Supermarket Music

What’s your thoughts on this? I personally hate it as find it too loud and it just adds to my annoyance but know some people love it.

Years ago the big Asda on the Isle of Dogs (Crossharbour) used to have a traffic light night once a week. You were given a sticker on the way in - red if not romantically available, amber if potentially available and green if you wanted to go the whole Scrappy Do! To make for a more conducive atmosphere they would then play all manner of schmaltz to help you feel more seductive while browsing the aisles... I'm not even remotely making this up!

My doctors surgery have Radio 2 on very low, you can barely hear it.

Years ago when the surgery waiting room had at least 15 plus people in there every day, no music played. All you could hear was people sniffing or coughing or trying to talk quietly as we all tried to avoid eye contact.😃

Our Asda isn’t at all romantic , it grubby, not well stocked and generally the most depressing place to be in! The staff are nice , but the place could do with a facelift and a clean.
They play the Asda radio in there.

I remember when supermarkets used to play what became known as "muzak" or "supermarket music". Like the sort of music you used to hear in lifts - which was also unsurprisingly known as "lift or elevator music". It was a constant loop of very banal, soft instrumental music with no lyrics and basically nothing you'd recognise. It was designed to make the shopping experience more agreeable whilst being totally neutral. It was the butt of many jokes for years. It was only boutiques that played pop music back then.

Morrisons used to play themed music. At 11am they'd play a few 'hello' themed tunes and throughout the day, food-themed tracks: Blueberry hill, American pie, Preaches etc. Don't know if they still do.

We purposely turn it up to drown out the whining from customers. It’s the one thing we have control over unlike prices, payroll budgets etc.

As a coop employee, I like it! 🎶, I'll hum away to it at times.

I went for a drink at the local yacht club with my neighbour last night (admittedly not a supermarket and also not as posh as it sounds, the average clientele wear knitted beanies and look like Captain Birdseye) and they played an hour of Bonnie Tyler in tribute, it was bloody lovely and I think when Total Eclipse came on someone in the kitchen must have been cutting onions because my eyes got all blurry!

Crossharbour Asda wasn't romantic either, believe me. Less so when you're reaching for a cucumber and someone gives you a leering look! I'm wearing a red sticker mate, go away!!

I love that my local Morrisons plays INXS regularly.

Not in Waitrose.

I absolutely hate it. I would love to be able to afford to shop in Sainsbury (no music) but we tried it a year or so ago and the bill increased noticeably. So we reverted to Morrison with the loud, overbearing (overwhelming) deafening racket voiced by screeching females. I loathe it with all my being. I have 'pointed out' that I have never heard or know of anyone who didn't go shopping because they didn't play music, whereas there are a number (on here, anyway) who choose not to go shopping in a supermarket that does play stuff. I may be a bit autistic, because noise is a real trigger for me.

I hate it, makes me feel a bit overwhelmed especially my local coop on a Sunday when I think the teenagers must be left in charge and crank the volume up. I could cope with a bit of background noise but it’s all really intrusive. I won’t go to Asda because of it. I’ll stop going to Tesco if it starts there.

Who finds love in a supermarket anyway ?
Most of the people in our Asda you want to avoid most of the time tbh. The staff are nice , but it’s a grim shop.
They don’t even do many women’s clothes now.

Asda’s terrible for this and worse still, they start playing Christmas carols in October.

The Christmas CDs on from October is annoying.
The poor staff must be sick of it.

It really adds to the sensory overload, for me. Most supermarkets are ready full of visual clutter and strong smells and background music, which is often quite front and centre and 90% awful and tinny, makes it so much harder for be to look for what I want.

I'm usually in with DS2, who is a severely autistic adult and the racket makes him extra loud and animated. It's hard not to leave in a bad mood or even walk out without finishing.

Tesco and ASDA both do, as does Coop. M&S do sometimes. I think that one depends who is in charge.

Tesco, on a loop, bit loud, but had a moment last Christmas when, yep, they played Last Christmas, and I lip synced every word, because I’m George’s biggest fan, and he winked at me in concert once… anyway another George fan did similar and we looked at each other and simultaneously burst out laughing. It was great.

Co-Op, just has their own radio station on, where they just shout out to employers, so I zone out.

Asda, random music. Bit loud, playing the Script “Man who can’t be moved “ last time I was queuing for years at the checkout. Guy in front said, I’m not moving either “ which made me chuckle.
