Things I didn't know were that fucking expensive

I am happy to admit we are virtually the modern equivalent of peasants but it blows me over when I find out the cost of things that I had previously never considered.

Front doors is todays example, nearly a grand for the most bog standard door, I fear we shall just have to live with the leaky one for now!

Make me feel better, what did you not know was that expensive or maybe I am just dense!

Private dental care for a child because the NHS dentist we see are utterly shite.

Trains! Some fares are multiples of the cost of flying.

Always shocks me when I look up where I'm going.

Agree about front doors. I ended up sanding and repainting ours - looks much better now.

PenelopeJoanSterling · 01/07/2026 14:10

this is why the economy is not suitable for modern society, when its all run for profit but not enough wages can be paid to workers for then using for different services etc

CalmWriter · 01/07/2026 14:10

Ours was £350 but it’s a very basic white, composite door. Secure and draft proof, nothing fancy.

I’ve seen some for close to £3000!

RampantIvy · 01/07/2026 14:11

Also agree about external doors. We have just had our front door, back door and side door into the garage replaced. The cost is staggering.

LoafofSellotape · 01/07/2026 14:11

The removal of an old sofa when buying a new one!!

RampantIvy · 01/07/2026 14:13

Our council charges £28 for collecting two large items such as sofas @LoafofSellotape

HairsprayBabe · 01/07/2026 14:15

@CalmWriter I was estimating that in my head for our replacement but by the time I have added on new locks, hinges, post box etc etc it was over £900 I was shocked!

You are not naive - I’m quite sensible and the price of front doors shocks me!

Chopping back a tree is also alarmingly expensive where I live. When I sat back to think about it I the. appreciated there is skill/safety, insurance, equipment and disposal as well as time. But somehow I thought £150 seemed fine but for that you might get a hedge trimmed. Trees are many hundreds.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/07/2026 14:24

Buying even plain curtains for a non-standard window always makes me wince compared to the price of ready-made ones.

WouldYouLikeToSwingOnAStar · 01/07/2026 14:25

Golden Retreivers!

Pistacheeo · 01/07/2026 14:26

Garden fences. Silly money.

HairsprayBabe · 01/07/2026 14:27

@MrsDroughtFire yes my parents had a tree fall in the garden last year and the cost was wild to sort it out
@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo anything custom is £££ that's why my living room curtains don't quite fit haha

I’m awaiting an estimate for a new kitchen window.

I know it’s going to be horrendous.

Our council picks items up for free now. Usually a months wait though

SNESRainbowRoad · 01/07/2026 14:28

Train fare. We wanted to take the kids somewhere this holiday but it’s just too much money.
The cost of paving slabs is also abominable now compared to 10 years ago.

HairsprayBabe · 01/07/2026 14:30

@AnAutumnCrow our front windows could probably do with being replaced but they are non standard size and we may have to sell one of the children to replace them eventually

Private dental treatment. I knew it was expensive but not quite how much.

I'm lucky enough to have had an NHS dentist for 40 years but they would clearly prefer paying patients and will only do the bare minimum. They have booted my adult DC off the NHS list altogether.

I needed a crown at the front and they told me the NHS would not pay for a white one (still find this hard to believe) That cost me £750 without a root canal.
Then £900 to fix a failed root canal.

DH has taken to describing the cost of things as ¼ of a tooth or ½ a tooth.

FishPie2 · 01/07/2026 14:32

Door Locks. My french window lock broke and had to replace the unit on one side only. It has a turn mechanism now not a key. Not much change out of £300. Couldn't believe when only a few weeks later its twin upstairs did exactly the same so had to have that replaced so almost £600 for 2 new locks. Thank goodness I don't have any more to break.

Gotback · 01/07/2026 14:32

Glasses - as in spectacles. I got an estimate for varifocals that also react to sunlight so I didn't expect them to be cheap but £780?! Ridiculous.

HairsprayBabe · 01/07/2026 14:44

@Gotback DS5 wears glasses and even though they are NHS "free" by the time I have paid for the lens thinning etc it's over £100

Ours charges £100 and you have to wrap it so it is water tight and leave it outside yo be picked up..at some point. We had to pay £250 for removal and that was the cheapest quote!
