Hi, just wondering whether anyone has given their child phenergan? My daughter is 10 but I’m wary of giving it to her as someone has told me their child slept for 3 days! Has anyone any experience of using it?

I have used the liquid form for my children prescribed by a doctor. They slept well for a short amount of time but one of my children it makes them super super hyper.
Are you waiting it for a sleep aid or travel sickness?

Using it for severe travel sickness but don’t mind her going to sleep but want to be able to wake her when we land!

GP has prescribed the tablets so considering breaking them in half

My parents were given this for me when I was The Child That Never Slept in the early 80s.

It didnt work. The direct opposite in fact. (Later diagnosed with ADHD which is apparently not compatible with phenergan)

We used it for travel sickness when DD was little. It knocked her out, so no sickness but also not enjoyment of any days out.

I’m 51 and it’s the only thing that helps me sleep. 😴

I take HALF a Phenergan for the purposes of sleep every now and again when my sleep has been exceptionally rubbish. Maybe once a month. Within 30-45 minutes, that half tablet will knock me out completely, and I’ll sleep for about 9-10 hours straight. (I don’t want to get dependent on it so it really is occasional use.)
I’m sure it doesn’t have this effect on everyone but it feels really strong to me!

Obvs trust your doctor but be aware it can be quite potent.

I ve given it to my children for travel sickness and not noticed any extra sleeping

It's used as a sedative in mental health settings, so be very careful. What's the strength of the tablets you have?

My adult daughter only eight stone is prescribed this as PRN for when she is too distressed ( diagnosed bipolar affective disorder) one little blue pill knocks her out in 20 minutes .

Very similar for me when given it for nausea in pregnancy. I couldn’t get off the sofa. I’d try it with her first OP just had a tablet, before you travel.

I was prescribed this for sleep and it made me vomit so much that I now state on medical forms I’m allergic to it - and I’ve never been allergic to anything.

I asked the pharmacist what would make DS sleep on a flight to Florida - he was four. He recommended Phenergan! DS didn’t stop talking for 8 hours. It made him hyper - exhausting for us!

I was given it for severe morning sickness and it turned me into a complete zombie. Not ideal when I had a toddler to look after!

My friend gave me one of these recently as a hayfever tablet (anti-histamine) ?!?!?! and I fell asleep in the middle of the day after taking it which is very unlike me. I had no idea it was prescribed for sleep. Is it never prescribed as an anti-allergy medication then?

Very wary of this now….not seen or heard of any positive experiences with it.

For most people, it puts them to sleep but there is a cohort for whom it does the opposite. I was always advised to try it out first at home prior the day you actually want it for so any unwanted reaction is managed in private.

I would occasionally give it to dd if she desperately needed sleep - just the tip of a teaspoon and have taken it myself - just 1/4 of a teaspoon. I would go to sleep quickly enough, wake up normally but would feel sluggish until about midday.

I treated it as just another tool in the kit for occasional use.

I’ve used it regularly for about a decade, both liquid form when the kids were little and pill form as a sleep aid.
It’s sold OTC here - I always had a bottle for emergencies (peanut allergy) but also gave to my kids on flights for sleep.
It was the only antihistamine that would help us sleep but didn’t leave anyone groggy the next day.

I absolutely love phenergan for sickness and when I need to sleep e.g. for jet lag (melatonin gives me headaches). It’s always in my cupboard. I also use it to visit PILs because aside from stopping me getting sick in the car, it puts me in a lovely state of DGAF. It’s very light on me (52kg) and I haven’t ever been zombified or felt groggy from it. My only issue was that I couldn’t tolerate it (or anything except ondanestron melts) when I was pregnant with hyperemesis gravidarum but that’s a totally different level of sickness. Everyone is different. The one I react badly to is cyclizine.

It's the only thing that works for our 12yo. He's had it since he was 5 and the liquid was available over the counter at pharmacies. He now takes the recommended dose of 2 tablets the night before. The only time it sent him to sleep was when we gave him a second dose of the liquid on a particularly twisty coach transfer.

I remember the weird trapped trippy way I felt when my parents gave it to me.

On the bright side I’ve never taken drugs because I was too terrified of ever feeling like that again. On the less bright side I freak out when I have to take meds that have a sedative effect in case the trippy aspect comes back.

I don’t blame my parents. They were knackered with a mini insomniac. DS didn’t sleep through the night until he was 6 years old so I know how they felt.

But it did a number on me and I couldn’t in good conscious give it to my own child knowing how scary, paralysing and freaky it felt trapped inside my own body with altered thinking.

I really didn’t get on with the stuff. Used it for my DS on a flight for travel sickness and honestly it was the worst flight of my life. It sent him into a 2 hour hyper episode but he was completely disconnected from everything. Couldn’t focus or listen and spent that time holding him in the galley until he finally calmed down and passed out.

I decided to try it on myself out of curiosity and woke up at 2am hallucinating and my arms flailing uncontrollably . It went straight in the bin.

i wouldn’t say don’t try it as people all seem to respond differently but I’d definitely give it a test run beforehand so you’re not caught off guard.

Yes be careful they’re very strong I cut a 50mg tablet into six and then sleep for 9 hours and feel very irritable the next day.

I use it sometimes for sleep, for a 10 year old I would try a non sedating travel sickness medication. Ones that have Hyoscine hydrobromide as the active ingredient have been good for DD and me.
