I’m worried about the safety of the England fans/ team in Mexico on Sunday…

England are playing Mexico in Mexico this Sunday.

Already this tournament, there have been at least three football-related deaths in Mexico. During the last Mexican match, fans stayed outside the opposing team’s hotel jeering, keeping them awake. Also, Mexico isn’t the safest of places at the best of times.

Basically, I am concerned about the safety of this match… Anyone else?

Have they been reported in the media? It’s definitely the first time I’ve heard of large groups of fans organising to harm the opposing team. In the last 20 years anyway.

It’s a tale as old as time and one major reason why Premier League teams are not permitted to stay in the same city as the team they’re playing for away games.

Do you worry about the safety of innocent citizens in Mexico who are killed every day in drug cartel or gang violence whilst going about their everyday lives?

Why would you even think that the OP isn’t FGS? 🙄

I don't know if it’s a sign of violence exactly, but I was quite shocked to hear today that the teams playing Mexico at home had had to keep their hotels secret because locals were deliberately preventing them from sleeping. Did that happen in previous World Cups? Seems really unfriendly and almost cheating. How far would they go if they were able - maybe put something in their food?

It happened to my team in a play off final in the UK. The opposition fans set off the fire alarm in the players’ hotel so they didn’t sleep the night before the match. I think they may also have made noise in the hotel (their players stayed in a different hotel).

I think we have seen excellent sportsmanship and kindness amongst fans this World Cup. I’ve found it inspiring when the media is telling us we all hate each other

knitnerd90 · 04/07/2026 05:31

It's CDMX, not Juárez. The deaths at the celebration are more concerning but hopefully police will be prepared this time.

I have a feeling the whole thing is going to be a mess. So far England have either drawn or won their games. It is very likely we will lose to Mexico because of the altitude. A lot of England fans feel this is an unfair advantage as the altitude is over 7000ft above sea level, to the point that players may be in and out of hypoxemia if they aren't careful. I am actually more worried about how England fans will react if we lose, and vice versa for Mexico.

WonderingWanda · 04/07/2026 05:56

Op the deaths you refer to were caused by a crush in a massive crowd triggered by panic when some pyrotechnics went off. https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/two-people-die-suffocation-during-world-cup-celebrations-mexico-2026-07-01/

This is incredibly sad but you are being bonkers feeling like this is some sort of Mexico specific threat. You might remember the Hillsborough disaster in the UK, 97 deaths. Or the Love Parade crush in Germany. Large crowds can be dangerous in any country.

Exactly. OP didn’t even mention any concern for the daily deaths in Ukraine or Gaza. How callous to mention concern for one group whilst omitting all other groups in the world who have it worse.

squirrelchops2 · 04/07/2026 06:29

A lot will depend on how the English fans behave.

I don’t believe this. I have seen away football club coaches entering a hotel car park in the city where they’re playing.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 04/07/2026 07:04

It's in the news the England teams hotel will have a ring of steel around it security wise. The deaths were crush deaths not violence. The altitude is a concern but as reported in the BBC some players might be impacted but some might not. It's not ideal but there are ways to deal with it.

So if it’s so commonplace why did the BBC report it as being specifically a problem for teams playing Mexico in Mexico? Racism?

GarlicBiscuits · 04/07/2026 08:15

Wow! This thread is batshit! 😂

im a British female and live in the heart of Mexico City. Mexico has been nothing but welcoming to all teams. Ecuador was treated the way they were because they done the same to Mexico. Hope this helps. Also The deaths in the city although sad were not violence related either. Mexico is a beautiful country, more so than England hence why I left :)

Thanks for your insight. Are you going to the game?

There were riots in Paris when PSG won the Champions League a few weeks ago - 1 person died.

Would you therefore be concerned about British football fans going to Paris?

No, probably not. So stop whinging.

Of all the countless people in the world experiencing extreme, inescapable danger, not of their own choosing, you’re worried about football fans who have chosen to be at the World Cup ? 🙄

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/07/2026 09:00

I can't see it being much more dangerous than the US cities hosting?

WeddingInvitation · 04/07/2026 09:06

Stayed in Mexico City last year for a week, I could live there, it’s a fascinating city, really green with trees everywhere. Great food. Jealous off and there. There was a huge political demonstration when we were there, the only worry I had was getting back to the hotel in an uber as it was so busy, not the crowd itself.

blankcanvas3 · 04/07/2026 09:14

DH is there right now for the game and he says everybody is lovely and so welcoming, even more welcoming than the people were for the games in the USA. He sent some videos last night of the bar he was in, and the mexico fans and the english fans were all singing together whilst watching the games that were on.

What a weird thing to worry about

knitnerd90 · 04/07/2026 14:04

CDMX has a homicide rate lower than some US cities but still twice that of NYC.

Other cities are much more violent. Mexico occupies multiple slots in the global top 10.

How many of those homicides were of English football supporters? I bet there’s a 0% rate of that.

Frankly, this thread seems racist. The Mexicans have been nothing but wonderful hosts. Unlike the Americans.

Anyone who follows football seriously would be a bit worried. After the way Liverpool fans were treated I’d be very concerned about going. And I’m an Everton fan, so hardly one to side with the reds!

Theres loads of places it’s a bit risky to go as a football fan, and still more where it is actively dangerous. Fans suffocating to death in a celebration is incredibly worrying and anyone downplaying those deaths ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Really? Because Ecuador have made an official complaint and security around the England hotel has been increased due to the disruptive behaviour of some Mexican fans. Not all of them, of course.
