Strawberries - add sugar or not?

Silverbirchleaf · 26/06/2026 22:57

Growing up, my dm would always add sugar to strawberries to sweeten them. I realise that I no longer do that, as varieties sold now are alot sweeter. I wasn’t actually That fond of strawberries in the past, but quite like them now.

Does anyone routinely add sugar nowadays?

Nope, but I was brought up like you, parents always added sugar.

I like them with Greek yogurt, 😋

Denim4ever · 26/06/2026 23:01

I think of it as a thing my parents generation did. Likewise sugar in tea and thinking sauces with tomatoes in them needed half a teaspoon of sugar.

My mum always did back in the 70s. She said it brought out the juice nicely. She did like to slosh a little Cointreau on too! 😋

My mother added sugar, but I don't. It's not necessary.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 26/06/2026 23:55

I grew up with them always having sugar and I add sugar now. But I purposefully haven’t ever put sugar on them for my dc so they’re used to having them without 🙈😁

Sugar and fresh lemon juice. You will thank me

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 27/06/2026 00:00

My mum does, she likes the syrup it creates. Only when having them as a dessert with ice cream.

Otherwise we just eat them as they come.

Darkspiderplant · 27/06/2026 00:04

My DP cannot eat strawberries without sugar. I’ve never put sugar on strawberries. DC will eat them straight out of the punnet. My DP look on aghast.

OfDragonsDeep · 27/06/2026 00:06

Always had a little bowl of sugar to dip them in at my grandparents. My mum didn’t like it and we were t allowed it at home 😂

yonem · 27/06/2026 00:07

No sugar for me. I also don’t add sugar to cereal (other than a bit of maple syrup on porridge) which my grandparents used to do.

GeneralWaste · 27/06/2026 00:15

Squeeze a lemon, heat the juice in the microwave and dissolve some sugar in it. Mix the strawberries with the juice. Leave for a bit and it turns into a delicious syrup.

I think sugared strawberries have their place. I love fresh strawberries as they are and usually eat them like that. Strawberries that have been sprinkled with sugar and left to sit for a while are a juicy treat that invoke lovely childhood memories. They taste like summer holidays at my grandma's

PurpleLovecats · 27/06/2026 00:16

My parents add sugar. We don’t in our family.

ExOptimist · 27/06/2026 00:19

Like a lot of fruit and veg modern varieties of strawberry are bred for sweetness so sugar is needed. Apples are sweeter than they used to be, as are carrots.

OrangeCrushes · 27/06/2026 00:32

Invariably I end up with strawberries that look a bit peaked and I must add sugar, which creates a lovely syrup overnight. My daughter loves this more than any other form of strawberries.

Of course meant to say sugar is not needed.

MyGirlJ · 27/06/2026 00:36

I only add sugar if I'm making Eton mess, because it makes them a bit syrupy. I chop the strawberries, add some sugar, and let them sit in the fridge for an hour. Otherwise, I just eat them as they come

FWC2026 · 27/06/2026 00:39

No I don't.

BUT my Great Aunt (96) still does & I love them.

but my BG doesn't, so it's a very rare treat I reserve for when I'm at her house 💕

Sweet enough!

knitnerd90 · 27/06/2026 01:00

I taste one first and see if they need sweetening.

but also sometimes I want the syrup so I sprinkle with sugar (taste first so I know how much) and a squeeze of lemon juice and let them sit for a few minutes. I learnt to make shortcake after moving to the USA and it’s better when the juice soaks into the cake or biscuit.

TheNinjaWife · 27/06/2026 02:19

Black pepper…sublime

Annie202 · 27/06/2026 02:47

I just add a twist of ground black pepper.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 27/06/2026 06:14

I'd completely forgotten about sugar on strawberries, my mum and my grandmother used to do this. I'll have to ask my mum if she still does.

PersephoneParlormaid · 27/06/2026 06:17

If they are out of season and white in the middle I add sugar, if they are in season and red in the middle I don’t.

Linencat · 27/06/2026 06:19

Absolutely not!
Why would you ruin beautiful strawberries with sugar
I dont think I have any sugar unless Im baking anyway
