Things I didn't know were that fucking expensive

I am happy to admit we are virtually the modern equivalent of peasants but it blows me over when I find out the cost of things that I had previously never considered.

Front doors is todays example, nearly a grand for the most bog standard door, I fear we shall just have to live with the leaky one for now!

Make me feel better, what did you not know was that expensive or maybe I am just dense!

Replacement car keys. I've found a place that can do it for £120, which seems a lot to me, but the dealer wanted £285!

Quooth · 01/07/2026 17:37

Glasses. Get your eyes tested on the high street and use the prescription to buy online for a fraction of the price.
Or go to Asda who have a good choice and don't charge extra for varifocals.

Sofas. Look for a sofa factory outlet shop. You have to get it transported but I've done this and my adult DC have bought brand new sofas the same as in the big shops but at factory prices.

Golden Retreivers!

Plenty of beautiful dogs looking for love in rescue centres and several that specialise in golden retrievers. Giving one of them a loving home would be priceless.

maras2 · 01/07/2026 17:40

Cigarettes.
I stopped smoking about 40 years ago as it was so expensive.
I wonder who can afford it now at about £16 for 20. Shock

Seawolves · 01/07/2026 17:41

Anything to do with levelling the playing field for those with a disability. My small person's wheelchair that allows him to access the woods, off road footpaths, the beach etc cost me close to £5k.

Bloody hell!

The older one gets the more one finds oneself saying things like:

" I remember when first class stamps were 7p"

Same 🤣 6½p and 8½p

I haven't found an online place that can cope with my prescription as I have astigmatism, and the online prescription-input systems don't seem to allow for this; I don't suppose you can recommend anywhere can you? 🤞

Kitchen bins. Heading for £200 some of them. Admittedly not a regular buy, but still.

I was going to say this too, anything other than a plastic swing bin appears to be in the £60+ mark 😲

I'll add labradors, my dearly beloved girl was £650 13 years ago, health tested parents, KC the lot, now I need to sell a kidney.

It's so difficult getting a dog from a rescue though - as we found out.

CURTAINS

RampantIvy · 01/07/2026 14:13

Our council charges £28 for collecting two large items such as sofas @LoafofSellotape

What!! Only £28 😮. We are £45 !!

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 01/07/2026 17:47

Putting up a few curtain poles (poles already bought). Big time underestimated the cost!

What are the actual costs? Materials or labour?

Gatekeeper · 01/07/2026 17:53

DashItAll · 01/07/2026 16:25

In my mind they are still 21p, and second class are 19p!!

Mine as well!

If they charge too much they will end up spending money on picking up items that have been fly tipped instead. They are being realistic.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2026 20:05

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2026 14:48

Ours charges £100 and you have to wrap it so it is water tight and leave it outside yo be picked up..at some point. We had to pay £250 for removal and that was the cheapest quote!

That's ridiculous. Do you have a big problem with fly tipping?

DashItAll · 01/07/2026 14:53

Stamps - bought a book of 8 first class the other day. £14!!

Yes! They cost more than an actual proper book you can read!

Buying even plain curtains for a non-standard window always makes me wince compared to the price of ready-made ones.

This is so frustrating! Our windows are over 3m wide, approx £500 a pair 2 windows this side) so I've got 4 curtains up at a window and they're also too long cos it cost far less!

Private dental treatment. I knew it was expensive but not quite how much.

I'm lucky enough to have had an NHS dentist for 40 years but they would clearly prefer paying patients and will only do the bare minimum. They have booted my adult DC off the NHS list altogether.

I needed a crown at the front and they told me the NHS would not pay for a white one (still find this hard to believe) That cost me £750 without a root canal.
Then £900 to fix a failed root canal.

DH has taken to describing the cost of things as ¼ of a tooth or ½ a tooth.

I have a white crown NHS, I got it done free while I was on mat leave and it would have only been £250 if I'd had to pay!

I spent all last night regretting getting new glasses, varifocals (because age 😭) and transitions lenses, frames were £100, eye test was £25, total £175, I nearly fell over! How on earth have you spent nearly £800?!

I didn't. Got quote. Staggered out.

Gotback · 01/07/2026 20:45

Bloody wish I had. I knew the frames were £80, but crumbs, another £90 on top wasn’t in my plan. I couldn’t find a pair I liked as much as my current ones. I should have just gone home!

Yeah, I know that and you know that but North Lanarkshire Council are a shower of bampots

WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself · 01/07/2026 20:51

Curtains! Especially decent curtains. I was agog 30 years ago and I’m agog now.

footballsizedballofwool · 01/07/2026 20:57

My bed.
It's a single sized nursing home style bed so can be adjusted in height, reclined, head lifted, feet lifted. I also have a pressure mattress on it because pressure sores and all of that. I was told I needed one for clinical reasons but the NHS in my area would only provide them for end of life patients.
£3270.

My wheelchair.
Because I can 'technically' walk (PIP assess me as being unable to walk for more than one metre.... ) the only wheelchair I was eligible for was a basic, small wheeled, pushed by someone else chair. Despite being assessed and being told that I needed a very specific powerchair. £8800. Oh and another £650 a year later when I needed a pressure relief cushion because f***g pressure sores again. Was also assessed and told what I needed. However because I don't use my NHS chair (who'd want to use something that actively damages their health and strips them of all mobility) the NHS wouldn't provide the cushion they said I needed.
