Sending texts with your temperature and coughing updates is not appealing

dear god, I need to end this relationship

*fifties, don’t live together

I find saying in a panicked voice, "should I phone an ambulance?" gets them to realise how ridiculous they're being.

Ha! Might try it!

I am at the end of my tether with responses

just ignore them. I can't imagine a grown up sending their temperature reading! Is this a man that's expecting you to go round their minister to him until he recovers?

I think my caregiving is expected

luckily, I’ve got strong boundaries now after years of looking after people

“Sorry to hear you are unwell, I’ll leave you in peace to sleep and rest.”

StillWate · 04/07/2026 21:47

Actual temperature updates

WTF?

I agree with the taking it very seriously approach. Send back google or chat gpt ideas of what it could be (the more scary sounding the better) and tell him to call 111 or you will. Every time he messages with further updates you need to escalate until eventually you say you are going to call 999. Hopefully at some point he switches into reassuring you it's not that bad, which is your cue to say 'thank god, I'm so relieved, have a good nights sleep and speak tomorrow'. Then go out for the day tomorrow with your phone switched off.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 04/07/2026 21:48

Sounds like he has COVID. I had it for 6 weeks and it was horrible. I can't imagine having to go through it on my own. When you are feeling ill you do need a bit of sympathy.

VerifiedAccount · 04/07/2026 21:49

"Sorry you're not feeling well. I'll let you rest rather than sending lots of messages back and forth because that wont be helping. Speak to you this evening". Then ignore him.

Or

Just ignore him.

Zippidydoodah · 04/07/2026 21:51

I don’t understand your poll thingy 🤔

I will say, though, that you sound like you have the ick. There’s no coming back from the ick.

3luckystars · 04/07/2026 21:53

Is this unusual?
maybe he is actually very sick. I’d ask him if he needs medical assistance (from someone else) I think you are getting the sick ick 😂

VerifiedAccount · 04/07/2026 21:56

I'd caution against the bigging it up approach. Only because I know that the conversation with my husband would go along the following lines:

Him - I have a cold and feel awful
Me - could it be pneumonia?
Him - oh my god! Yes I have pneumonia. I knew it was far too awful to just be a cold.

Husband, a month later when he sneezes once - oh god! I have pneumonia again. I will take to my bed for a week.

Husband a year later randomly reminiscing - do you remember the first time I had pneumonia? It was the worse pneumonia anyone has ever had. You really should have called 999 for me.

I'm not completely joking when I say this.

I’ve been sympathetic

he’s been able to function and rejects seeking help

Turn your read receipts off and get on with your evening.

BreadInCaptivity · 04/07/2026 21:58

Has he put on the dressing gown of doom yet?

DierdreDaphne · 04/07/2026 22:00

Oh dear, hypochondria is not an attractive trait. I mean yes clearly he is ill, but not ill enough to need to keep reassuring you he's still alive. This is just attention seeking and a bit main charactery in its blithe assumption that you want, nay need, to know all this.

If he was properly an adult he'd know you don't need to know, and don't want to either.

If his Mum is still alive suggest he messages her instead, she's more likely to be interested 😅

bettyrubble99 · 04/07/2026 22:01

When he sends them, send him this GIF

Episode 2 Whatever GIF

Whenever exh used to be 'ill 'I'd agree wholeheartedly and usher him off to bed..
Door shut.
Job done!
Suggest he gets his rest and switch off your phone..
