I want some bin bags and dishwasher tablets - tight arse holiday self catering company

Booked a holiday apartment over looking the bay in Wales. Paid over £2k for the week. But has the sea view, parking, balcony.

Apartment is lovely. Very mod cons.

But I'm slightly narked and still narrowing my eyes whenever I walk to the kitchen area....

We are here for a week.
The company renting it out left a bottle of wine.
They left 3 dish washer tablets.

No washing up liquid.
No bin bags.
The shower was full of sand and we found finger and toes nails on the rug in the lounge.
Pillow cases stained.

I think it's cost cutting tightness. And they expect us to leave it sparkling (there is also no surface cleaner)..

Had to go out and buy the bin bags, washing liquid and cleaner.

We stay regularly in holiday homes (have a DC who has medical needs - this makes it easier for both them and me). Never had this tightness.

The place we're currently staying at in Pembrokeshire has no grill pan, no scissors (not on the kitchen inventory apparently), the folding airer is broken, 1 tea towel and no bedding/towel change for a 2 week stay, no DVD player (needed because the Wi-Fi only works at 5-7am), 1 council food caddy bag, only 2 slots of the 4 slot toaster work and the fabric armchair is stained.

I've emailed the holiday let company to complain. It's annoying when we're paying £1,500 a week for a 4 person cottage.

And this is why I use hotels…

I'm inclined to agree @Duvetdayneeded. Next time I go walking here I will definitely be staying in a hotel. The reviews for the place we're staying at are misleadingly good and the photos on the holiday let website are out of date.

Agreed. You can get some amazing bargains and no need to do any housework.

I wouldn’t expect those on a self catering property. The cleanliness is a completely different matter.

I know someone whose job it is to turn around Center Parcs villas. They charge about counting stuff so they can replace what has been stolen and make sure they leave the same for each guest.
It’s a full on job. Hard to get the staff to do that now that people and agencies have bought up so much of the accommodation in holiday areas that there is nowhere for the cleaners to live.
I guess before the internet the place would have to be managed by someone who lived nearby but now everyone and their agency is trying to make their money with as little work as possible hence the shoddy cleaning and no supplies.

Yes. Stay in hotels. Maybe caravans parks. Support the local economy and jobs. Stop the Airbnb misery for locals.

We stayed in a lovely place last year and in each of the many bathrooms was a pack of loo roll. One bathroom had a new 9 pack; one only had a couple of roles left in the pack. It was funny as we arrived, thought it looked and felt good, did a proper look around, saw those and I just felt myself relax as though it was some secret signal that this was going to be a nice, easy holiday. The bathroom with only a couple of loo rolls in it was the downstairs one so one of the most heavily used and we got a nine pack to replace it when we ran out. We could have taken a spare roll from another bathroom but this felt more appropriate.

I once stayed in an Airbnb that only had one tea bag in for the one night I stayed. SO stingy. Really poor hospitality imo. At the very least, they should be providing washing up liquid and bin bags.

So do i, and even when they provide toilet roll, it’s never enough to last us a week.

We stayed in a mobile home for 3 nights and had everything including a new toy and travel water bottle for the dog, shampoo, biscuits etc. it was under £300 and we thought it was too generous! Then went to house in Dorset for £2000 and they’d left one sachet of fairy liquid for a week. Must’ve cost nearly as much as a cheap whole bottle. They’d done something so you couldn’t just put the heating on too the tight wads. Beach house at Camber sands was best rental we’ve been too. There was a cupboard of spirits, a fridge full of wine it was unbelievable. Not really sure how it worked as the drink wasn’t mentioned. We drank what we wanted and left some beers we hadn’t used not sure if that was the right thing to do. The inconsistency is baffling and it seems the cost of accommodation has nothing to do with what’s there.

That's really terrible.

We have stayed at places where they provided endless loo rolls and at others where we were expected to buy our supply. You can't tell unless in reviews people mention that provisions were plentiful .I always expect to provide everything as we prefer self catering.

I’d have taken photos and called the agent immediately re cleanliness. I’d also have complained there wasn’t any supplies

To be honest this is why I book hotels, I have had good holiday lets but so hit and miss. If anyone wants a recommendation for a place in Finland though I found a gem on a lake with a canoe and bikes provided!

I don't use self catering places that much - like others its hotels all the way for me. But I had assumed self catering meant you supplied everything yourself - cleaning stuff and toilet rolls included (beyond a first complementary one).

I have been put off after a couple of times we booked holiday flats in France and had to pay extra for bed linen and towels to be supplied.

When I walk, it can be up to 13 hours ( usually in the Scottish Highlands) and I don’t even know if anywhere will be open for a dinner when I have finished.

That's why I said that we ring down for room service.

In the remote areas of the Scottish Highlands we stay in? 😂

Why should you leave it clean,are you meant to clean it before leaving,isn't there a cleaner?

I agree with you,there should be dish soap and a sponge,dw tablets hand wash, loo roll,bin bags ,tea,coffee and milk and some biscuits/ cake.

The best place we went to told us in advance she would be backing for our arrival and we turned up to scones,homemade jam and cake. It was lovely to sit in the garden and have afternoon tea and start the holiday immediately. Wasn't an expensive place either.

We love walking in Scotland and have regularly stayed in some small, family run B&Bs. Clean, comfortable, reasonably priced. Don't have to empty the bins or mop floors or clean toilets. One was run by two elderly ladies who would leave us something in the kitchen to heat up if they'd gone to bed!
Such a great holiday.
