Things I didn't know were that fucking expensive

I am happy to admit we are virtually the modern equivalent of peasants but it blows me over when I find out the cost of things that I had previously never considered.

Front doors is todays example, nearly a grand for the most bog standard door, I fear we shall just have to live with the leaky one for now!

Make me feel better, what did you not know was that expensive or maybe I am just dense!

The best olive oil is from Aldi.

this is true - and Balsamic vinegar

Glasses - as in spectacles. I got an estimate for varifocals that also react to sunlight so I didn't expect them to be cheap but £780?! Ridiculous.

I got two pairs of top quality varifocals, including one light reactive pair for £400 at Specsavers

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2026 04:24

Everything has shot up in price so much and getting any work done to the house runs into hundreds and thousands. It is depressing.

Winefride · 02/07/2026 05:15

The price of a head of lettuce in M&S foods was quite shocking over the weekend. Think I'll do without lettuce until a lottery win and spend my money on wine!

our old door we more or less barricaded in winter or March when the wind was howling it was so ill fitting
my Dad fixed a sort of plastic plate along the door so that when it closed the gap
was covered
it looked bloody awful
one day in a charity shop I spied a really heavy curtain, red with gold swirls,
huge, lined, well made, new, price £20. reason for donating unknown

we bought a Swish curtain rail which bent around the hall wall on the hinged
side, so when the curtain is not closed it is against the wall and doesn’t hinder
the door opening.
what a difference it made! it looks very expensive, rich glowing colours
through the winter it muffled noise from outside, absorbed the draught from
the letter box, made the small hall cosy warm and quiet,
we used the side door through thewinter and kept the curtain closed, only opened
it occasionally to check for mail
now it is down for summer the door looks naked

My granny always had a curtain for the front door. DIL has two big glass side panels either side of the front door found it cold in the hall so put up curtains either side and draws them in the winter. Makes the hall cosier and more attractive.

My DD has myopia so we have to pay £200 for her glasses, the NHS don’t cover it.

On the flip side and totally different but I paid a guy £60 yesterday to sort my pigsty of a garden out. It took him 4 hours, I couldn’t believe he only charged 60. I offered more but he refused. So happy with the results.

I spent all last night regretting getting new glasses, varifocals (because age 😭) and transitions lenses, frames were £100, eye test was £25, total £175, I nearly fell over! How on earth have you spent nearly £800?!

Mine were £830. When you have very bad eyesight, astigmatism in both eyes, need good quality varifocals and need to wear them all the time, it adds up. I reused my frames. I do not use a high street opticians, as they have not served me well in the past. Apart from D and A, but they are long gone. Hoping I do not need a new prescription next month, as I'm unable to afford it again so soon.

Any kind of emergency call out. Particularly when it's something urgent and everyone tells you they can't come out for three months.

I had a leak on my immersion tank - every local plumber told me they might manage to get to me in six to eight weeks time, meanwhile water is pissing all over the bathroom and through the floor. Finally had to ring one of those 'guaranteed to come in one day' people who charged me £800 to do a ten minute job.

I think this wins. My god!

MagpiePi · 02/07/2026 09:26

Mars Bars type sweets.

I very rarely buy them and in my head they should be about 50p but I was in Sainsburys yesterday and they were £1.20.

It is ridiculous when you can buy a pack of four for just over £2 or a bag of four massive cookies for about the same price. No wonder there is an obesity crisis.

I feel your pain - extreme short sight, astigmatism in both eyes, varifocals and lenses that need thinning, plus I have a small head so most frames don't fit me.

No, I am not buying online or buying very cheap lenses. The difference in quality between even the most expensive Specsavers lenses and the better quality mid range lenses from my local, fabulous independent optician is incredible and makes a huge difference.

People with standard sized heads and standard long/short sight don't get it.

Round our way, you have to pay if you want the council to empty your green bin (garden waste). Obviously, it used to be done for free. When they introduced payment for the service, it was something like £30 a year per bin. There was much griping about it because it used to be free, but ultimately, I felt £30 a year wasn't too much. But we have a large garden and actually have 3 green bins so that made it £90 a year. Still ok. The cost has gone up a small bit over the years. The other day, I had to renew my subscription. I was thinking it would be somewhere between £120 and £160. No, it is currently £75 per bin so £225! That, to me, is extortionate.

Wow our green wheelie bin charge is £46 this year, collection fortnightly. It's run by a private company though not the council.

Surely with a garden that size and doing that much gardening, you make space for a compost bin and (probably) have use for the compost.

Beamsss · 02/07/2026 13:11

I have recently replaced faded 25yo custom made curtains in a few rooms in my house. I got them from Dunelm and sewed two pairs to together/shortened them myself as needed. I think they look decent quality and a fraction of the cost of custom made (or even buying the fabric to make myself) although still seemed like quite a lot of money.

Thanks, yes, we have 2 big compost heaps too. But yes, I am thinking I could make room for a couple more and reduce my bin usage. There is always a need for a bin though, for woody stuff, unless I start doing bonfires (not the most popular option with the neighbours, I imagine).

you might consider leasing?

No way that’s even more expensive. Plus mileage for work is far too high.

I have varifocals, astigmatism which is worsening in both eyes, 4.25 shortsighted in one eye, worse in the other. I'm lost without my glasses!

Yes that’s my partners work. His car broke down on the way home miles from home s month ago, it’s been a nightmare. He used to get a company car but then ten years ago he was given a fortnight to hand the company car back and buy a car that matches their criteria….costing us 12k for second hand. so we had to put off buying our first home for two years as that was our deposit savings. This time the 3k repairs were our emergency boiler savings.

Blimin work cars…I’m in the same little old car trundling along throughout as we can’t afford to buy me a better reliable one.

cars are not a good topic with me lol

@CalmWriter I was estimating that in my head for our replacement but by the time I have added on new locks, hinges, post box etc etc it was over £900 I was shocked!

Can you not recycle the door furniture from your existing door?

I have the same problem, with a small head/face. I buy frames made for teenagers.
Doesn't make the lenses cheaper though, does it! 🤓
