Has anyone used gluten free madeleines instead of ladyfingers in tiramisu?

Has anyone used Madeleines in a tiramisu?

I have people coming round and one is celiac. I really want to make tiramisu as the main course is Italian but unless I buy 2 packs of gluten free lady fingers (definitely don't need that many) I'm struggling to find them in smaller quantities. I can l, however buy gluten free Madeleines which I'm thinking could be an ok alternative?

Don't know about gf, but dd made it with muggle ones and it was ok.(ironically as I am coeliac) You could also use scharr chocolate marble cake instead.(and faint at the price)

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 03/07/2026 19:46

Why don’t you buy the bigger quantities of ladyfingers and then use the rest to make a trifle for next week/weekend? Or any other dessert recipe that requires ladyfingers.

BirthdayTrash · 03/07/2026 19:50

I make the Nigella version from her Xmas book and make microwave chocolate almond flour sponges as the cake part. I can dig out the sponge recipe if you like. It’s a lot nicer than it sounds!

Yes!
This is exactly what I use.
Coeliac here.
Cut the GF madeleines in half.
Drench them in cold strong coffee and marsala.
No-one can tell the difference.
And super easy/quick.

I made it with slices of Schar gluten free marble cake and it was divine!

Schlar gluten free marble cake currently in Morrisons at £3.30 but other places it’s £20 plus!

Plump82 · 03/07/2026 20:31

£20 for cake!! Unfortunately I don't live anywhere near a Morrison's.

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I would make an extra dessert the following week but I'm actually dieting and on wli so I'd rather avoid that! The tiramisu is going to be individual ones so can make myself a mini one!

@BirthdayTrash could you share the recipe so I have options - thank you!

Lady fingers in a tiramasu? That's new to me.any cake will do I think and be better than lady fingers.

tonyhawks23 · 03/07/2026 20:37

Talking of tiramisu have you tried the pistachio ones from co-op they are amazing.

What?? I bought it in Tesco or Sainsbury. Never seen it for £20 anywhere

Beachbeach · 03/07/2026 20:47

I see the Schar marble cake around all the time. Try Asda

Plump82 · 03/07/2026 20:52

I'll pop in to Asda. I normally do Tesco who don't seem to have it. Pistachio tiramisu sounds absolutely delightful! Quite glad we also don't have a co-op as that could be dangerous! 😂

I use Mrs Crimbles’ madeleines and my tiramisu is fab, though I say so myself

Carthorses · 03/07/2026 20:58

Ocado have gluten free marble cake, it's occasionally on offer at less than £3.30. Also gluten free madeleines

Plump82 · 03/07/2026 21:14

It's the Mrs Crimbles ones I've added to my shopping! @PrimeSeason would you share your recipe?

@Plump82 I've made this recipe with GF madeleines and it went down a treat with our coeliac guest and tasted just as good as the non GF version (once you have a bottle of Marsala in the cupboard there's a strong incentive to make it again, and again, and again 😁): https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/best-ever-tiramisu

Don't skimp on the chocolate quality - the 70% cocoa dark chocolate tastes better than the cheap stuff.

Best ever tiramisu

Make our classic tiramisu recipe. This super-simple Italian dessert actually benefits from being made ahead, allowing all the lovely flavours to mingle

Thanks for this recipe link. Think I'll just stick to the Madeleines as I can definitely get them and good back feedback on using them on here. 😊

Honestly do just use the GF Madeleines. No need to look for anything else. I make a huge tiramasu monthly using these and it tastes amazing. Did you see my earlier message?

Plump82 · 04/07/2026 08:17

@Yope I did - thank you! It seems like the easiest option. I'm assuming they'll work just as well as individual portions.

I made exactly this about a month ago. It was Becky excell I think who recommended the gf mrs crumbles Madeleines for tiramisu. I was worried that they would disintegrate but it was delicious and none of my friends knew the difference. I sliced them lengthways.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/07/2026 08:45

There are so many variations on Tiramisu and everyone says they are the best Grin
I like the BBC Good Food recipes generally but noted their first ingredient is double cream , which I was told (in Rome , with a note of horror) should never be in a tiramisu .
It is mascarpone , eggs ( yolks in a ^bain marie* , whites whisked ) good coffee , Marsala , then your flavourings etc.

I would try it but only I would eat it .

Pistacheeo · 04/07/2026 08:51

Yes. They work really well. I use the Mrs Crimbles ones (lady spoon face on packet), large sainsburys and waitrose have them.

Really want someone to magic up a cup of tea and GF madelaine for me in bed now.

hahabahbag · 04/07/2026 08:55

Must make tiramisu now! I’m not gf so can cheat and buy one from Lidl, surprisingly good for the cheap price

Plump82 · 04/07/2026 09:44

I'm definitely not skilled enough to bake them! I love cooking and will give most things a bash but always go for the easy dessert options!
