How much spending money for a week away in the uk?

Family of 5 accommodation is paid for.

How much spending money would you need?
Days out will include some attractions and meals out and evening drinks at the site bar.

Look at the attractions online, to see how much they cost.

Meals out - £30-50 per adult depending on restaurant, 1-3 courses, and alcohol (which always bumps the cost up) , children - £10 per child, ( or there could be free child offer)

Cafes - factor in that you’re likely to stop at cafes. Drinks could cost up to £20. If you include cake, then factor in another £3-5 per person. Sandwiches could be £5-8 per person.

Drinks - difficult to say

Icecreams - for five people, could be £10-20 from icecream can

JoyousWriter · 15/07/2026 15:52

To the poster above - how much do you drink?!

Bjorkdidit · 15/07/2026 16:21

How much can you afford?

How good are you at finding deals?

How long is a piece of string?

MiddleAgedDread · 15/07/2026 16:24

depends on so many things......is your accommodation self catering so you're just going to have a couple of meals out in a week or hotel where you'll be eating out every meal? How old are the kids as younger ones sometimes get into attractions for free. How much you eat / drink. If you take picnics or buy ice cream every day......

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 15/07/2026 16:26

In my village in Cornwall you could have a nice burger and chips to take away for £8, or much better quality for £15, seafood pasta for £17 in the pub or £25 in a restaurant, 4 course tasting menu for £75- it depends which restaurant you go to!

VividDeer · 15/07/2026 16:26

I spent a fortune last year. But we like nice food and ate out every day- and could afford it.

JohnnieFedora · 15/07/2026 16:29

£50pp per day
Minimum

Meals out will come in around £100 with drinks for 5. Maybe more.

Attractions - reckon on £20pp

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 15/07/2026 16:29

It's very hard to put a figure on it. Have as much as you can afford to spend during the holiday available, and hope you bring some of it home.

mindutopia · 15/07/2026 16:33

I mean, how much do you spend and how much does stuff cost that you want to go to?

I’d do my usual weekly shop, with some extras for being on holiday, so I’d guess it might come to £200. I don’t drink alcohol, but dh might buy some drinks from the supermarket.

We do a lot of mostly free days out, so beach or a walk, which might cost £6 for parking and £16 for ice creams, so £22.

Attractions, I’m cheap so I would be hard pressed to pay more than £15 per adult for something, kids £8. We do a lot of NT stuff as have a membership so that is free. So maybe £50 each for a couple days.

We’d eat out maybe 3 times, probably £80-100 per meal, which would be the most expensive bit. We aren’t much for going out drinking, so dh might have a few pints somewhere and I’d have a lime and soda. Maybe £260-300 total on food and drink.

Maybe £700-800 based on the above, but in reality, I don’t think we’d have so many non-free days out and we probably wouldn’t really eat out so much, because our recent self-catering holiday definitely didn’t cost this much.

It’s self catering and one child is only 2, the other 2 are primary school age.
I will do a bit of a shop to stock up on snacks and breakfast but we will probably take lunch out but eat out for the main meal.

How long is a piece of string? Could be anything from £500 to £1500 or more.

When we took dc away when they were little (and we were broke) we’d do a couple of pub meals out, lots of picnics, bbqs and easy food at our accommodation, maybe one or two paid attractions but mostly beach days. There was always daily ice cream money factored in though!

A couple of years ago we had a week in Devon with teenagers and spent an absolute fortune mostly because we ate out a lot more and had drinks / coffees / snacks out. We can afford it now though so it was fine.

Overthebow · 15/07/2026 17:08

We’re a family of 4 and days out always seem to be £100+ nowadays, without a meal out but including snacks and ice creams plus entry tickets. I’d budget £200 a day for the days you’re going to attractions if you’re bringing your own lunch.

motherdaughter · 15/07/2026 17:27

We diy breakfast and eat out one meal 4/6 days days. Could be beer and crisps. Could be pub lunch. Could be chippy tea. Plus maybe one excursion and a trip to the leisure centre. We probably spend 500 for 4 almost adults.

TigerRag · 15/07/2026 17:30

Where in the UK?

frozendaisy · 15/07/2026 17:37

£150 per day

some days more sone less but as a balance

we used to go caravan park by seaside one day would be running into the sea, sand castles, £10 per child in arcade and chips/ice cream out

the go to a sea world, so already more expensive and let them get something from gift shop (usually from spending money off grandparents)

across the two days £300

NameChangeScot · 15/07/2026 17:59

I mean it depends if you're eating at Lidl and Greggs or Miler and Carter and Five Guys.

To give you an indication we went away last week, 2 adults, 2 teens in the North of England, we spent:
£100 petrol (long drive).
£120 on Tesco deliver which included breakfast, lunch a few dinner some wine and beer.
£50 on a takeaway dinner
£120 pub meal
£50 fast food lunch
£75 on ice cream, drinks, treats
£10 arcade
= £425 on fuel and food for 4 days

Attraction/entertainment costs were already covered as part of our booking but could easily have added another £500.

So I'd say £1000

Ovoemconserva · 15/07/2026 21:52

Not dismissive of your question but there's so many variables. Are you happy to pick a coke up from the poundshop? Or must it be a bar/cafe for example. Personally I'm happy with breckfast from Lidl bakery but my friend would only go to a nice cafe.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 15/07/2026 22:26

So many variables.
We went to the zoo today - 2 adults and one child £80.60.
Parking - £5.
Packed lunch - £15.
Ice cream & coffee - £11.95.
Fuel - £20.
Fish and chips on the way home - £37.10.

hahabahbag · 15/07/2026 22:32

If you are self catering breakfast and lunch then I’d budget £25 an adult in a tourist type restaurant more if you are drinking alcohol. Clubhouse bars i guess are £6 a pint

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · 15/07/2026 22:41

I would say £1000.

OneNewEagle · 15/07/2026 22:41

£100 per day. thats what we budget for and that’s the amount we take. Some days we spend nothing as eat from the caravan go for free walks etc. others a day out or a meal out. We usually spend a lot less than this.

Or is the OP the Mumsnetter who keeps complaining how expensive days out are, claiming to have spent hundreds on 'nothing much' during weekend breaks but when pressed admits to buying things like £19 slices of cheesecake from a Michelin starred destination dessert restaurant and something else similarly high end that I can't remember.

Ohhh the weekend in thread. That was a funny one.

BacksToTheFuture · 16/07/2026 06:36

Why do you need to know in advance, it's not like the olden days when you had to change your money to go abroad and couldn't get any more

Surely you take each day as it comes and spend according to what you can afford. After day 1 you know what things cost of the place your staying

PShelp · 16/07/2026 06:49

We just did a week away and spent £150 at Morrisons which covered picnic lunches and snacks, and 5 meals at home, and a further £400 on two meals out, admission to things, extra fuel, ice creams, etc etc etc. So if you're eating out most nights I'd probably budget £1000.
