My bid to win Most Boring Thread of the Day badge (chickpea related)

So people weren't lying when they said jarred chickpeas are far superior to tinned. Popped open a jar of those Bold Bean chickpeas this morning, and oh my, never before have I found chickpeas to be moreish until now. I keep popping back to the fridge to snaffle a few more.

I am ashamed of my former self who rolled her eyes at recipe suggestions that said jarred chickpeas would yield better results.

I am now a convert.

Oh my. A friend cooked a bean stew with the Bold Beans queen👑 butter beans the other day. I am a convert. Are they really £3 a jar?!

mynameiscalypso · 26/07/2026 19:47

Bold Beans have spoilt all other beans for me.

Advocodo · 26/07/2026 20:08

Totally agree how much more tastier jarred chickpeas are and I have only just discovered that too! And they are very healthy.

SummitWrong · 26/07/2026 20:11

I have a jar in the cupboard, and butter beans after I decided to be frivolous and do an Ocado shop. Not tried them yet though.

Do the chickpeas still have their slimy little condoms on?

PurpleCoo · 26/07/2026 20:16

I love Bold Beans, and have their recipe books as well. All so delicious.

Have you tried their jarred black chickpeas? Really nice in their chickpea, sweet potato and peanut curry

Bold Beans have a recipe for chickpea, sweet potato and peanut curry. I use their black chickpeas, and it's amazing

Switherings · 26/07/2026 20:20

It’s not boring. If it was about butter beans, that would be boring.

sumac · 26/07/2026 20:23

I used to soak and cook my own chickpeas. Not any more. BoldBean Co are just as good. For the dried chick peas that NEVER go soft, despite cooking them for hours, Bold are better. Do think cooking your own butter beans might be superior though.

GuavaBanana · 26/07/2026 20:31

Have you tried the ones in sachets from Merchant Gourmand? I've been stocking up when they are on offer (which seems to be most of the time atm - got a bit of a stash going) - I'd be interested to know how the jarred ones compare to those?

Agree I can no longer buy tinned! - but from previous comment am tempted to try boiling my own and freezing.

They are around that price but for something like a bean stew they are the focal point of the dish!
I don’t think twice about spending good money on steak for steak night because the steak is the star of the show.
in saying that, we do prioritise food and good quality ingredients so I spend high on pretty much everything - and it makes such a difference!

DandelionClockSeeds · 26/07/2026 20:50

What about the skins??
Im trying to eat better, and taking salads into work. But chickpea skins are awful and skinning a whole tin takes forever!

franke · 26/07/2026 21:04

I made Tim Spector's aubergine and chickpea traybake recently. Used jarred instead of tinned - what a difference!

@TourdeCrema for chickpea curry have you looked at Chetnamakan.co.uk? She does various curries with chickpeas. A couple have made it onto the family recipe rotation in our house.

Chetna has some lovely recipes. Agree @Shloopie that jarred chickpeas are massively superior.

HoppityBun · 26/07/2026 21:21

More and more beans seem to be being sold in jars

Spottydalmation · 26/07/2026 21:28

Enjoying reading this whilst snacking on my crunchy roasted chickpeas. Bold Bean, obvs.

Bonnicarose · 26/07/2026 21:55

Just joining the wonder of Bold beans!!! I recently discovered the Bold Beanco chilli baked beans as well … fantastic!

PrincessofWills · 26/07/2026 21:58

I used to buy bottled chickpeas in Spain in Mercadona, they're great for hummus.

Are they the ones with as one chipotle in? Those are my favourites. A jar does me two meals, topped with a poached egg. I stock up when they're reduced to £2.50

I've been buying them direct from the Bold Bean website before they got stocked in supermarkets. They really are superb.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 26/07/2026 22:47

The stock they’re cooked in is banging!

Notellinganyone · 26/07/2026 22:55

Absolutely worth every penny. My DH makes a Rick Stein recipe with chickpeas, parsley, garlic, lemon and fish sauce. Since he switched to Bold Beans it is amazing!

Yes!!! I had half a jar on sourdough with fried eggs on top, soooo good and such a find!

They make such a difference to any bean recipe don’t they! I’ve been making chick pea and parsnip curry, also a Thai veg and chick pea curry.
