Weird question…..

…anyone else have ‘irrational’ aversions to certain phrases, songs or sounds?

For example, I cannot stand nonsense word songs like “ginggang gooly gooly watcha ging gang goooo,” maybe these are real words but in a different language?

I also hate it when people say “om nom nom,” or when my husband makes the sound effects / instrumental bits in songs. I only ever sing the words / voiced parts, I won’t ever ‘sing’ the chuh chuh chuh churrr noise parts, but he does.

Manic laughter gives me the heebies. For example in Gorillaz 'feel good' or there's an advert with a chap spray painting his fence. I switch them both off. Same when they play the joker on radio 2's 10 to the top. Shudders

the80sweregreat · Today 07:54

I don’t like the joker sound on radio two either and ten to the top isn’t as good as pop master!
Not a sound, but the ad with the mouth on the forehead for gum makes me uncomfortable.

Gardenflowering · Today 08:09

High pitched singing or that “bendy singing” like on Chers do you believe in love song.
Barbie girl song type plastic, artificial not proper music type music. Have to turn off immediately.

American tv presenters who just throw every ounce of effort into every single word that they utter, they can’t converse like that ordinarily surely? They must be shattered!

You know radio adverts where at the very end they cram, at 100mph the terms & conditions.. that! I cannot bear it! I have to turn off immediately.

I used to detest the sound of my dad sneezing. I think I have heard that a lot about huge male sneezes, but it was only my dad’s!

shellyleppard · Today 08:38

@Honeysucklelane the gin gan gooley makes me think of the brownies or girl guides from the 70's/80's ?
The chewing gum one with the mouth in the forehead i really really really really really can't stand!!

shellyleppard · Today 08:39

Also people who sniff and sniff.... I offer them a tissue!! 🤣🤣

MagpiePi · Today 08:47

Magnum(?) ice cream adverts where there is a really loud and obviously artificial cracking sound when someone bites into the chocolate. I have to dive for the mute on the remote control when they come on.

Also the theme tune to the one show. 😬

walkingmyway · Today 08:48

Words… these irritate me beyond belief!

simples
Methinks

also OutKast hey ya makes me want to throw things

IAMFLUFF · Today 08:50

Someone getting the last bit of their yoghurt out of the pot at lunch. I feel like screaming it’s f*ing empty, move on!

Yes, that’s genuinely disturbing — possibly because it looks like a wound?

Vocal fry makes me want to punch people.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · Today 08:54

ATM the radio ad for Viking Cruises makes me murderous. That woman’s voice!!! Afraid to say I can often be heard to yell ‘Fuck OFF!!!!’ at the radio. (Too much faff to actually switch it off every time.)

shellyleppard · Today 08:54

@SuddenLightbulb i hear you 😆

7238SM · Today 08:55

OP- Do you have misphonia?

I don't have any strong feelings about words, but I'm not keen on 'moist' and 'gusset'.

ThatPearlSnail · Today 08:57

Loose women theme tune. I don't watch it but occasionally it'll come on if dh has left the TV on. That awful da da da da da da da da DAA DAA DAAH at the end.

the80sweregreat · Today 09:03

The smug woman who sings on the insurance ad about older people abroad. The song winds me up , so it goes on mute. The one for pet insurance with the waggy dog tails and trumpet type music.
Some tunes really grate.

DeathBanana · Today 09:51

I hate clapping. Obviously I do it, it’s the done thing but there’s something so bizarre about slapping your hands into each other. In a group.

HortiGal · Today 09:55

Whistling , hate it.
Grown women speaking in baby voices to other adults.

SourdoughSally · Today 10:04

So many!

High-pitched singing

Whitney/Mariah style warbling

Any song where it pulses loud then quiet

Bagpipes

Very British songs being sung in an American accent

Radio adverts (On the Beach is the worst)

RevengeOfTheDirtyLaundry · Today 10:08

I loathe it when you get a heavy or classic rock song covered by a woman in a slow, breathless sort of style that sounds like she's gasping it out on her deathbed. Happens a lot in adverts. I think the singing style is called 'Indie Girl'. It can fuck right off.

I know what you mean about that ad. It is really creepy and sinister, isn't it?

the80sweregreat · Today 10:38

Sorry Scotland, but I also dislike bagpipes as an instrument. I know they are popular and my late dad used to buy albums of the guards playing them!
Also not keen on trumpets.
Don’t mind a slowed down song occasionally, but often it’s too breathy and I want to speed it up to its original tempo by the end of it. At least the last but one John Lewis Christmas ad had the actual song and not a cover.

"innit" - isn't it

"Duck" - a term of endearment some use in a neighbouring County

"Snappin" - lunch

"Brew" - Hot drink
