Got a UTI 😔

JacknDiane · 20/07/2026 13:35

Started yesterday, by last night I had to go to the late pharmacy to get antibiotics, which are helping to be fair.
But just feel a bit yuck and sorry for myself. Am hoping the 3 days of antibiotics clear it and I dont need to try to get a doctors appointment this week.

I haven't had this since ds was born and hes an adult now.

Any tips on how to feel better would be appreciated. Im drinking water so far.

I find cranberry juice helps. Hope you feel better soon x

JacknDiane · 20/07/2026 13:56

Thanks, I'll get cranberry juice, I forgot about that.

Tbh you’ve got the antibiotics and that’s the best thing for it, no amount of cranberry juice will help clear an infection. Hopefully the 3 day course works for you. I find drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated helps with symptoms

I used some UTIpro plus tablets recently after a UTI, it helped clear it up faster. They are OTC and worth a go.

JacknDiane · 20/07/2026 16:59

How old are you? Menopausal? Oestrogen cream sorted my endless UTIs.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 20/07/2026 17:04

Awww bless, so horrid
cranberry juice is good as a preventative- fruit barley squash will be more effective now as it neutralises the acid.

Didimum · 20/07/2026 17:05

Teaspoon of bicarb in water. Chug chug chug.

Mary46 · 20/07/2026 17:06

Raccoonsmacaroons · 20/07/2026 17:06

Gallons and gallons of water.

I regularly get UTI's thanks to the medication I'm on, and I had a really good chat to the GP last time. He said cranberry juice/barley water is a myth, as is D Mannose supplements and that if they really helped, they'd be given to patients on prescription! They're essentially full of sugar and that helps no ones bladder. The only thing that does help is scrupulous hygiene, and drinking lots of water to flush the bacteria out while you're waiting for the antibiotics to work.

Melarus · 20/07/2026 17:43

D-mannose won't shift a UTI on its own, but in combination with the antibiotics it does help. It's a form of glucose your body can't totally digest, so sone of it comes out through the urinary tract and helps to flush out the bacteria.

palorina · 20/07/2026 17:51

Another post meno here, and I cannot praise estrogen cream enough for keeping the UTIs away. Amongst other benefits 😉

Takes a while for it to take effect, but do try it, consistently.

JacknDiane · 21/07/2026 11:08

Funnily enough, ive only been using estrogen cream a few months and this is my first UTI in 25 years. I also use vagifem, been over 10 years on that.
Late 50s.

It won't help an active infection but for prevention, Optibac for Women has been a game changer for me! Last year I had a sudden run of UTIs, I think it was 4 in the space of 6 months, horrendous. Had a bladder and kidney scan which was normal and GP didn't seem fussed in finding why it kept happening but I kept seeing people online recommend Optibac so thought there was nothing to lose...haven't had a single UTI since!

princesspadam · 21/07/2026 12:36

There is no evidence for cranberry juice

GreaterCassowary · 21/07/2026 13:10

My urologist agrees that there's no solid evidence for cranberry juice but he does recommend D-Mannose. I take it every day but you can also take it several times a day during an active infection alongside antibiotics.

ikeepforgetting · 21/07/2026 13:15

I think I may be brewing one for the first time in decades - did the pharmacy diagnose you? because getting a GP appointment takes forever here

Just FYI
Bacterial / Aerobic Vaginosis can mimic UTIs and if probiotics help it could be that
So many women told its Chronic UTI and its actually Vaginosis
Avoid baths, shower instead
Lots of yoghurt, kefir etc
Vaginal probiotics

Ask GP to send a urine sample AND a vaginal swab
There was another thread on here and women were sufferimg for months

D Mannose has worked wonders for me. It will not clear an infection but I take daily for prevention. I used to routinely get UTIs every 6 months, for years. I started taking D Mannose daily to see if they’d prevent UTIs and I haven’t had one since. Obviously good hygiene and staying hydrated helps but sometimes even when you’re doing both of those it doesn’t always prevent one.

At my doctors if you phone in a morning they ask you to drop a sample in, test it and call you back that same day then prescribe if needed. If your doctors don’t do it like that you can order them through boots and other pharmacy’s although you do have to pay, usually around £20. You can also walk in to a pharmacy and see someone

princesspadam · 21/07/2026 13:43

You don’t even need a sample at my pharmacy, you pop in, give the symptoms and they prescribe

but agree with other posters vaginal oestrogen in the new wonder drug
