I’m worried about the safety of the England fans/ team in Mexico on Sunday…

England are playing Mexico in Mexico this Sunday.

Already this tournament, there have been at least three football-related deaths in Mexico. During the last Mexican match, fans stayed outside the opposing team’s hotel jeering, keeping them awake. Also, Mexico isn’t the safest of places at the best of times.

Basically, I am concerned about the safety of this match… Anyone else?

When James Bond went there that building collapsed and everything, it doesn't seem very safe to me.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 04/07/2026 15:52

I’d say I’m surprised at the unnecessary arsey replies on here, but it’s normal now 🙄

Dollymylove · 04/07/2026 20:56

It seems an odd thing to be worried about, unless you have loved ones there.
Its sad but people die all the time, through accidents, murder or natural causes

Sadly there is the risk of football related violence everywhere. It’s not been covered by many news channels but last week a Swedish man (an off duty police officer) died after being attacked in Copenhagen by opposing football fans 😢

🤣🤣🤣good place for fancy cocktails & getting laid though!!

zingally · 05/07/2026 10:45

To be really honest... I don't care.

If people are concerned, they shouldn't go. If they are there, get concerned that things are getting risky, they make a personal safety call and bow out.

No one made them go there.

I'm potentially more concerned about drunk yobbos on the streets at 4am, going home to their children and causing a ruckus.

Only idiots.

its not in any way racist to care about people from your country.

It is a bit suspect to care about random strangers from your country more than random strangers from other countries though.

No it's not!

Arlanymor · 05/07/2026 16:39

Why are people using the term 'racist'? Being English is not a 'race'! Guess what people who aren't white are also English. I really dislike this bandying about of terms that exclude non-white English people!

The racism isn’t about the English. It’s about the Mexicans. And strictly being Hispanic or Latino is an ethnicity, not a race. But the feeling that somehow Mexico (and Mexicans) is less safe than Copenhagen, when as PP said there has actually been a death there directly linked to celebrating a goal, comes from the same place as racism, yes.

There are obviously unsafe parts of Mexico. But it’s mostly a beautiful country, with lovely people. And I’d sooner be there than in parts of the UK when there’s drunk supporters, during a derby for example. I was in Croydon for the rioting after the football.

I do worry that the internet means other places are catching right wing American attitudes to Latino people.

As always, male violence is the issue people are actually concerned about, regardless of the race, ethnicity, nationality or religion of the man concerned. But that’s not surfaced.

It's 100% about male violence regardless of race, ethnicity or nationality as you say. I totally agree.

I guess I’ll be accused of sexism next then?!?

I’m in CDMX now. The atmosphere is amazing. I’m in a mixed sex/
mixed race group of pals and we’ve had nothing but friendly chatter and smiles. DH has his England shirt on and has stopped for selfies. The only worry is transport logistics nits already hard to catch a bus or uber. Any problems will be in the fan zones due to sheer numbers n

No it doesn't. It's not about being Latino! it is the behaviour of the Mexico football supporters that are causing the worry, not their race.

Oh I hope you have an amazing time!! Do you have tickets to the stadium or will you be watching in a fan zone?

How close are you to the English Teams Hotel? The security around that is/was pretty scary looking!!

How far away is your hotel? Walkable?

let us know how it all goes!

Wolfpa · 05/07/2026 19:55

Statistically Mexico City is safer than Washington DC .

We’re staying with friends who live here. Husband and other friends have tickets via England supporters’ club. Host works in World Cup logistics and is stressed we’ll probably end up watching it in the apartment fan zone. But already the atmosphere is electric. My mission today is to find a snoopy Mexico football shirt. But not sure when I’ll be able to wear it 🏆🤪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Jenasaurus · 05/07/2026 20:48

The UK's top football police chief has warned England fans to be careful in Mexico as they will be “massively outnumbered”. England's World Cup last-16 match against Mexico is set to take place in the early hours of Monday morning and has already led to tensions in Mexico City.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2026 21:02

It might be different if there was a hope in hell of England winning. But Mexico has only lost there twice in 60 years, so I think they’re safe!

But we aren't talking about safety on a regular day, we are talking about a specific event

Snoopy is my hero!! I hope you find a tshirt!! I might find a soft toy as well instead!

staying with friends sounds great! Shame you can't watch it with DH, but I'm sure you'll have a blast with the others!!

will you stay with them a few days if we don't win & go into the next location if we do go through?

I'm living vicariously!!

Im worried about the lives and safety of the domestic abuse victims for whom having the pubs open at stupid o’clock will potentially have serious consequences.

We’ve met up with friends here, some of whom will travel on to theStates. We’re traveling down to the coast in Oaxaca. We were there last week and the atmosphere was wonderful in the bars for all the games. My mum in England and not a footie fan sent me this.

Looool. This thread. Only English people could be accused of being racist for caring about other English people, probably by English people. Batshit 🤣🤣

FWC2026 · 05/07/2026 16:34

No it's not!

I consider it odd. I have the same level of empathy and respect for everyone, regardless of where they’re from. Why would I possibly care more about someone from the same place as me, that I don’t know, than anyone else?
