10 years since Brexit-would you vote the same?

I was listening to a podcast today about this, and it was really interesting. They had a group of people who voted Leave at the time, and although most of them were unhappy about how it has panned out, only one would have changed his vote if they could have voted tomorrow.
I voted remain at the time, and would do so again. The loss of freedom to travel across the EU, and work without visas is a loss, most likely not to me, but to DS who would have loved to have travelled across Europe and work his way with ease.
What would you do, and why?

I voted remain, I’d now vote leave, I think it’s a million miles better for us to be out, and a terrible mistake to try to go back in.

Why?

voted leave and yes I'd change my vote.

Appreciate your honesty, do you feel your vote was misinformed by the politicians at the time or is it just that in hindsight you can see things differently?

I don't understand your son can still travel with ease across Europe just like we always did before ?

If we’d been told the truth, I would have weighed up the benefits for either and gone for the truth (if we might have been told it).

People were told the truth, they just chose not to believe it or were too dim to realise what they were voting for.

Another infuriated remain voter who watched British pensioners who lived in Spain vote leave 'because there is too much immigration these days' - you couldn't make it up.

Farmers vote leave and then act surprised when it meant they'd no longer receive EU subsidies - no shit, Sherlock.

Leave voting fishermen annoyed that they could no longer easily sell their catch to EU countries because they'd voted to give up free trade within the EU - what did they expect?

Leave voters oblivious to the fact they'd have to pay import duty on goods ordered from the EU, or find they could no longer buy them because the seller only sold to EU countries.

People annoyed at extra passport checks and limitations on travelling to the EU - didn't think that voting to become a third country, if they even knew what this was, meant that the UK would be treated as a third country by the EU.

You can’t work with the same ease across Europe now.

Immigration also typically takes much longer as we can no longer go through the EU gates, I travel regularly for work and it always takes me longer now with a UK passport.

ParsonMaybold · 05/07/2026 21:22

I voted remain and would obviously do the same.

As this was basically throwing a huge decision over to fuckwits, there should be an IQ minimum score to be eligible to vote in any future referendums.

sesquipedalian · 05/07/2026 21:23

I voted leave, and I’d vote leave again. I’m mindful of Tony Benn’s five questions -

What power have you got?
Where did you get it from?
In whose interests do you exercise it?
To whom are you accountable?
How can we get rid of you?

The EU fails utterly on them, particularly on accountability and our ability to change/get rid of the Commissioners if we don’t like the way they’re exercising power. I’d rather have an accountable government that can make laws in our interests. We may have had some singularly useless governments since Brexit, but part of that is because they actually have to make decisions and stand by them - no more of the “Oh, we’d love to do xxxx but our hands are tied because of EU rules.”

NoEffingWay · 05/07/2026 21:24

@FatEndoftheWedgebecause to work in the EU as a British citizen you now need a work visa for each country, previously you could work in any EU country as an EU citizen. There are no such things are working holidays now, unless you work illegally!

I voted leaved and I still would.

I didn't listen to many politicians to make such a big descion
I had many reasons and on certain subjects like human slavery and sex trafficking /the black hole of corruption in Brussels and so on i did deep dives.
I covered many issues of interest to me and weighed them against positives.
It really surprises me that someone people only went skin deep on so called free movement ? There were and are so many more serious issues.

What do you feel is better about being out?

FatEndoftheWedge · 05/07/2026 21:25

And I look at the struggling mess of the EU now and I'm baffled why anyone wants to go back in!

labamba007 · 05/07/2026 21:25

Voted remain would do the same

NoEffingWay · 05/07/2026 21:27

I struggle to understand how leaving the EU would have prevented illegal immigration and people smuggling…the key word here is illegal. I don’t think human traffickers are too concerned about the law!

What did you think has improved in terms of human slavery and sex trafficking post Brexit?

If anything being outside of the EU means the UKs ability to deal with these issues across borders is more complex.

Oh yes ! Those famous lines also greatly influenced me a long with a study of past opaque government's .
I think of all the major and minor corruption that our own politicians do and I wondered how on earth id keep tabs on more layers of government even further removed !

You think the UK is struggling any less? I hardly feel like we’re booming.

UserM6 · 05/07/2026 21:29

I voted Leave and would stand by it. In the long run it’s absolutely fine. In the short term it’s been fine too. You can still live, work and trade like you can thd rest of the world.
The EU has gone from free trading block to a massive political entity.

FatEndoftheWedge · 05/07/2026 21:30

@Changingplace what are your views on the explosion of human slavery after the EU working rules were relaxed ? Do you think opening up the UK to major drugs and ocg was a good pay off for our DC to be able to travel so called freely across the EU ?

Even knowing how it has affected our economy? Can I ask what benefits you’ve seen?

In real terms, the NHS waiting times for cancer treatment, and A&E waiting times has increased, more working people are in poverty than previously, governmental agencies are cutting staff to try and claw back money. My local NHS mental health services had to save £11 million last year-mainly from staffing!

I voted remain and would do so again. I would vote to rejoin if ever given the chance.

Brexit was the biggest and stupidest act of self harm that the UK has ever committed.

You think the UK is struggling any less? I hardly feel like we’re booming.

What are your views on the UK struggling v the EU ? Do you feel the UK was an equal economic partner or maybe we match the G7 far more?
What was the point of joining up with many countries who are far far weaker and poorer than us ?
Do you feel we benefited as much ?
Do you think that maybe many countries are struggling due to mass events that occured worldnwide?
Do you feel that a huge eccomic block should have the strength to withstand these shocks more ?

user1471453601 · 05/07/2026 21:34

I read a piece where mainly remain leaning politicians were talking about the ten year anniversary.

one comment by Harriet Harman caught my eye. She worked on the remain phone lines and her take on it was that the Remain campaign talked mainly about figures and facts, while the Leave campaign talked about feelings.

now much as I'd like the world to work mainly on facts (I'm a creature of logic, not emotion) I understand that it doesn't. So a lot of people genuinely felt that the EU was not a good thing. Why that was I guess you'd have to ask a pro leave voter.

the facts show that our GDP has shrunk by leaving the EU. And logic tells me that alienating your nearest trading partner cannot be a good thing to do.

when you add in the current war in Europe (Russia's aggression in Ukrain) and the uncertainty of America's response to any aggression aimed at Europe as a whole, it's clear to me that our best bet is to cleave to Europe.
