to buy one? .

I think you need to add that in to your OP.
You can't say that chances are they won't be, as you don't know that.

I'd be mighty pissed if I offered to pick something up for someone, and it turned out I would have to stand in a queue for some hours. Never mind the risk of sending / receiving money from complete strangers.

Your expectations of a total stranger are unreasonble OP.

You are asking someone to (a) trust you with bank transfers/sending money, (b) queue up for a limited edition item and (c) package and post it in the UK.

That’s a massive ask and you seem extremely casual in your chat.

OP has laid out the terms, someone has kindly offered. Fine if you wouldn't do it, you don't have to.

If the OP is willing to risk 100 quid and the kind poster is willing to try then that's between them.

Unless you are offering, then the terms should be between the OP and whoever offers.
I'd do this if I was visiting NY, it's £90, if the OP didn't pay me, I'd sell the watch or keep it. No need to reimburse my time (easy for me to say of course as I am not in NY!)

Except the OP could claim never to receive the 'watch' or claim they received something different of the same postage weight and claim back via their bank. Risky and idiotic for both parties.

If you do end up flying to NY - not the worst option! - have fun. I went for the first time 2 years ago, and it's quite something! I adored it and am desperate to go back. It is big, colourful, noisy and so hectic, and I loved every second.

Following to discover if the watch made it to the OP.

As other PP have pointed out there are mail services who will forward parcels or actually shop for you. I have been using SHIPITO for many years but there are dozens of others. Just do a bit off googling. Many of them will allow/expect you to do your own customs declaration so bear that in mind.

This is not a cheap option for one item but if you buy a lot of stuff from the USA (I do) its worthwhile to set up. You can buy stuff from multiple outlets and have it sent to your "suite" (a shelf in their warehouse) and they will consolidate all the various purchase into one package and courier it over for you.

Many of the US sellers will not post international so this gives you a valid US address for say Ebay or Amazon.

Hope some kind-hearted person will be able to help. This is when the internet can be used for something nice!
If not, who needs an excuse for a weekend away?

I meant purchasing from EBay or similar in US when it hits resell, then have it delivered here.

But it’s a gamble as they may not end up on resale sites

I think you'd be better off hiring someone to do this for you - there must be personal shoppers, etc in NY who do this sort of thing for people. Won't be cheap though so might actually be more affordable to go yourself (or send your son as a gift if you have the miles? The watch is pretty iconic to NY so much nicer if he's been there...)

Yes of course but that’s a risk that it’s down to the two individuals involved to decide to take- nobody’s forcing anyone to participate. I am sure both parties are aware of the risks, and don’t need someone with no skin in the game patronisingly pointing it out.
