What’s your thoughts on this? I personally hate it as find it too loud and it just adds to my annoyance but know some people love it.

I'd never really noticed it until I had a baby. Now I feel like it's completely overwhelming and unnecessary- for both me and him!

Lomonald · 13/07/2026 10:04

I haven't heard supermarket music in years I was in 2 different supermarkets over the last few days they didn't have music.

heartsinvisiblefury · 13/07/2026 10:05

That’s exactly it! It is overwhelming, I walked out of a shopping centre last week because I’d just got off a bus sat near someone playing loud music and then I walked into it again 😭😭

The Co op and Asda both play it and play it loud

It's why I don't use Asda.

StuckOnYouuu · 13/07/2026 10:07

They play it where I am, it doesn't usually bother me too much unless it’s something inappropriate like swear words or overly sexual (yes im talking about my local coop 🤢)

Ah yes, we used a big Asda when the kids were younger for the monthly shop I didn't mind the music, I sometimes go to a smaller Asda near me and they don't play music.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2026 10:16

Tesco have started to do it now. I don’t mind music though.
Morrisons tend to play older tracks. Asda has it blaring out though , ‘radio Asda ! ‘ and their latest deals read out too.

ThePeppyOpalScroller · 13/07/2026 10:23

I was on holiday in Mauritius a while back and there was a DJ in the supermarket, at 2pm on a Wednesday! It was fantastic! Shoulder bopping to A-Ha while standing in the queue..

UrbanSoul · 13/07/2026 10:24

I like it. I often sing along.

Lomonald · 13/07/2026 10:26

Now i am doubting myself maybe my supermarkets do play music and I am just tuning it out🫤

shellyleppard · 13/07/2026 10:34

They have a radio playing in the doctors surgery.... really annoying noise!! Our supermarket has music playing, I'm the annoying person who always sings along Lol

True story.

Hearing a nice tune in Wilkos one day, I ventured to ask at customer services what it was. A nice young lady told me that the in store entertainment was piped in from their head office, and they had no idea what was playing (the music was interspersed with adverts).

So following the advice, I emailed Wilko head office with time and date. Here is what they said [sic]

Further to my email to you yesterday, I have received a response from the company who provide us with the music in our stores which is as follows –

‘We are unable to share the entire library of songs with the public as it would breach Intellectual Property Rights. The profile and tracks are handpicked and tailored to Wilkinson’s Brand and such information is often sought-after by our competitors, who quite often try and contact us direct too. Whilst the majority of such enquiries are not genuine, some customers might be simply interested in music and in such cases we are happy to find the track they liked. In order to do this we would need the store name, date and time of visit and any supporting information about the track itself: was the artist male or female, was it an upbeat track or did it have more of a relaxed feel, can they remember any lyrics that stood out etc.’

Whilst I am unable to provide a list of the songs to you, if you are wanting information about a particular track then please contact me again and I will be more than happy to contact the company and see what I can do to assist you.

The Doctors surgery has the radio on loud and it’s usually Heart or Gold radio. Too many ads for me. At least the supermarket music is pretty low key.

LondonLass2026 · 13/07/2026 10:47

I honestly don't let that sort of thing get to me. Life's too short.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 13/07/2026 10:48

I don't even notice it.

Restaurants and bars, however... sick of coming home with a sore throat because I have to shout over shit music.

Fifthtimelucky · 13/07/2026 11:36

Music in supermarkets annoys me, especially when it’s loud. Tesco supermarkets have two “quiet” hours: 9-10am on Wednesdays and Saturdays when there is no music and the lights are dimmer. I discovered them by accident but now always go during one of those times if I can.

On a related note, There is an advert I’ve seen recently where a girl and her father (presumably) go into a supermarket and she finds the music boring and somehow links up the speakers to her own music, which she plays very loud.

Everyone in the advert seems to think this is great. I think it’s appallingly selfish behaviour!

MotherOfSoManyCats · 13/07/2026 11:46

I really like the music in my local Tesco! Its very 80s and gets a lot of us oldies singing while shopping!

Thecomfortador · 13/07/2026 11:52

I love it and if there's a song I particularly like or haven't heard in a while might quietly sing a long. But then I have radio 2 on all day at home or in the car and play music myself so it's very much a part of life for me.

hahabahbag · 13/07/2026 11:52

I sing along, makes shopping less dreary

Poppy61 · 13/07/2026 13:51

There's no need for it. I've left shops
as I am unable to gather my thoughts. Nowhere is quiet these days. Now our lovely garden centre has started blasting it out in the cafe. I like very loud music at a gig. Not when having afternoon tea.

suburburban · 13/07/2026 13:54

I prefer quiet, it can be distracting if too loud as is people jabbering on speakerphone

Felinesonmeshirt · 13/07/2026 14:10

Love loud music. Love loud dance music. Loathe it in Tesco. I often say to myself “turn it off ffs”

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2026 14:14

I asked for some loud music to be turned down once in a phone shop. I am a bit hard of hearing when it’s too loud and can’t hear what they are saying , they did it , but the minute I was gone they turned it up again lol They did admit it could be a bit too loud at times.
I don’t mind it in supermarkets though as I don’t have to interact with the staff and it’s generally not that bad.

Hotafternoon · 13/07/2026 14:18

I'm OK if it's not too loud. Morrisons is ok as they play decent songs when I've been in there.

Superdrug radio gets on my wick though, hate going in there, too intrusive .
