Strawberries - add sugar or not?

Silverbirchleaf · 26/06/2026 22:57

Growing up, my dm would always add sugar to strawberries to sweeten them. I realise that I no longer do that, as varieties sold now are alot sweeter. I wasn’t actually That fond of strawberries in the past, but quite like them now.

Does anyone routinely add sugar nowadays?

I just made some strawberry ice cream and you add sugar and lemon to bring out the juice. But I wouldn’t do that if I was eating them straight if you know what I mean

Mydahliasareshit · 27/06/2026 14:56

Once they're washed and prepped, try a tiny sprinkle of Malibu over the top 😍

2dogsandabudgie · 27/06/2026 14:58

I think sugar helps to preserve them so they last longer. We always had sugar on them as children.

I don't add sugar now but I find supermarket strawberries go off very quickly.

I made a friend at university who was several social classes above me, and not only did her family deny me a cup of tea with my meal ('surely you would rather have that after' they gasped) but they also put black pepper on their strawberries!! I knew then that I was not destined for the high-life.

Tiddlywinks63 · 27/06/2026 15:17

Nope, a twist of black pepper and a drizzle of maple syrup.

caringcarer · 27/06/2026 15:20

My Mil does..

You don’t use sugar in a tomato sauce to correct the flavour? I’m 42 and do that!
on strawberries it depends how I feel. Might have sugar and cream, might have lemon curd and Greek yoghurt

Nope, never use sugar in sauces with tomatoes

People often say this. It certainly wasn't true in our house. I am in my mid 60s and growing up we had lots and lots of jam, biscuits, cakes, sweets and puddings. We didn't have sugar in tea or coffee but that was because none of us liked it. I didn't like sugar on cereal either so didn't have that. The end result of all of that was that I grew up without much of a sweet tooth. The thing I craved was fruit because that was rationed. I assume it was much more expensive than biscuits etc. I often used my pocket money to buy myself a big orange I could eat all to myself. My Mum would cut an orange into quarters or an apple in half and share it out that way.

I'm 71 and agree there was more sugar around when I was a child - on cereal, in tea, on fruit plus biscuits etc. I deliberately cut back in my teens

This was a habit of a generation for whom added calories / energy was a good and necessary thing. We are no longer of those generations.

Edited

16 calories in a teaspoonful of sugar. As I mentioned above I add less than a teaspoonful to a punnet of strawberries. It's not like the calories in some of the huge syrupy sweet milky coffees people have every day, often with a muffin.

I only use a small amount but it makes a big difference to taste

It makes it taste less savoury and brings out the sweetness of the tomatoes. That's what I don't like

Some 35 years ago, travelling around New Zealand, I was introduced to the concept of eating strawberries with black pepper. It sounds as though that combination shouldn't work but it's divine.

My New Zealander friends were astonished to learn that in the UK we ate strawberries with sugar. Equally, they regarded a cheese-and-tomato sandwich as an exotic combination, and were greatly amused that I considered their bog-standard cheese-and-pineapple sandwiches to be so extraordinary.

zingally · 28/06/2026 12:48

My mum in her early 70s does, and always has done. I've never done it. Strawberries are sweet enough IMO.

TheIdlerReturns · 28/06/2026 12:49

Absolutely not

Quooth · 28/06/2026 12:56

Not now but I grew up with family who did this.
I am in my 60s. As children we had a lot of sugar. Not necessarily in snacks but we had home baked cakes, pies, puddings and everything was covered in sugar. No wonder my teeth were so bad.
I put this down to my parents growing up with rationing.
My in laws were older than my parents and MIL, who was lovely, would bake a fruit pie with sweetened fruit and a coating of sugar on top, then she would sprinkle extra sugar on top as she served it.

SombodyThatYouUsedToKnow · 28/06/2026 13:05

My grandmother sprinkled them with icing sugar. It was delicious but too sweet for me now, I just have them on their own.

DinoLil · 28/06/2026 13:43

Absolutely not!!!

My DM always put sugar on strawberries and they were inedible. A bit of balsamic vinegar is quite nice.

A group of went for afternoon at a friend's once and she served up strawberries and tipped almost half a bag of sugar over them. I had to say I couldn't possibly eat anything more!

mumumental · 28/06/2026 13:58

No way.

tartyflette · 28/06/2026 14:04

Depends on the strawberries. English grown ones in late June onwards, probably not but earlier ones might need some help.
I find Spanish strawberries in April or May to be very disappointing in general, they can be sweet but too hard and lacking that special strawberry fragrance, and hence flavour.

CoastalCalm · 28/06/2026 14:31

Sometimes I’ll sprinkle a little sugar to
macerate them if I want to put over icecream - probably half a teaspoon onto the cut fruit so not a huge deal

AnyDayNowChuckJacksonNSoul · 28/06/2026 14:37

70s kid Strawberries were a rare treat.
Van came round they were sold in cardboard punnets.
The straberry Mannie only came roon in the summer.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 28/06/2026 14:51
