Anyone else imagine random unlikely things you could do in the future and feel disappointed knowing they're never going to happen?

I've got this idea in my head that I really want to live in the Netherlands for a month, staying in a small, pretty town and going on trips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and anywhere else worth seeing.

I was facing the possibility of redundancy at work and I kind of started daydreaming about what I would do if I did lose my job. I'm lucky, I suppose, not to be one of the ones being made redundant, but disappointed that I'm not going to be able to just go off somewhere and just take time out to breathe and sort of reset my life.

I've never been to the Netherlands and my vision of fresh air, windmills and tulips is probably completely inaccurate, and also I'd be going on my own and a month is probably too long to spend all alone, but too short to make new friends while I was there. Also the sensible thing to do if I was made redundant would be to immediately start job hunting, not run off to another country.

So I know it was something that was probably never going to happen anyway, but still feeling kind of sad that it definitely won't.

Does anyone else have random whims or daydreams that you know you shouldn't or can't do, and you're not even sure why you want to, but now you've had the idea you really, really want to do it?

I wanted to stay in another country for a few months so I sold my home, quit my job and went. If you want to do it, do it.

I will probably never be able to afford a place again but I don’t regret it for an instant. To be fair I also treated myself to a few more trips and things I wanted to do and I didn’t have to work for a year.

But life is short, if you can afford to do it, do it.

I’m a bit mental though. If I was a guy I would perhaps have been tempted to have rented a little boat and gone treasure hunting somewhere far flung with the last of my bucks xD but I feel as a woman that’s too dangerous. So I’m just eeking it out allowing me to work part time now for a bit longer.

If you don’t have kids and can save up enough then - have at it!

The fuck are we here for anyway if not to actually live?
Quit the job and go.

I want to live in Italy for a full calendar year. Thanks to Brexit, my kids and my finances, it is super unlikely to happen but I still dream about it as a possibility in retirement.

Love the spirit of this thread, sorry to those who cannot do these things for unavoidable reasons, I hope you all get to make more great memories anyway, even if it isn't these ones. I started planning a sabbatical for 4-5 years time with Chat GPT (London to Mongolia over 6 months as much by land as possible). I need to save a significant amount first and maybe it won't happen. I am having so much fun though, working out each leg and what is important to me/not important. The other day I was refining the France leg and just thought, actually I am going to do this in May. I have some niche interests for Paris then Rouen and then will ask DH to join me in Marseille. Will do 10-14 days. I think what I am trying to say, is maybe I won't ever get to Mongolia, and maybe OP you won't live in the NL for a whole month, but I'll get to tick off France. Sometimes it is small steps.

I really want to live in Svalbard. I'm completely obsessed. Problem is I'm autistic and I'll be completely obsessed with something else in six months time so...

When you retire, why not take up house/pet sitting? Then you can look for a month long cat sit in the Netherlands 🇳🇱
