Anyone else imagine random unlikely things you could do in the future and feel disappointed knowing they're never going to happen?

I've got this idea in my head that I really want to live in the Netherlands for a month, staying in a small, pretty town and going on trips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and anywhere else worth seeing.

I was facing the possibility of redundancy at work and I kind of started daydreaming about what I would do if I did lose my job. I'm lucky, I suppose, not to be one of the ones being made redundant, but disappointed that I'm not going to be able to just go off somewhere and just take time out to breathe and sort of reset my life.

I've never been to the Netherlands and my vision of fresh air, windmills and tulips is probably completely inaccurate, and also I'd be going on my own and a month is probably too long to spend all alone, but too short to make new friends while I was there. Also the sensible thing to do if I was made redundant would be to immediately start job hunting, not run off to another country.

So I know it was something that was probably never going to happen anyway, but still feeling kind of sad that it definitely won't.

Does anyone else have random whims or daydreams that you know you shouldn't or can't do, and you're not even sure why you want to, but now you've had the idea you really, really want to do it?

I always wanted to circumnavigate the globe on a yacht but I can’t afford a yacht and I get horrifically seasick. 😂

BirdLandedonmyHead · 19/07/2026 17:31

I quite fancy working in Antarctica.
I hate cold weather.

NoraLuka · 19/07/2026 17:38

Why couldn’t you do this, OP? Or a version of it.

I want to go on a road trip around Europe, I hesitate between bicycle or motorbike and have thought of different itineraries but basically I’d go east through central France, Germany, Czech Republic and then through Poland, the Baltic countries and then head back home. I can’t do this right now because DD2 has health issues which mean I can’t leave her alone for so long but one day, if it’s ever possible I’ll do it!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 19/07/2026 17:44

I would quite like to get married and have a big wedding, but it'll never happen.

That would be an amazing thing to do... If it wasn't for the sea sickness.

Absolutely. I want to get married again. I want the excitement of picking the venue, invitations, wearing the beautiful dress. I’d love it. Very happy with DH and no desire to leave him though. 😂 Also, I wouldn’t want to do our wedding again or renew our vows as I feel it would detract from our lovely original wedding all those years ago. I wouldn’t want a re-do so guess I’m just stuck looking at wedding dresses online!

Antarctica must be an amazing place to see, with the icy landscapes, the penguins, the seals, but, yes, far too cold.

Sometimes I daydream about having kids and think there's still time to decide to do it. I'm 52 😂

WhatAMarvelousTune · 19/07/2026 17:49

I’ve always fancied winning Wimbledon.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/07/2026 17:50

Well I often daydream about designing and building an amazing house.

Or actually even going for a run or a walk in tbe woods. Now disabled so won’t be able to do that again.

AshtonGardens · 19/07/2026 17:52

I got told last week by a medical consultant that I should never do sky-dving. It's not top of my list of priorities, but has always been something I thought I would like to try. It seems it was not to be! He also banned martial arts, but am not bothered about that...

I'm sorry your dd has health issues, I hope they're something that she'll recover from, and I hope you'll be able to fulfil your dream of biking around Europe.

I can't really go off to the Netherlands or anywhere else for a month because I can't justify just leaving my job, and with things the way they are at the company at the moment I'd be unlikely to be able to take a sabbatical.

I could go there on holiday for a week or two, which would be nice, but it wouldn't be the same as having a month out of normal life, and I think that's what I really want, and for some reason I've just fixed on the Netherlands as the place to do that.

I always wanted to swim the channel. Except I really don't fancy the actual doing it bit 😂
I also wanted to work on a kibbutz but I'll never do that now.
And I'd like to kayak somewhere really amazing but fear my age and a fat arse aren't ideal any more 😂

Hatty65 · 19/07/2026 18:00

I have had to come to terms with the fact that I will never win an Olympic medal now.

I'm 60 and overweight. But I used to be sporty, and always vaguely thought I might do 'something' for Great Britain.

That's quite sweet, sounds like your wedding was so perfect you'd want to relive it, but your marriage is so perfect you wouldn't want another wedding.

I want to live my early 20’s out living and working on super yachts. Shitty jobs but see the world, have some wild experiences etc. problem is I’m a 44 year old married mother so that’s not happening.

See all a “gap year” (from what I don’t know) to Aus, or interailing, or anywhere.

Also run a fabulous hair and beauty salon but I’ve never cut anyone’s hair in my life.

Become a zoologist or marine wildlife expert and just have a wonderful life with animals.

I kind of feel like this with being pregnant. I don’t want to be pregnant again or have another baby but the excitement of the day you have them and bringing a new baby home is almost addictive!

I’ve looked at cycling through France and onto Vienna. Once in Vienna there is a night train to Amsterdam and you can take your bike on the train. Then cycle to Rotterdam and get the ferry to Harwich

ive started this year just cycling to France, it’s a start as I work my way round doing other countries

i I live the slow pace of travel, stopping when I want to take a photo or have a coffee

BeardySchnauzer · 19/07/2026 18:21

I want to do a month in Paris in a little studio overlooking a busy street in the Latin quarter. I prove my French and tick off all those more obscure place I’d like to visit

I couldn’t leave my dogs for that long though

I’ve always wanted to be a theme park designer. I have no artistic ability whatsoever, got a B in GCSE physics and have no background in the theme park or hospitality industries.

Still quietly cross that the new Universal Studios haven’t tried to headhunt me.

Every time I watch a triathlon I think how great it looks and that I could easily do one. I cycle. Slowly. I swim. Slowly, and only in a pool. I don't run. But still, I watch them and think I'd be a fantastic triathlete.
If there was a prize for the slowest competitor I could probably win that!

I like the idea of having swum the channel, coming out of the sea at the end of it, but like you I'm not too keen on the swimming part.

My only experience of kayaking was on a school residential when I was eleven. I capsized into the freezing cold lake and that put me off for life.

My dad worked on a kibbutz in the seventies. He said he had to start work at 4am every day, which sounds like hell to me.

I read something the other day that you can only swim from England to France. The way it was written led me to believe the French think the English are weird for wanting to do it!

Same, but when I read some of these threads about some husbands, I’m actually thinking perhaps it’s not so bad I’ll never get married!
