I don’t think there is any way to stop people calling me a completely different name to mine

And I really wish it did not bother me, but it does.

My name is very uncommon, but it is virtually identical in spelling to another slightly more common one. However, the pronunciation is different.

I am selling my house. It has been let out for over a decade with the same estate agents. They still call me the wrong name.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times you correct people and there really does come a point where there aren’t enough hours in the day.

Weirdly, it’s only in the area I grew up in this is an issue. Has anyone else had this?

At work people shorten my very easy to pronounce and spell name even though I never have. I dislike it being shortened.
I’ve started to create my own versions of the names of those that do this for my own amusement. Eg Sally would become Salsa 🤣
If you’ve corrected it and they persist then it’s rude. I understand your frustration.

@CrawlingBackToYou it isn’t a made up name Confused

I think this is the rub: some people genuinely don’t have the brains to cope with names that aren’t Katie or Rebecca (not suggesting there’s anything wrong with those names of course.)

So what you’re saying is don’t have the temerity to be Welsh, Irish or Scottish, if you’re from further flung parts frankly fuck off and while you’re at it, don’t have anything you personally haven’t heard of.

JFC. You’d probably say that’s a silly made up name too, it’s quite common in Spain.

Some people have a very narrow sphere of reference and can't cope with deviation from their expectations.

I always want to mumble quietly on baby name threads, "ALL names are made up, you supercilious tossers", but that won't get me anywhere will it.

I sympathise OP - I have a perfectly normal name and I get all sorts of spellings and pronunciations, even though it's very rare to see it deliberately spelt or pronounced differently to mine. People are strange!

YouHaveAnArse · Yesterday 20:49

I have a name that people shorten - even though I introduce myself as eg. Susan, I get "Hi Sue", and then end up feeling like a dick saying "Actually it's Susan". And I'm now living in a part of the country where everyone does it - the GP, the person you get chatting to in the street, the person working at the post office or bank.

I actually find it quite rude when people who don't know me think they can do it straight away, especially as absolutely nobody in my friends/family calls me 'Sue' because... it's not my fucking name and never has been.

Started a new job recently and when the intro email from HR waiting for me on my first day said "Hello Sue" I died a little.

I get this.

I’m named after a famous Shakespeare character, my name is one letter different from a very famous boat and is pronounced EXACTLY as it’s written.

People still say it wrong.

If I’m in a bad mood I just ignore people when they get it wrong. If people phone me and ask if they’re speaking to +wrong name+ I say “no” and hang up. If I correct people and they STILL insist on the batshittery pronunciation I walk away/hang up.

If they can’t be arsed then neither can I.

I love your name! Although I wouldn’t be sure if it’s pronounced with a soft I like the character, or a hard I like the boat?

I would pronounce Titania Tit-arn-ia, am I one of the batshit people? I think my English teachers must have pronounced it like that at school

PotatoWafflesAndPeas · Yesterday 20:53

This is my life.

Very similar to two other names but sounds entirely different, people automatically refer to the other names, I could count on one hand people that can say my name straight away.

My name has recently become a pretty big company which is weird but I'm wondering as it gets more out there, people will be able to say it (wishful thinking) the brand pronounces it the correct way.

I missed out on never having personalised items as a child 🎻

BearSoFair · Yesterday 20:56

Is it Tamsin/Tasmin? I used to work with a Tamsin who spent half of her time answering to Tasmin.

I also know a Clare Sharp who gets her name written as 'Claire Sharpe' more often than not!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · Yesterday 20:56

Yes I have this problem. I go by a shortened version of my actual name eg Liz but get called an approximation of my name eg Liza all. The. Time. It’s because I work with a lot of people for whom English is not a first language and they can’t say the name I go by. It absolutely does me in. It’s like my identity has been changed without my consent. YANBU at all.

The blame lies fully with the person/people who named you.

As someone who has to call out silly made up names being endlessly corrected with “it’s blah blah”

Honestly couldn’t care less; you’ve made your child’s life unnecessarily hard. I’ll forget your child’s name and how it’s meant to be pronounced the minute you walk out the door. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Can you give some examples of first names that are NOT made up?

Ilovemyshed · Yesterday 20:58

I correct them. Every single time.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · Yesterday 20:59

Is it Sophie by any chance as I know one and a Sofia and I know someone who gets them mixed up

Velvian · Yesterday 20:59

It is really annoying. Like my name is (for example) Sarah and 1 colleague always says 'Hi Sara' when replying from the email from Sarah!

One of the worst I have come across was a colleague named Tiago, perfectly easy name, my office mate would always say 'Hi Diego' every time and every time I would correct her, but she wouldn't stop. Many others called him Tiego, like Diego, but with a T.

fatphalange · Yesterday 21:02

My name can be pronounced about 4 different ways. I don’t even know which is the correct one 😂 probably the way my parents say it, since they’re the ones WHO DID THIS, but I’ve never heard anyone else pronounce it the way they do so I answer to whichever variation I get.

No. The batshit people are the ones who run with Titainia, Tatiana, etc.

Like, just read the letters as they’re presented in front of you.

MrSchubertWhiskers · Yesterday 21:07

People mispronounce both my first and last names. It's very annoying. I do correct them, every time.

I also make an effort to always pronounce other people's names correctly, and if they're unfamiliar, I ask.

LaughingCat · Yesterday 21:07

Literally never had my name pronounced correctly by an English person. I’m English, my name is Danish in origin but it’s not hugely uncommon. I’ve been called everything under the sun that is a female name with the same first letter, and even if they do get my name, it’s pronounced completely incorrectly. Even when I say it to them correctly first.

It used to drive my mum absolutely bananas…so I may have never minded all that much 😂. I started mispronouncing it myself after a while and now I’m stuck.

MrSchubertWhiskers · Yesterday 21:08

YES!!!

When it's in print in front of them and you spell it put clearly and then they still get it wrong Angry

The original ones that grow on the naming bushes. You pick them when they are nice and ripe. They smell earthy with a tang of citrus.

All. The . Time. It’s really annoying. I say my name, they parrot it back incorrectly, which amazes me. It’s double barrelled, but really easy to pronounce because it contains known English names. Weird.

Same. One of my friends pronounces my name as if it were French. As above, it’s double barrelled, two very plain traditional names but no, I’m somehow French. She pronounces and spells it as if French. Very odd.

FieldsOfFields · Yesterday 21:14

My friend has a name that is pronounced differently depending if you are from the North or the South, think how it is for the pronunciation of bath or garage and the different ways to say those.

I can see why she gets really pissy about it because her name is pronounced one way but when it is read by a Southerner they will say it their way. Luckily when she corrects them they do say it the Northern way even if it sounds weird in their accent.

I think it is important to learn how to pronounce names the correct way, I mean if I can learn how to say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious aged 7 (thank you Mary Poppins) then surely most people can manage a name. I have written down phonetic spellings of names before so I get them right.

Hadalifeonce · Yesterday 21:22

Some people used to shorten my name, I would tell them I never shorten my name and I don't like it. If they continued, I would refuse to answer; it's just downright rude.

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 21:29

Oh yes, the Vicky, Shazza, Jo, Kaz crowd.

Unless someone tells you that's what they wish to be called, don't call them the short versions.

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · Yesterday 21:33

My name has a few spellings and a handful of names it could be short for. People spell it wrong and also use various of the full length names which are not my name! My maiden name was also unusual so mostly pronounced wrong or even changed for one that sounds vaguely like it.

I pretty much answer to anything now!

bestcatlife · Yesterday 21:34

All the time, never used to bother me much but really annoys me now, makes me angry sometimes because it’s literally just a case of reading my name correctly instead of assuming the correct spelling is a typo. Think I’ve just had enough and want to finally be called by my actual name.

bestcatlife · Yesterday 21:37

We might have the same name @PotatoWafflesAndPeas 😅
