Aura/silent migraine

Hi. Just wondering if anyone suffers these? Just had it as a one off or they keep coming back?

I get these during hormonal changes like pregnancy, which is the main trigger for me. I've been warned I'll probably get them during peri-meno too.

If it's the first time you've gotten one, chat to your GP to rule out other causes for sure. If they do recur, there's medication options.

LuckyCharmz · 28/07/2026 19:13

I had a few during peri menopause, hrt stopped them.

BeardySchnauzer · 28/07/2026 19:13

Yes this is my first at 47 so I guess peri. I went to the stroke clinic to rule out TIA first.

have had brain fog for 12 days now which he implied was probably psychological at this point

not sure I can take hrt because of family risk factors. Did you get them regularly during peri or just a few times? At the moment I’m signed off work and I’m struggling emotionally with my brain not playing ball

I also developed these about a year after having my first baby. I thought I was having a stroke, it was terrifying! I used to get them once every few months with an occasional cluster over a few days,
They really ramped up during my second pregnancy and after the birth I was prescribed beta blockers due to having up to 5 a day.
There was definitely a hormonal link there.

Weirdly, I’m peri menopausal and I’ve not had one for around 3 years now.

BeardySchnauzer · 28/07/2026 19:21

Interesting it’s hormonal - the day I had the ‘episode’ my period started a week and a half early.

doctor found it odd I have no history of migraines around periods starting/pregnancy.

gratefulmezze · 28/07/2026 19:29

I have suffered from migraines my whole life (started in puberty, were unbearable during pregnancies)definitely hormone related and now in perimenopause they have become 'silent' with just the aura and extreme tiredness (thank goodness no horrific headaches / nausea anymore though)

PizzaPowder · 28/07/2026 19:30

I get these. They don’t last long and there are months between them. They don’t bother me that much.

InNewYorkNoShoes · 28/07/2026 19:31

It’s yet one more perimenopause related problem. First one I had I thought was a stroke.

Petrine · 28/07/2026 19:32

I get them. Once I realised what they are it doesn’t bother me.

BeardySchnauzer · 28/07/2026 19:38

I can’t work with this brain fog - my work is very brain heavy! It’s been 12 days now and if this becomes regular I don’t know what I would do

pregnantaura · 28/07/2026 19:59

A tip I got on mumsnet was full fat coke & salty food like pringles. It's worked for me for any headache after symptoms on the day, though I don't know if it'd help 12 days later.

It could be the brain fog is different peri meno symptoms? My sister is in the thick of it 11 years ahead of me. She went to a brilliant menopause clinic and got a lot of holistic advise alongside HRT. She's on a ton of supplements plus the hormones, and thinks they're making a difference.

BeardySchnauzer · 28/07/2026 20:01

My work has a menopause service - maybe I’ll give them a go. I can’t take hrt

I have been drinking coke - it’s my guilty pleasure but maybe it will help!!!

sunbeamsandsparkles · 28/07/2026 20:04

Yes, first got them when I was pregnant with my first. Now still get them every so often in the run up to my period or if I'm really stressed.
I find as long as I lie down in a very dark room within a few minutes of it starting then it will go pretty quickly, if I don't catch it in time it will make me vomit and I'm then groggy all day. horrible.

It’s yet one more perimenopause related problem. First one I had I thought was a stroke.

Please could you describe your symptoms? I had a suspected TIA a few weeks ago but nothing showed on scans. I’m wondering if it might be a weird perimenopausal migraine.

BeardySchnauzer · 28/07/2026 20:25

My ‘TIA’ was 90 minutes of not understanding the written word or being able to put into words what was thinking - came out as gobbledegook. Also had tingly sensation in fingers

if you google silent migraine it might be obvious to you (reading it certainly ticked all my boxes tbh!)

Did you have any stroke symptoms like mouth down on one side?

No. It was just the language disturbance really and headache

have they given you no guidance on what it could be? Have you any symptoms that have stayed after the TIA?

I’ve suffered with these for the last 21 years. They started in my first pregnancy, then my second, I’d then get them on the third day of each period. They got more frequent in perimenopause. Since I had iron infusions and a uterine ablation 3 years ago they have become less frequent for some reason. So it’s either hormonal or iron deficiency for me.

Even though I’ve had them all this time and my mum and sister suffers from them too I still find them absolutely terrifying, they only last 30 mins and I rarely get a headache but they often leave me feeling disoriented and just….weird.

redboxerclub · 28/07/2026 20:36

Yeah I have just started with these they are awful. I get a blind spot in my eye /vision and I feel funny. I called 111 and the said suspected TIA but CBA to go to A AND E and decided to self diagnose.

I have significant family history of severe chronic migraines. So I have diagnosed myself with aura. I have always had migraines just never with aura and never as severe as now. Also have my first one with vomiting not at the same time as the one with aura. It was so painful I thought I was going to die. I also called 111 then too. The pain kept waking me up.

saltandlineker · 28/07/2026 20:40

I’ve had this exact thing OP it’s called migraine with asphasia. I couldn’t text or speak properly for a couple of hours I have a history of migraines so I knew that it wasn’t a stroke but it’s the first time these symptoms had happened I usually get just the eye signs numb fingers and lips and then splitting headache and vomiting I got all of these and loss of speech and being able to write. The brain fog lasted a while I’d say about 3 days. Maybe go back to the doctor if it’s still there.

Yes they think possible TIA but could be migraine. No lasting effects beyond first 30 minutes. Nothing on scans. They’ve put me on thinners & statins despite no risk factors & are doing further investigations as I’m 49, so young stroke. I didn’t have any visual disturbances though & did have mouth down on left plus lack of coordination & unsteady on my feet. I want it to be migraine but in all likelihood probably wasn’t. They’re investigating AF etc

BeardySchnauzer · 30/07/2026 15:27

That’s interesting that nothing showed up on the scans but they still believe it was a TIA. At least they are still investigating and I hope you get a good answer
