I’m worried about the safety of the England fans/ team in Mexico on Sunday…

England are playing Mexico in Mexico this Sunday.

Already this tournament, there have been at least three football-related deaths in Mexico. During the last Mexican match, fans stayed outside the opposing team’s hotel jeering, keeping them awake. Also, Mexico isn’t the safest of places at the best of times.

Basically, I am concerned about the safety of this match… Anyone else?

What are the football related deaths?

GoodkneeBadKnee · 03/07/2026 20:27

Did you have the same concerns when other teams were playing there in this World Cup?

I dont know that I would call that football related

Do you know how many fesitivals and celebrations there are in Mexico all year round, I wonder how many people die in those as a regular thing?

FindingMeno · 03/07/2026 20:46

Well it's not compulsory for people to go.

CalmWriter · 03/07/2026 20:46

Do you worry about the safety of innocent citizens in Mexico who are killed every day in drug cartel or gang violence whilst going about their everyday lives?

mynameiscalypso · 03/07/2026 20:46

Mexico City is amazing, one of my favourite places in the world. I’d love to be there this weekend.

Edited

Well the deaths only occurred after Mexico’s last match so I’m not sure we had reason to be concerned before?

Not unreasonable at all, OP. But some people will definitely accuse you of being racist for caring about English fans.

Of course she does. Anyone with an ounce of empathy would.

That is why she is worried about the people going there.

MissMoneyFairy · 03/07/2026 20:55

They don't have to go

Dankanddrear · 03/07/2026 20:57

The deaths described in the BBC article are very tragic, but they were crush injuries during a crowded celebration, they weren't due to acts of violence.

Mexico does have significant problems with crime in certain areas, but it's not an incredibly place for fans to be.

PancakeCloud · 03/07/2026 22:52

I think you’re being ridiculous honestly. Wouldn’t worry about it.

Zoeeeyy · 03/07/2026 23:13

im a British female and live in the heart of Mexico City. Mexico has been nothing but welcoming to all teams. Ecuador was treated the way they were because they done the same to Mexico. Hope this helps. Also The deaths in the city although sad were not violence related either. Mexico is a beautiful country, more so than England hence why I left :)

This article covers the previous deaths:

I don't know if it’s a sign of violence exactly, but I was quite shocked to hear today that the teams playing Mexico at home had had to keep their hotels secret because locals were deliberately preventing them from sleeping. Did that happen in previous World Cups? Seems really unfriendly and almost cheating. How far would they go if they were able - maybe put something in their food?

TransportNerd · 03/07/2026 23:40

Why are you worried about a situation you're not involved in, and can't affect you?

There have been several incidences of this in the UK over the years.

Im worried about the lives and safety of the domestic abuse victims for whom having the pubs open at stupid o’clock will potentially have serious consequences.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/07/2026 02:01

Mexico, like the UK is safe in a lot of areas and lot very in others. There is gang and drug violence caused by decades of stupid policy by them and the US. We spent a wonderful time there last year. My friend just got back from Mexico City.

I'm not more worried than about fans in major US cities. Which aren't safe either.

FlapperFlamingo · 04/07/2026 02:19

Has someone that you care about gone to Mexico City OP? If not it seems overly anxious to worry about people you don’t know. There are many potential disasters - why not worry about the huge loss of life in Venezuela for example? I’m sure English football fans can assess the risk and take care of themselves if things get spicy.

Only idiots.

its not in any way racist to care about people from your country.

Yes, that's a worry!

Because not everyone only thinks about themselves.

Plenty of other threads about that already. Why cant you just engage (or not) about a different aspect?

There have been several incidences of this in the UK over the years.

Have they been reported in the media? It’s definitely the first time I’ve heard of large groups of fans organising to harm the opposing team. In the last 20 years anyway.

Wauwinet · 04/07/2026 04:47

Mexico and Ecuador have bad blood between them and what happened with their teams was personal. It was due to the political tensions between them.

In 2024 Ecuador raided the Mexican embassy after they granted political asylum to the former Ecuadorian vice president. This was obviously a massive breach of international/diplomatic relations and Mexico immediately severed all diplomatic ties with Ecuador. In spite of international condemnation for their acts, Ecuador has defended their actions and there are still tensions between the two countries.
