…anyone else have ‘irrational’ aversions to certain phrases, songs or sounds?

For example, I cannot stand nonsense word songs like “ginggang gooly gooly watcha ging gang goooo,” maybe these are real words but in a different language?

I also hate it when people say “om nom nom,” or when my husband makes the sound effects / instrumental bits in songs. I only ever sing the words / voiced parts, I won’t ever ‘sing’ the chuh chuh chuh churrr noise parts, but he does.

Just remembered some god awful song at a school disco which had the lyrics Choo choo wah wah in it accompanied by a dance with thumbs out / bums out or something. That song made me want to leave the room.

Oh I definitely sing the instrumental bit, when I like the melody.

What comes to mind for me is the word ‘funky’ being used to describe a smell, or worse, someone being ‘in a funk’. I would like to know when these meanings were proposed and who approved it, because I don’t consent.

I hate it when people say yuck cheesy feet. I’ve never once smelt feet that smell like any cheese. They smelt like unclean feet not cheese.

Auditory AMSR of any kind. I had a friend that loved it, sound clips of scratching, hair being brushed, nails tapping, etc. Absolutely all of it just sent me into an instant rage.

Also tutting. Passive aggressive, patronising and insulting all at once.

I hated that AMSR trend. It sent me into a rage!

I hate people over touching objects too, Charlie Dimmock keeps doing that on Garden Rescue. My DH does it with things like bags of salad, he’ll be telling what he’s been thinking of for dinner and keep patting the sodding salad bag whilst speaking about said salad.

Sorry if there are any fans around but I can not stand James Blunt’s voice
I have to turn the radio off as soon as I hear him.

My DH does this with yogurt pots and bowls, rapidly scraps his spoon fast to get the last bits up. Drives me insane! I was brought up to be quiet and considerate, not making any additional unneccessary noises but he constantly sings lines from songs, makes loud noises when eating, blows his nose and sneezes like how I imagine a Giant would sound.

LTB 🤣🤣🤣

The song "Rude" by Magic - absolutely loathe it.

Also the words soup and meal.
My father uses both, occasionally in the same sentence and it makes me want to commit patricide.

Bendy singing made me chuckle!

Bendy singing is horrible - totally understand what you mean about Cher @Gardenflowering but for me the worst example was the oooooooooohhh in "Don't Leave Me This Way" by the Communards - sets my teeth like fingernails on a blackboard.

cherryicecreamisnice · 13/07/2026 14:43

I hate certain words beginning with W. I also hate the mouth on the forehead advert and the toothpaste advert with the women screaming.

Honeysucklelane · 12/07/2026 22:04

I definitely do, although not as bad as some people have it. My hearing isn’t as great now I’m getting old which definitely helps.

I can’t stand whistling, chewing, tapping, biting cutlery, teeth grinding, drivers drumming on the steering wheel along to music. I also hate the visual stimuli like feet twitching, legs tapping or jigging.

You are clearly my long lost twin.

Monty36 · 13/07/2026 15:24

I dislike some phrases like ‘so emotional ‘ instead of describing the emotion felt.

Not a phrase but I have an irrational dislike of men who wear slip on shoes. Sketchers, sandals and boat shoes are exempt as are old men’s shoes.

I can’t abide ‘ love shack ‘
The B 52s shouting out that song is hell. I heard an entertaining team sing it on holiday , couldn't even switch it off!

Agree. Loathe it. Straight off it goes.
Reality tv shows were the people all enter the experience screaming as each new person comes through the door (Big Brother). Why the screaming? Why? Performative shit. Any loud noises. Sudden noises. Teeth on edge noises. Bought one of those upside down Fairy Liquid bottles. The sound it makes if you push it along the wooden worktop aaaaargggh. Had to bin it. Repetitive noises like thump thump thump of a football. Loads more. I’m generally easily irritated. Edited to add: when someone puts a spoon in their mouth to eat and it scrapes on the teeth. Makes me want to knock them out.

AlwaysExtraHot · 13/07/2026 15:44

I can't stand that song Hocus Pocus, the one that's basically yodelling but by a prog band.

And there's a Spiritualized track that's got the most irritating chugging bassline and a vocal line that I think is meant to be hypnotic but which just winds me up.

I hate 'meal' too. Makes me cringe.
Also the word 'prepare'. I don't know why, but it makes my toes curl with embarrassment.

I loathe it when you get a heavy or classic rock song covered by a woman in a slow, breathless sort of style that sounds like she's gasping it out on her deathbed. Happens a lot in adverts. I think the singing style is called 'Indie Girl'. It can fuck right off.

There's a Bill Bailey routine where he strums a guitar for just a few notes and sings, 'Ooh, I'm a girl' and it's spot on. It doesn't sound like one specific song of that ilk, but it does sound like ALL of them Grin

JengaCupboard · 13/07/2026 15:55

People using pet-names or terms of endearment to address me that I don't know, such as people in shops or sales calls etc. Especially when it's men. ESPECIALLY when it's men and it's within my work setting.

Perfume adverts make me cringe. The ONLY important thing about perfume is how it smells... nothing about wafty, wanky adverts supply this information. And most of them are SO wanky.

Outdated sanitary product adverts pushing the 'women can do anything on their period' message.

You don't say, thank God you were there to tell me I can still wear white jeans and go bungee jumping.. seriously.

Sarah Champion on the radio. It's not personal, but her voice is like biting on tinfoil.

UnderThePressure · 13/07/2026 15:56

ASMR sounds really irritate me, move away from the mic!
Tapping nails on things.
Burping when people say names or words while burping. 😬
Squeaky pens on a whiteboard.
The sound of high heels on tile or concrete.
I also can't stand the phrase "play it by ear".
The song Red Red Wine.

Urgh my husband used to do that! Claimed the food was hot, I told him I was eating it as exactly the same temperature and you use your lips to take the food off not your f ing teeth.

Yes!! I’d much rather someone spread the message that we can sit around, do f all and eat ice cream on our periods because we are shedding blood from our bodies and it f ing hurts like hell sometimes. I swear the roller blading / bungee advertising bollocks was dreamt up by men because it’s such an inconvenience to them when women aren’t operating at full capacity, they had to shame us into “look! You CAN roller blade!!”

There's a current style of music that seems to use a lot of autotune. Couldn't name an artist but some kind of r'n'b. It's mostly heard blaring out of passing cars when stopped at traffic lights or in women's clothes shops. That's got bendy, slightly distorted singing that also manages to sound flat. I cannot stand it. It's like a form of torture. I would simply be unable to work in retail and have to put up with that in the workplace.

ThatPearlSnail · 13/07/2026 21:15

The word scalp needs to go. We just finished watching The Pitt and I had to leave the room during one episode because of the overuse of the word scalp. Shampoo ads are terrible offenders. Itchy, flaky scalp? 🤮

Honeysucklelane · 14/07/2026 19:11

There’s a woman on TikTok called TheWakingHat who does some strange awkward dance manoeuvres and I can’t bear watching her. It’s makes me feel so uncomfortable.

Also the lady in Deacon Blue when she’s lost in the moment with her tambourine, it gives me some sort of second hand embarrassment, I found it really off putting.

Which is mean of me, as that’s two people enjoying moving their bodies to different music, and it just gives me the biggest - I hate this word too but it describes it perfectly - ICK,

Yes, that’s genuinely disturbing — possibly because it looks like a wound?

Vocal fry makes me want to punch people.

Another vote for vocal fry.
