How are your summer holidays going?

Not too bad here - my dd is nocturnal and we go to bed at around 3am and wake up for 11

(She is autistic at 7, so this is normal for us when out of school)

Managed to pop out today, for a wee train ride - she had enough by the end and got distressed, which is unusual for her, bless her

🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🥰

Kids are 5 and 3 (both just had their birthdays). We're having loads of fun, it's great having them around and seeing their relationship grow. Feels like summer is going past too fast.

Oh thats lovely - almost august now! Do you get out much with them or is it fun in the garden?

As my dd is an only child, it takes a lot of energy to play with her which is tiring, I'll be honest 😄

Loving it so far, but I'm on leave this week so going on days out, chilling at home etc. Sadly have to work the next two weeks and then we go away so this is my only time to have 'home time' with them

I went to Carcassonne for 5 days, alone. So my holidays are going great so far! Signing up child to the gym tomorrow. I'm in Spain, kids broke up on 19th June so we're a month in! Child was at a summer camp for 4 weeks, now it's more chilled. They have some projects lined up to do and we're off camping next week, and hiking, in the Pyrenees. Looking to stay high enough up the mountains to avoid fires, we're keeping vigilant.

Ibi · 28/07/2026 20:45

It’s been great! It’s the first time we’ve experienced them. We were all off together for a holiday in the sun last week. This week is full of fun clubs with their friends whilst we work, following week they are with their grandparents in France (cannot wait for this as we can do adult things like go to the theatre, drinks after work, etc.), then another week of clubs with friends, then three weeks abroad all together with friends and family popping over for a bit. We are all so excited!

My two are 18 and 21.....the toilet roll is disappearing too quickly!!! Lots of Lego building for all of us. They are bored but apprenticeship and college await in September 🙏❤️

Yep we're out a lot. Usually twice a day at least, park or beach or bikes mixed in with something paid like swimming or pedalos on odd days. We do spend time at home and in the garden too, but typically everyone is happier (me included) when we're out doing stuff. I'm very lucky in that I'm self employed and can stop for the summer holidays so we get a lot of quality time and flexibility over plans.

Where do you go away to? 👀

I bet youre loving waking up and just having the day ahead of you! Who takes care of them when you work?

😄 re toilet roll

Between my dd and dcat, its running out fast here too, they seem to be trying to make their own Egyptian mummy (i'd better watch out!)

I bet its nice just to have lots of free time to relax and do lego without worrying about school mornings or exams!

Ofc I can imagine youre worried about the fires 😳

I bet the 5 days to yourself were lovely 😍 - sounds like youve done well with activities for 2.5 months!

@mumofoneisonozempic we have gone through a whole loo roll today... I might start charging 🤣🤣

They are just used to being at college all week.....now they are a little bit lost sigh

I'm so jealous of you having a week to do adult things! Have lots of fun and a drink or two for me!

That sounds like a lovely summer - where abroad will you be?

I didnt book anything abroad for me and dd this year, which I regret as she's already bored of going to the seaside!

The last time we went she was making sandcastles with a straight face the whole time 😑😄

We are a few days in to a two week family holiday, it's travelling across various places by train and then a longer stay at the end by the beach. Before that it was work and holiday clubs for a week (and will be again on return for the last three weeks ). The travel is going well, but I've spent months planning it, so I feel a bit on edge like I can't enjoy each day til it's done and gone ok. it's also quite expensive for us - all budgeted and saved for but I feel a slight pang about the expense anyway, always thinking could I have done this for less. I'm doing my best to push all that away and enjoy it!

badbunnysadbunny · 28/07/2026 21:20

ND 4 year old here , starts mainstream school in September 😮‍💨 currently trying to find the balance between doing too much and doing too little. Need to burn off his energy but don’t want to dysregulate him. wish there was an instruction manual!

Simonjt · 28/07/2026 21:21

Really good so far, we’ve been very lucky as we had a holiday together in Canada, the kids have had a week of day dance camp and they’ve had a weeks holiday with their grandma which meant we had our first ever childfree holiday, in fact its the longest time we’ve ever spent childfree as a couple.

Nothing else big planned, just free or very cheap day trips for the rest of the holidays.

I know!! I can’t wait!! We will probably have all these plans and end up not doing anything, but it’s nice to have some proper adult time together for a change. We will be drinking all the wine and eating deli food we don’t have to cook!

We’re off to Paris for a few days to see my brother, then the SW of France (luckily not in the wildfire area, but who knows how far it will spread 😔), with some parent friends, and then some time across the border in Spain. Ours are also getting complacent with the sandcastle building, but love the sea, so we have to tag team and drag them out when their bodies are wrinkly with the promise of ice cream!

Fluffyscrubberdo · 28/07/2026 21:24

We’re already on the 5th week so even though return to school isn’t until the first week of September it feels like the tail end of summer now and I already feel like they’re basically over!

TheChosenTwo · 28/07/2026 21:24

Okay here but I only have one teen ds left! I had an operation right at the start of the summer holidays so I’m signed off for a month, we’ve come to the seaside and him and dh are busy bustling about, fishing, swimming, bring me back Cornish pasty’s!
it’s relaxing.
It was more of a whirlwind when all 3dc were younger, it was less relaxing but still a lot of fun as I was either a SAHM or I worked term time so I was off with them all.

I know it’s hard, but try and just focus on the fun you’re having in the moment. Having that special time together without the stress of work or the home routine and seeing new things and spending quality time together is so precious. I have such great memories of childhood holidays where my parents were relaxed and we just had fun. You’ve budgeted, you’ve worked hard for it, you can save the money again, but the experiences are priceless.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 28/07/2026 22:58

Lovely so far, I’m a teacher so have the summer off. DD is 20 and working full time so I have the house to myself during the day. I’ve done lots of reading, exercise, and catching up with friends. Lots of long walks in nature. In about an hours time I’ll be heading to the airport for 5 days in Spain in an adults only spa hotel by the beach, all by myself. First time I’ve ever been away on my own and I can’t wait!

catonthebeds · 28/07/2026 23:07

Thank you! We have in fact shifted some plans for tomorrow to make it more relaxed, the kids are such wonderful ages (even the teen!) which is why we splashed out this year. I am trying to focus on how lucky we are when it all gets a little overwhelming!

DrCoconut · 28/07/2026 23:08

House is chaos as our turn came up with the builder who is completing our house renovation. I've taken out a loan to cover it and it's all hands to the pump now. Would have been much better in term time but it needs doing. Oldest DS is staying at home with the builder while I go out and about a bit with the younger ones, middle DS has a major scout camp next week and I've booked as much annual leave as I can for it all. All 3 DSs are ND to different extents and with varying needs which can be challenging.

MaryBennetsGlasses · 28/07/2026 23:15

So far so good 😁

We had the in laws visiting last week and that was great with cousins and days out. After they left my DS2 went out and met up with friends for the first time ever. He’s 14 with ASD and this feels like such a milestone.

Ive just finished work for nearly 3 weeks and we go on holiday tomorrow. DS1 has A level results to look forward to and has just started dating a very polite young man so it’s all happening here

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 28/07/2026 23:21

I work in a school so I'm off and it's been very nice so far. Tomorrow though we're going to spend two weeks with family, and they live somewhere I hate, and whilst I'm grateful for the fact they want us, and for them, it's not much of a holiday for me. Child loves it though so I pretend for her sake.

Dubrovnikgirl · 29/07/2026 00:31

I love summer holidays. My daughter's school finished on 22.07 and we went to Dubrovnik the day after. Staying here till end of August. Luckily, I can work from home (our house in Dubrovnik) for a few weeks and then relax.

My daughter also brought a friend who has never been to Dubrovnik before so the two of them are having a blast with my nieces and their friends.
Even we are having a heatwave, air con is on day and night and it's bliss.
