Things I didn't know were that fucking expensive

I am happy to admit we are virtually the modern equivalent of peasants but it blows me over when I find out the cost of things that I had previously never considered.

Front doors is todays example, nearly a grand for the most bog standard door, I fear we shall just have to live with the leaky one for now!

Make me feel better, what did you not know was that expensive or maybe I am just dense!

I would hope an external door would last upwards of 20 years, even a cheap one? So a per year cost isn’t all that much. Ours has been in 20 years now, the seal needs replacing on the back door but the doors themselves are still good.

If it is leaking I would look at getting someone to repair it rather than replace the whole thing.

Goldenbear · 01/07/2026 15:50

Car break pads, seems an elastic price quoted and then they query their very own reasoning i.e do we need them at all!

PetulaGordeno · 01/07/2026 15:50

Women’s razor blades. WTAF.

Cushions! It always amazes me the price of cushions. Even the most basic😳 And yes I agree about tree cutting. My DH and FIL cut down our large tree in the back to save costs... DH cut into separate piles, blocks/branches/twigs and leaves and it cost us £350 to have the twigs and branches taken away to local amenity by a man with a van! Shook I was!

Edited

If you advertise locally people will always take wood for log burners, they are usually happy to collect it as well.

Featherhorn · 01/07/2026 15:59

Furniture. Having always had hand-me-downs, and bits off Freecycle, it's astonishing.

Garden furniture - same

TheBlueKoala · 01/07/2026 16:01

Vegetables and fruit. Garlic.

Zoopet · 01/07/2026 16:02

Vet bills.
Just been quoted £8,000 for my cat's treatment/ x ray/ possible op for a sore paw.
Thats insane and despite having premier insurance I can't hope to pay it, with a ,£2,000 per insurance claim cap.🤢

WeddingInvitation · 01/07/2026 16:03

God yes, doors, so expensive. especially post covid.

Stamps - I mean wtf?

15 years ago I bought a 6x8 garden shed and had it delivered and set up for £600 all in.

I priced up a new one - and it was going on £1500 now.

Outdoor paving and patio work. Just always seems hugely expensive.

concertinacornflake · 01/07/2026 16:07

Basically everything?

Agree glasses are always a shock.

I can't believe the cost of pretty basic secondhand cars.

igelkott2026 · 01/07/2026 16:08

I was shocked at the cost of doors too. It's just a bit of wood!

Fitting them is a skilled job and time-consuming so I expect to pay a lot for that, but not the doors themselves.

Also getting rid of rubbish with the council. There's no consistency with price. Back in the day we wanted to get rid of the wood from an old built-in wardrobe. Council wanted over £70 to take away the wood but would have charged half that for up to 5 fence panels, which are a lot more bulky.

Stamps - bought a book of 8 first class the other day. £14!!

Bloody hell!

The older one gets the more one finds oneself saying things like:

" I remember when first class stamps were 7p"

HotGrapefruit · 01/07/2026 16:12

Olive oil - seems to cost more than a nice bottle of wine now.

Steak - I KNOW it's the good stuff, but I swear it's going up about £2 a week.

I bought 2nd class today and nearly fainted at the checkout at the price.

I used 2 of them to post birthday cards and the other six will have to last till Christmas so I can use them on the few cards I post to long distance addresses.

Screamingabdabz · 01/07/2026 16:15

Haircuts. Forget anything fancy like highlights, it’s extortionate.

And yes, spectacles. You just get mugged by the high street opticians if you are unfortunate to need them.

SirChenjins · 01/07/2026 16:19

I am still reeling from the cost of replacing a broken freezer drawer for our fridge freezer - £80!!! For a plastic tray Shock I spent ages looking online because I couldn't believe the cost of it, but nope - 80 effing quid.

Lobsterteapot · 01/07/2026 16:20

Dying!
Organising a “paid for” funeral at the moment and there is still nearly 4k of costs to find.
Opening a grave - 1k, Wake - 1k, Flowers £650, Existing gravestone removal £650, Updating gravestone £4 a letter!

GreenSmithing · 01/07/2026 16:20

Kitchen bins. Heading for £200 some of them. Admittedly not a regular buy, but still.

The best olive oil is from Aldi.

A good quality front door will outlast you if it is well looked after. The £900 that the OP mentioned is actually cheap and is unlikely to be a good investment. We were quoted nearly £3000 for a replacement door…

Decided to restore the existing, still solid door. It took a fair bit of elbow grease but, once we added new door furniture, it was (nearly) as good as new. I think it’s the original door - thus well over a hundred years old!

In my mind they are still 21p, and second class are 19p!!

CalmWriter · 01/07/2026 16:26

HairsprayBabe · 01/07/2026 14:15

@CalmWriter I was estimating that in my head for our replacement but by the time I have added on new locks, hinges, post box etc etc it was over £900 I was shocked!

Try B&Q, our door was from them, hinges included, lock cutting tool and lock £35, the letter box we did upgrade to a better one as the original one didn’t have much draft proofing, the upgraded one was £17 on Amazon.

You could also try going direct to a builders yard if you have one near you, some of them will sell doors directly to the public, others don’t.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 01/07/2026 16:28

I need a new front door and to be honest I thought it would be way more expensive than that!

I bought a single stamp £1.80!!!

My first thought was dogs and their care.

Curtains

Windows

I’m a lifelong fan & owner of GSDs, but PIL wanted a Golden Retreiver… so I went looking at prices for them.
wow - wayyy more expensive than I thought!
Beautiful dogs tho♥️
