I'll kick off with:

"What temperature should I wash my sheets and towels at?"

He'd been there 9 months.

My son would never admit I might know something he doesn't so I presume he is happily boil washing his delicates and doing a rinse on his bedding.

The texts I get go along these lines ( after complete radio silence fir a month).

"Hi mum how are you? How are my siblings? How is dad. I really miss you. Sorry it's been so long I'm just so busy and feel so terrible about that. It's been too long. Let's make quality time to chat this week. I can talk any evening. Would be so lovely to hear your voice. Love you so much"

Followed the next night with "I know this is really cheeky and I hate to ask but can you spare me £10? I need to get a prescription. I know tines are hard I hate to ask. I hope this is OK? I can pay you back on x when I get my grant"

Like £10 will bankrupt me. So I say " hey no problem. Didn't realise you was so short of money? I have transfered you £100. Buy some shopping and treat yourself to a takeaway."

Cue..... radio silence 😂 because that £10 really was the difference between life and death and getting ten times that amount doesn't even warrant a thank you. Twat. but I love him. He is so dramatic.

A few scary phonecalls, the first of its kind:
19 yr old DD calls from a European city 9pm Friday night in floods of tears, "mum I'm being followed, don't know where I am, dropping a pin, on 2% can you order me an Uber?"
Absolutely terrified watching the first Uber circle the area then leave.

Rang DD, she had to move as still being followed, by two men on a moped, dropped a new pin and phone cut out.

Ordered another Uber and messaged him saying I'll give an extra €10 tip PLEASE PLEASE pick up my daughter, she's in the area and being followed.

Held my breath watching the Uber stop for 10 seconds and drive off in the direction of her flat, but had to wait an extra 5 mins after the trip ended for her to get in and charge her phone to ring to say she's home safe.

My god, that must've been terrifying for you! 😮

Tryonemoretime · 22/07/2026 22:49

My son rang to ask how you can tell when baked beans are cooked..... He's actually very intelligent!

My brother is famous for texting my mum (on his gap year)

‘Just crossing the border into Zimbabwe, but I think I have malaria’. Then going silent for three days.

He didn’t have malaria, but his did need to get a Zimbabwean SIM card.

Brilliant! He won't live that one down, will he!

Denim4ever · 22/07/2026 22:52

I'm probably not the only one who received a text from ambulance crew on DCs phone. He's fine now, but had a seizure and neurosurgery 5 weeks later.

So when he rings up to ask if it's ok to eat yogurt with use by tomorrow's date, I'm very happy to have that normality.

Yikes101 · 22/07/2026 22:58

I’m a nurse so mine were usually photos of dds flatmates grinning and holding their antibiotics asking “are they okay on these?” Or photos of bumps, burns, cuts and bruises asking if A&E is needed.
Dd was quite competent at cooking, cleaning etc and probably saved her flatmates parents a couple of these calls, one videoed her ironing so they could watch it back next time and another wrote down her recipe for leftovers pasta.
Most scary ones turned out to be drunken butt dials!

venusandmars · 22/07/2026 22:58

My dc used to phone me and ask for the recipe hotline! "What can I do with a butternut squash, half a red pepper and some cheese?" or "give me some great veggie pizza suggestions"

Of course they could have googled, but there was always a link back to meals we'd enjoyed as a family.

Tables turned recently when I was staying in an airbnb that had an air fryer. Me: "How do you clear melted plastic from an air fryer?" not realising that you didn't put the container in the damn machine, you just tip the food in

Blingismything · 22/07/2026 22:59

Sorry to dampen the mood but I once received a distressed call from my daughter to say someone in the flat next door to theirs in halls had just committed suicide. The students were temporarily rehoused. It was a very sobering time for them all.

And put wellies, Crocs or flip flops on.

And use washing up gloves, obviously dry them first

Mum my car has been hijacked with Bryson still on the back seat!

Hard to rate the shock level of this without knowing.whether Bryson is a child, dog, soft toy, or copy of Notes from a Small Island.

Re steam programmes in washing machines, as PP have pointed out there are 2.very different types. The Samsung hygiene steam would be great for towels - it's a full wash followed by the steam treatment. The 5-min dewrinkling type would not.

My god, that must've been terrifying for you! 😮

It really was and the experience that all new frightening events DD puts us through gets compared to!

Is Chicken like streak, can I eat it medium rare?

Ours was about chicken too.

DS (with DofE gold) facetimed me to show me the chicken breast he was cooking, cut in half, and to ask whether it was cooked enough.

We had a rerun of the conversation we’d had before he left on how to tell if the chicken is cooked and how it doesn’t involve facetime.

Yogafiend · 22/07/2026 17:09

This response shocked me the most! You must have a towel program… and a hand wash program… and what if you want just a quick rinse of something? You can’t only use one program surely?!?!! 🤭😉

Oh honey. There is zero need for a separate ‘towel
programme’. You’ve been scammed by Big Laundry.

Conicallychronic · 23/07/2026 00:05

I’ve spent all my money…..

My dd informed me that her washing machine has a steam program when I asked her what temperature she washes her sheets and rowels🤢. When I asked if she’s steaming her dirty towels she unconvincingly said no, no, I just wash in whatever program comes on first.

🤣🤣🤣

I'll kick off with:

"What temperature should I wash my sheets and towels at?"

He'd been there 9 months.

This isn't so bad. There are debates about what temp is suitable, because of energy saving etc. and he might have wanted to know what you do. It doesn't necessarily mean he hasn't washed his sheets in nine months.

I hope.

CrazyMidget · 23/07/2026 00:59

Breadlegs · 22/07/2026 16:02

Answering these questions is our only shot at immortality. For generations the washing temperature advice will be passed down parent to child. That's your mark on this world. Sorry it wasn't like the taj Mahal or something, but it's quite impressive.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not at uni but visiting Grandma, 150 miles away: 'Where's my jacket?'
I'm not saying he's predictable, but I knew exactly where it would be, and it was.

This is brilliant!

I'm enjoying this thread. I, too, have called my dad from a long way away because there was a mouse. In my case, I called him from another continent. 🤣 Subconsciously, I think I reckoned that his telepresence in the room would fix the mice! 😆

To the Google of the time...Mum

Sis and I used to joke that Mum was the Cookery Helpline. The Helpline was still in use well into our forties! Would still be in use today if she hadn't inconveniently gone and passed away!!!

Anotherdayofrain · 22/07/2026 17:29

That is a landline.

Come on, most people use the landline to mean a phone in their house. If you have to go out to a phone box, you don't have a landline.

Hehe, good old Terry. All the TOGs knew how to get it right so the sprouts could be consumed through a straw. YEARS ahead of smoothies and protein shakes, hehe 😉

But did the MOGs know?

CrazyMidget · 23/07/2026 01:19

JennyChawleigh · 22/07/2026 17:33

And reach them how to improvise and substitute when cooking. My son's flatmate were very impressed that he could make an edible (if unexciting) pasta sauce with some random ingredients at the end of term when they'd all run out of money.

How do you do that? Not only do I not know which flavours and textures go together, but I don't know where to get that knowledge. I can cook fine - but I have to follow a recipe almost to the letter.

unkownone · 23/07/2026 02:42

DD moved to a city 4 hours away..she called in tears and panicking she's sliced her finger open cutting a lime - She was bleeding and about to pass out. Call SIL and as they live in the same city can she urgently drive and help her. Sit panicking waiting for details from the emergency department. SIL calls she gave her a band aid. Apparently it probably might have cut through one layer of skin..but that was it. That and she was told not to hold limes when cutting as apparently DD thought it had a seed like the Avocado she'd cut!

notagypsy · 23/07/2026 02:47

When I was at uni I fancied baking a cake, I was confused by the instructions and phoned my mum asking how many pounds are in an ounce! Still not a great baker
