My bid to win Most Boring Thread of the Day badge (chickpea related)

So people weren't lying when they said jarred chickpeas are far superior to tinned. Popped open a jar of those Bold Bean chickpeas this morning, and oh my, never before have I found chickpeas to be moreish until now. I keep popping back to the fridge to snaffle a few more.

I am ashamed of my former self who rolled her eyes at recipe suggestions that said jarred chickpeas would yield better results.

I am now a convert.

Ok, but this isnt boring

I like chickpeas.

PullTheBricksDown · 26/07/2026 16:46

Didn't know chickpeas in a jar existed! It's still only mildly interesting though so 👏👏👏

JennyChawleigh · 26/07/2026 16:48

Try the same brand butter beans!

OttersOnAPlane · 26/07/2026 16:48

If you can't afford the snazzy chickpeas in jars, simmering tinned chickpeas on the hob for 20 minutes with a generous pinch of bicarb makes them much nicer.

Bold Beans are lush, I definitely agreed.

TheresMillionsOfGeoffreys · 26/07/2026 16:48

They're amazing, aren't they!?

superspideysense · 26/07/2026 16:48

Not boring!! Super helpful! Love chickpeas and never tried jarred. They seem pricy but maybe worth it??

M&S , 55p if I remember rightly , so similar price to a tin

nobodysdaughter · 26/07/2026 16:53

Worth the money, really nice, like a whole different legume entirely when they’re out of the jar!

bugalugs45 · 26/07/2026 16:53

Probably available elsewhere too

I'm like you in your previous incarnation as a Jarred Bean denier but with regard to butter beans!
Do I need to give him and try them?
Can they be £3.40's worth better?
I suppose I will only find the truth by paying up and experimenting!

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 26/07/2026 16:54

They regularly get reduced to £2.80 or so in the supermarkets. You can also get 12 jars for about the same price on Amazon!

notacooldad · 26/07/2026 16:56

The bold beans chickpeas are good but come with added salt. During processing them the chick pea water becomes a stock, which helps them taste great. Therefore these are great in savoury dishes but if you need them to make deserts you have to wash all the stock away, which is a bit wasteful.
I suppose you could use the stock water in savoury recipes and use it in pasta / risotto or a little in curries.

bugalugs45 · 26/07/2026 17:00

Oh just read that they’re a specific brand , havent tried those , I’ve become very invested in this thread , commented 3 times in 10 minutes 😂

TidyRose · 26/07/2026 17:03

I don't think this is as boring as the thread about the locker doors being open.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 26/07/2026 17:05

Beans in jars are popular in Spain. They are so much nicer than the tinned ones. The Bold Beans black beans make great chilli.

Thehorticulturalhussie · 26/07/2026 17:07

No, this is an excellent thread OP!

Thehorticulturalhussie · 26/07/2026 17:07

And chick pea sprouts are lovely and easy to grow.

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2026 17:09

well you do win the award but I don’t buy tinned anymore, jarred all the way. Far superior, really creamy and much more flavoursome. They are far more expensive but far far nicer, worth every penny. Not sure it would be as noticeable if you were whizzing them up to make hummus but since I hate hummus I’ve not tried. I use them in salads and things like Ottolenghis confit tandoori chickpeas (don’t scrimp on the oil, it’s divine for dunking bread into).

Definitely going to buy these and do a compare and contrast

PrincessOfPreschool · 26/07/2026 17:09

Well I sometimes soak my own and boil them. Seem the same as the tinned ones. Not tried jar ones. I have bought jar hot dogs though.

I used to read instructions to cook your own chickpeas rather than using tinned and I'd think 'what in the lentil waving madness kind of instruction is this' and now I realise they actually were on to something

OP posts:
bagelsandlox · 26/07/2026 17:11

I love all Bold Bean products but find I end up mashing half the beans as I struggle to get them out of the jar. Am I missing a trick?

Shloopie · 26/07/2026 17:12

nobodysdaughter · 26/07/2026 16:53

yes! completely different

OP posts:
Boiledbeetle · 26/07/2026 17:27

Well who knew! It was bad enough knowing you could get the buggers in tins. Now I discover the food of the devil comes in jar form as well.

I refuse to believe a chickpea can ever taste nice, no matter how it's packaged.

I also refuse to buy a jar of them in order to see if the OP is correct.

I am happy in my irrational hatred of chickpeas.

(Definitely not the most boring of boring things I've read on here.)

DoctorMartin · 26/07/2026 17:31

Lidl do them cheaply in Spanish week!
