Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:19

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

A holiday for me (uk cottage break type) means watching copious amounts on Netflix after long walks; playing my Nintendo Switch, reading my Kindle, playing podcasts and music. No Internet would be a deal breaker for me too and I’m shocked by the people who think it isn’t a big deal.

I use the Internet a lot but there are other things to do!

Why do you need it to read your Kindle, by the way?

Cath082 · 28/06/2026 09:46

I would say it depends. Do you need the internet for work, essential keeping in touch? If so then maybe you were right to cancel.
if it was for social media, general day to day then I don’t understand why you cancelled.

EmmaB1309 · 28/06/2026 09:54

It’s interesting how people jump straight to ‘who cares if you can’t spend your holiday doomscrolling’. The internet has a lot of uses beyond that. You might want to use google maps or check the weather. Check information on local attractions such as prices and opening times. You might want to buy entry tickets online. And in the evenings some people like to stream movies or do whatever it is they usually do at home on the internet.
But what exactly is meant by ‘no internet’? Do they just mean no WiFi in the accommodation? Because in that case it would depend on what kind of mobile data allowance you have. If it means the mast is down and there’s no internet in the entire area, including mobile data, that might be more problematic.
Im still not sure it’s worthy of a full refund.

bananasplitsallround · 28/06/2026 09:58

I would want to check that you would have phone signal for emergencies as most landlines now use the broadband and will not work without internet.

RocketLollyPolly · 27/06/2026 14:24

I wouldn’t stay anywhere without internet. I know we all did 25 years ago but we previously lived without heating or water and it doesn’t mean we would now.

Comparing WiFi with heating and water is hilarious! It’s sad that you think you can’t survive without it.

If OP had booked a place and the oven was on the blink, would posters say “ah, it’s summer, just eat salad, lovely lettuce available in Scotland” or “when I go wild camping, I just boil up some rice on a campfire”?

Edited

Exactly. Such bizarre responses from some people.

Can I take your place? Going somewhere that’s cut off from the digital world honestly would be heaven to me right now.

Abricot1983 · 28/06/2026 10:05

Look at your contract. It will likely say that WiFi is not guaranteed. Therefore you are lucky they agreed to change the dates

SparklesWithSynergy · 28/06/2026 10:09

KeptWomanSummer · 27/06/2026 14:21

Why does no internet mean you can’t go on the holiday?!

Because a lot of us do a lot of stuff with the Internet

Film on in the evening
Keeping an eye of spending
Checking information
Checking traffic
Seeing what attractions are around
Keeping an eye on home if you have ring or blink or other cameras
Relatives keeping in touch
Emergency information

And more

Just because some of us like to stay connected doesn't make us evil, or stupid, or lacking in any way.

(Edit, missed a word)

Im speechless - why does it matter if you haven’t got access to the internet in your hotel for a week? Surely you’re going for a holiday not to spend your time online? I assume you could be contacted by phone on the event of a real emergency?

If there is no Internet, then is there even a phone signal?

Bikenutz · 28/06/2026 10:12

Offering a date change is fair. It isn’t your accommodation provider’s fault that the internet isn’t working. Can you ask them what the 4/5g signal is like there? Could you phone out in an emergency?

What do you need internet for?

If it’s to watch movies, is there a DVD player in the accommodation? There are tons of DVDs for 50p each in my nearest charity shop.

If you read online, or listen to internet radio, can you download material in advance?

If it’s needed for work, or for monitoring your aged relative remotely, or for streaming your favorite series that cannot be deferred until home, there may be no work around and changing the date is the best you can hope for.

SparklesWithSynergy · 28/06/2026 10:13

Miranda65 · 27/06/2026 15:02

This! And if you know where you're going, I think most of us would research stuff this in advance, surely? Plus, if you absolutely have to check something, just use data for 5 minutes. It is perfectly possible to manage without the Internet.

So how do you research current traffic delays in advance?

ExplodingSmittens · 28/06/2026 10:14

I’g going away next week and the internet will be a train stop away.

We’ll do radical things like play cards, BBQ, go for walks and talk to one another in the evenings.

pinkyshirtya · 28/06/2026 10:15

Bonkers that you cancelled.

Prioritising internet over time spent together on a family holiday is so weird

How do you think we did these things pre internet? You have to be more organised in advance but it is perfectly possible. What you’re saying is that you don’t want to change your behaviour, which is fair enough if you’re paying for a service.

Miyagi99 · 28/06/2026 10:17

Canonlythinkofthisone · 27/06/2026 14:55

How do you all figure out where you're going? Like, when we go on holiday and then think of things to do or pick up brochures for days out, or looking for somewhere to eat...how do you plan your days without access to websites/reviews/train times/maps etcetc
Baffled.

Same way I did before the internet.

SparklesWithSynergy · 28/06/2026 10:13

You don’t, you use 4/5g on your phone and or have the radio on in the car.

If there is no internet or data connection at all, then understand this if it was advertised to have internet.

If it's a case of no internet but did not check online to see if there's mobile 4g/5g connection you're crazy even cancelling. All mobile operators allow you to upgrade to 100GB+ for just one month generally for under £20 each.

We did do these things pre Internet, but we also use to hand wash all our clothes. Don't fancy doing that either.

And for the smug "oh it would be be bliss with no Internet " here, that sounds like a you problem not being able to switch the Internet off.

vickylou78 · 28/06/2026 10:21

I find this so odd that you can't go on holiday without internet!!! Just go and enjoy yourself! Unless you were literally planning to work online or something what do you need internet for on holiday?

Surely if there was an emergency someone would just call you?

herbalteabag · 28/06/2026 10:22

I could manage without the wi fi but it would be a lot harder without a phone signal. I don't need to scroll or watch Netflix (rarely do that on holiday) but I wouldn't feel as relaxed if I couldn't check in with the person looking after my cats. I also do usually look things up about the area whilst there. Whilst I could plan ahead more, it's not as convenient.

SparklesWithSynergy · 28/06/2026 10:23

Bikenutz · 28/06/2026 10:19

You don’t, you use 4/5g on your phone and or have the radio on in the car.

I don't use the radio in the car, I use Spotify

And if I am in the car already it's because I have a plan to go somewhere specific. I don't want to sit in the car working out where I'm going because my original plan has to change due to traffic or train cancellations

ExplodingSmittens · 28/06/2026 10:24

Sorry OP I posted before reading your updates. If you need to be contactable I understand internet not being a problem but no phone signal at all can be problematic in some circumstances.

I have still done it though but it does need some careful planning.

No, there were definitely washing machines pre internet, I remember them well.
It's entirely possible to have a good holiday without the internet, but she doesn't want to, so that's her choice.
