My name is very uncommon, but it is virtually identical in spelling to another slightly more common one. However, the pronunciation is different.

I am selling my house. It has been let out for over a decade with the same estate agents. They still call me the wrong name.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times you correct people and there really does come a point where there aren’t enough hours in the day.

Weirdly, it’s only in the area I grew up in this is an issue. Has anyone else had this?

I live abroad now and my surname never gets pronounced correctly as they follow the pronunciation rules of their language, which is fair enough but its an extremely well known English word, people that don't speak English at all would recognise it and know how to say it in all likelihood but they must stick to their rules no matter what sigh

Well I have a name many people pronounce incorrectly. And it is irritating so I get it OP, but I'm also one of those annoying people who find it really hard to get other peoples' names right, I just can't remember or say the name properly when reminded. So I'm on the fence on this one.

Do you pronounce it as Emily- ah or Em-ee-lee-ah? Ive heard both of those pronunciations for the same spelling.

Being a first generation mixed race, born in the 1960ies. Yes I know how it feels. my maths teacher called me the wrong name for 5 years. She was a dam good teacher though.
Today at 57years, I really don't care but that was not always the case.

I think it does matter! I know others disagree because there have been a lot of similar threads and people have said “meh, who cares if people call you by the wrong name”. I think it’s basic courtesy. Especially if you’ve spelled it out and politely corrected them, and they still persistently get it wrong. I’m sure if I was some VIP or someone they really admired, they’d make the effort!

Growing up, 99% percent of people who came across my name written down transposed the middle letters. It drove me INSANE. I changed my name when I was 16 as I was honestly afraid I’d end up screaming in the face of the next person to do it. It isn’t an especially popular name but it is better known these days so hopefully kids stuck with it now won’t be misnamed all the time.

Is your name something that's easily confused like Louis / Lewis? Or is it that your name spelling is actually wrong? There are a lot of parents who don't spell their child's name correctly...then they want their child's name pronounced differently to how it's spelt.
Eg child name on birth certificate is
Trayc; parent says it's pronounced Tracy 😂

Oh yes, had this all my life as well as spelling it the other name in an email where I have spelt my name! It’s so annoying and why I gave my kids easy names.

My name is pronounced completely different in different languages, which I find cool. When I was younger people would call me by a different name with the same number of syllables. I ended up answering to that name as well.

I have one of the most common names in England. And still people frequently call me a similar but different version of it. Baffles me.

More like Louis / Lewis. It isn’t spelled wrong for the name, if you see what I mean. So Sara isn’t spelled wrong if you’re called Sara.

When anyone has been give a name that is a bit obscure andor sounds completely different phonetically to the written form, it can be difficult for many people to acknowledge unless in regular contact. It does become easy when regularly addressing someone but when a first time encounter it's not.

Just got to be patient, reiterate the pronunciation.

Well, I’ve been patient for 45 years 😂 It is phonetic as it happens but people don’t ‘see’ the extra letter.

I'm annoyed for you. I find it rude and disrespectful when people don't pronounce another person's name correctly, after being the correct pronunciation numerous times. My daughter's name is Maya (pronounced May-a. As in Layer) and for years she's had people, including many teachers, call her My-a (Rhymes with Tyre) and tell her "that's how its pronounced in my language/country, blah, blah, blah. We don't care, it's her name and I chose to pronounce it May-a!!

It's me. I'm doing this. I cannot remember names. I cannot spell. I'm out there calling Martine 'Maxine' and Tamsin 'Tasmin'. People say their names and my memory files it under the most common name I hear that sounds like it. And as for spelling, who knows.

I think names are important and I really want to get it right. It's dreadful.

I stopped someone in their tracks. They persistently called me by another member of staffs name. I corrected a few times and when that didn't work I called him Dick instead of Richard. The problem went away. Good luck.

I often get called the wrong name. My name is easy to pronounce only spelt one way but i still get called another. I think it is because I’m short people use a childish nickname instead.

I lived in a Cosmopolitan city and people did try hard to pronounce names correctly. BUT humans use the path of least resistance and the easiest one for them!

The biggest shock is how we, in the UK (and US iny limited experience, of course) bastardise names and the poor person learns to introduce themself with their 'not-name' as it saves energy.

My name is foreign, long and unusual, some people can't remember it and many get it wrong, so much so I don't notice.

But I guess it depends where you live. Our kids school is very multicultural and they never strruggled. . I remember one them aged 5 saying "Guess what Katazyna's Dad's name is....it's "John" - That's an ACTUAL name" 😂
